Finally opened the 2012 Enderle & Moll 'M' (Muschelkalk meaning limestone) Pinot Noir. Compared to the other single site wine 'B' which was very floral with spice and animal notes reminiscent of a Morey Grand Cru, the 'M' was much more densely structured with pure Pinot fruit, great freshness and cut. Sumptuous like a Richebourg, the 'M' is a very different expression of Pinot. It's hard to say which I think will last longer, the haunting perfume of 'B' or the purity and cut of 'M'. I think the best solution is to open a bottle of both every year and see how they develop.

The colour is a lovely pale cherry red leading to a pale orange/garnet rim. This was already exciting as it suggested that the wine was not over-extracted.

The nose is utterly beguiling with violet, red fruits, some sappy notes reminiscent of whole-bunch pressed Burg, all framed in subtle sandalwood and nutmeg. So far, served blind, this is top Burgundy...

The palate begins with a sustained attack of red fruits, floral notes, sap, orange blossom water, then fine silky tannins and a lovely line of acid drives the long finish with notes of sandalwood and nutmeg. It quite left me speechless.

The alcohol is 13%, it's not over-oaked, it has great acid/alcohol/tannin balance and has a lovely pale colour. Sometimes German Spätburgunder can be a touch heavy-handed but this wine really finally convinced me that this level of greatness can be achieved outside of Burgundy. Blind I would have said it was a top Morey St. Denis Grand Cru, perhaps Ponsot but it costs a fraction of a Ponsot Grand Cru!

Sadly these wines are made in minute quantities (around 600 bottles per wine) and hopefully they remain under the radar so I can buy a handful of bottles every year. I will be certainly fighting for as much as possible!

Mineral nose with fruit nestled into a firm slatey pillow! Fruit profile is yellow stone fruits, plus some floral notes. The palate is simply explosive, with saturated yellow fruits, slate and river pebbles. Finishes long and mouth watering. This is every bit as profound as a TOP white Burgundy but a fraction of the price... Ready to go but will hold for many years.

Piercingly pure and fresh citrus, stone fruits and flowers. Amazing density of flavour - really palate staining. Such detail in the mouth with a palpable sense of stony minerals. Immensely pleasurable now but still plenty of life...

Last time I tasted this some months ago it was a bit surly with quite firm tannins impeding the sense of juiciness - not now! Beautiful nose with violet scented Pinot fruit with a Nuits roar and a healthy dose of sauvage! Delicious palate with tannins still present though now adding line and length to what is essentially very juicy mature, sweet-fruited, sexy Nuits! I love the roar of Nuits fruit!

This is really lovely for the price and fully ready to go. Classic nose of red Pinot fruit, earth, tea and some floral notes. Palate is still juicy with red fruits, a line of fine tannins that are fully integrated, earth/tea notes drive the finish which is quite persistent for this level. Shows a touch of rusticity, mostly on the mid and back palate but is a great drink for the price and can be drunk mid-week guilt free!

Exceptional value for money though does show a touch of rusticity on the finish though certainly doesn't lack character and is indeed aromatically very appealing.

Restrained and cool green and yellow orchard fruits with a backdrop of subtle stoniness and saltiness. Palate is tight and fresh and only really just starting to open up. Taut green fruits, vibrant acidity driving a long mineral finish. Just a hint of yellow fruit and some creaminess to suggest it has started to open. First bottle opened and I think I'd better wait 2-3 years before I even think about taking another look. Will be great...

Breathtakingly good Champagne which balances great freshness with incredible richness. The nose offers citrus, brioche, roasted hazelnut, white flowers and minerals. The palate is deep and broad (suggesting this is a food Champagne) though has incredible clarity, detail and freshness. Very long. Perfect now but no hurry as this will last for some years to come. Just decide whether you want the freshness now or more depth and nuttiness later.... Superb!

Opened a little bit reticently displaying a nose of mostly black fruits with really firm tannins. After an hour the aromas surged forward with cool black and blue Pinot fruits, floral notes and a roar of Nuits earth. Incredibly detailed. This is seriously classy juice and when the tannins resolve further the score will definitely increase.

