2009 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT SuperTuscan Blend

Gave it three hours in the decanter at the - highly appreciated - advise of earlier tasters. Dark cherry aromas in the nose, yet slow to release. Similar in the mouth, some graphite coming along. Good length, but still fairly tight. This vintage should carry on another decade.

Already quite far in decline. Still OK to drink yet age clearly shows. Possibly this bottle was not properly stored in its early years.

I was taken aback by a fairly pungent jammy smell when opening the bottle that makes one fear to see next a ruby colored wine well beyond its prime. It did improve in the next hour or so and the bottle ended up being drunk. My tasting companion would agree with your assessment, even if he also considered there to be some end-of-life characteristics.
I had similar impressions with a previous bottle a year or so ago. Perhaps the bottles suffered from less-than-optimal storage when I bought them many years ago.

Took its time to open up: two hours of air do make sense. Good wine but a bit stern. I did expect somewhat more.

12/11/20, 11:38 AM - Highly grateful for Michael Zoppo’s comment on taking time.

I’ve only just begun touching the 2009’s (its high on the ready-to-drink list, which guides my priorities) but there the cellar pipeline is full.

A few bottles of 04 and 06 are still there and will be kept for some serious benchmarking with friends. If you can spare a few years, continue watching this space.

I'm hoping that this wine gets better with age. Not very complex. funk at the start. Minimal fruit. Off bottle?