Searingly intense and mouth watering. Just hitting it's stride now. Lacks the detail and nuance of truly magnificent but what it lacks in nuance it makes up for with power and length. Lovely white peach notes with floral, mineral depth. Peacock tail finish.

Lovely 1er Cru Beaune with lifted cherry, strawberry, sap, spices and some forest notes developing. Only just starting to come out to play! Tannins are ripe and velvety, with a fresh line of acidity driving the long finish. If you have a case try one, if you have 1 bottle wait!

Classic nose of menthol, red fruits, fig, prune, liquorice and floral notes. Palate is finely wrought with fine powdery tannins, deep set fig, prune, red fruits and liquorice. Fresh long and absolutely not modern, though clean precise and elegant. Classic Giacosa!

Now entering a deeply honey and nut phase. Delicious, with still some oxidative character from the difficult in-between phase but in 2-3 years this will be glorious. Wait, unless you like a touch of dry sherry character.

Classic Medoc nose of perfumed red apple skin, cassis, sandalwood and cigar box. A touch of ladies handbag. Delicious palate with juicy perfumed Cabernet fruit with that St-Julien femininity. Fine talc like tannins. Really delicious, especially considering what I paid for this wine...

Tightly wound and clearly not quite ready, though beautiful with greengage, white flowers and minerals. Honey will come later...
Palate is tense and electric, with amazing line and length. Typical Combettes with a touch of Meursault character. Give it 3-5 years and it will surely deserve an even higher rating.

After decanting was dominated by earthy notes (would recommend at least 2 hours decanting before drinking) but gradually the classic scorched earth, cassis, floral, mineral notes of Haut Brion began wafting up like lazy smoke. The palate is extremely multi-dimensional with silky fine tannins and an endless finish. A very great wine that is just hitting its stride but in no way is starting to fade. If you have this in your cellar please don't hurry, it's surely going to get even better!

Classic St Joseph minerally red and black fruits with olive tapenade and roasted meats - no oak evident - Hurray! Palate is long, fresh with great depth and detail. Tannins are fine grained and acid lifts the finish. Approachable but will be much better in a couple of years.

Nice Merlot fruit swamped by too much new oak. It's 7 years old and the nose is dominated by sweet vanilla, The palate has strong drying oak tannins which is a shame because the fruit underneath seems to be high quality. Parkerised.

Still very tight but i couldn't resist trying at least 1 bottle young from the case. Intense lime, lime blossom, orange peel, white peach and floral/mineral notes explode in the nose. Palate is concentrated, mouth watering, and linear, perfectly mirroring the aromas from the nose, with racy mineral acidity driving the palate to a very long finish. Superb. This wine will definitely warrant higher marks in a couple of years.

Technically perfect yet rather soulless wine. Typical new world, rather worked style showing a lot of winemaker input, though not over-oaked thankfully. The fruit does show cool climate credentials, but the soul seems to have been blended away by multi-regional blending. A strong case for the validity and importance of site specific wines. Despite my gripes this is NOT a bad Chardonnay, in face most would say it's very good - probably warranting a higher score than my rather mean 83, but after cutting my teeth on Chardonnay with a sense of place (Burgundy...) I just find the experience of drinking this rather hollow and devoid of joy of emotion, which is what I ultimately look for in 'great' wines. How James Halliday gave this 97 points I simply don't understand...

Showing some rather bretty character and beginning to seem a little attenuated, it's nonetheless pleasant enough, though clearly about to decline. Cassis, redcurrant, fig, cedar, tobacco, and strong notes of horse stable. Without brett this would be a much better wine.

Underestimated this wine as I tasted it first going through it's weird stage. It still needs a few years before it really comes out to play. If you have this wine don't open it before it's 10th birthday. White fruits, flowers, nuts, honey, minerals, crushed rocks, and much more to come.

Really very good and honest showing typicity and inner strength, if a little rustic. Tannins still firm but aromatic complexity really coming along nicely. I'm glad I caught it at this stage before the fruit fades as it lacks the breeding to go the distance. Drink now with some meat and it will bring some good honest pleasure.
