Red
Dark ruby touched with garnet. Brash nose – stalky and meaty with dark cherry fruit, oak spice and obvious alcohol. Fine, but a bit aggressive – perhaps too young still? Mouth entry is full and spicy with sweet black fruit. Very dry and savoury on the mid-palate but with an alcoholic kick to it. The finish is firm and again a touch hot. **
Red
Pale blood/ruby. Broad amber rim. Looks darker as it is carrying a lot of sediment. Sweet and soft on the nose : kirsch and spice. Quite big mouth entry - seems more like Rhone to me from the size of it. Quite short on the finish. Robust but somehow uninteresting. *
Red
Nice bright deep ruby, broad paler rim and distinct browning. Lovely perfume on the nose : floral, spicy and brambly. Mouth is very full, rich and smooth - almost liquid fruitcake. Superb fruit and structure, and a nice tangy finish. Top stuff. *****

1983 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
An amber, olive colour almost throughout, but showing garnet at the core. Fat nose - touches of bacon and mushroom. No fruit left really, and a bit of volatile acidity showing. Very animale but still attractive. Rather offputtingly volatile on the mouth entry, and not a lot of fruit density. Mid-palate is rather austere. Finish is tight and grippy still. Doesn't charm. Perhaps there are better bottles out there.
Red
1985 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium garnet, caramel colour on the rim. Rich nose - full of farmyard, touched with bramble fruit and fresh woodland cepes. Mouth entry is soft but nicely pointed with acidity. Lovely richness of plum conserve and gamey duck. Lingers beautifully on the finish. This doesn't show striking density or complexity but is just perfect. Runs the 89 close for wine of the night.
Red
1988 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Quite deep garnet, just a nice bricking to it. Nose is robust, plummy and smoky. A touch of loganberry. Mouth entry is medium bodied, firm and slightly rustic. Medium weight in the mouth and rather pruney. Finish is firm and gamey. Not a delight in the context of the other vintages, but a solid wine.
Red
1989 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium garnet, touched by blood. Quite broad paler rim, just a touch of bricking. Lovely ethereal perfumed, nose - floral touches and rich, fecund earthiness. Caramelised ripe fruit. Mouth entry is full and creamy and yet has freshness too. Mid-palate is luscious with dark red fruit and great acidity. Fabulous fresh long finish. Really quite voluptuous. Super wine and my wine of the night.
Red
1991 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium blood/garnet. Quite broad, slightly browning rim. Nice woodland nose with a touch of spice and soft red fruit beneath. Smooth and silky on the mouth entry with nice spiciness and even a bit of woodiness. Mid-palate shows quite rich, chocolatey, texture and dark, woody fruit. Very complete and nicely mature, but not a great wine.
Red
1993 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Very deep blood red, with a touch of ruby to it. Not much paler rim and barely a touch of orange. Robust, spicy nose. Seems quite velvety, dark and earthy. Mouth entry is quite big and brash, with high acidity. Mid-palate doesn't go anywhere - there are fresh dark fruits and a sense of warmth, but no more. Quite big and ample. Nice long finish with rich fruit and acidity - lipsmacking stuff. Very nice, but very primary still. Try again in 5 years.
Red
1994 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Nice medium blood/garnet. Quite broad paler rim showing quite some bricking. Light, fragrant, gamey nose - quite sweet red fruit there too. Mouth entry almost tart with very crisp red fruit and a rustic earthy edge. Mid-palate shows little development : quite soft and gentle, and just a bit tannic around the edges.
Red
1995 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Really very deep blood/garnet. Not much paler rim. Ripe dark cherry on the nose, with a nice light touch of game. Quite charming in the context of the wines so far, but not especially complex. Mouth entry is quite firm but well fruited - and really very tannic immediately behind. Mid-palate shows really good fruit density, but a big tannic grip around it. Seems well balanced and very young still. Should keep well.
Red
1997 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium blood/garnet, quite some bricking on the broad paler rim. Nose is ripe, broad and farmyardy. Very nice, but rather fat, and a little coarse in a sexy way. Mouth entry is quite full and grippy with firm plummy fruit. Mid-palate rather brash. But good depth of fruit. Lingers on the finish, but doesn't charm.
Red
2001 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium/pale blood red, quite broad paler rim. Just showing a touch of age. Interesting candied, gamey nose. Not quite clean, but not unappealing. Mouth entry firm, ripe and soft. Plummy and earthy again. Mid-palate shows only moderate density, with a real earthy, tannic edge. Finish is nice and long and stretched out with acidity.
Red
2002 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium blood red, broad paler rim. No age showing yet. Nose quite reticent, but showing a lovely earthy, smokey, animal character I noted as "burrowy". Mouth entry is firm and tight - there is a sense of coiled up energy here. Great release on the mid-palate. Quite sturdy plummy fruit and minerality. A real edge to it, especially on the finish. Quite austere but very pleasing. Deep and fruity on the finish with a rich earthy tone. A lovely Mazis, but needs 10 more years for me....
Red
Rich fat and sweet. I came to this late in the tasting and perhaps was "over"-wowed, but marked it wine of the day – this truly transcends the vintage ! *****
Red
Medium ruby touched with garnet, fairly broad paler rim. A little reserved on the nose, but with a rich plummy character. Well balanced in the mouth with red fruits and a distinctly savoury edge. Good character but not generous. ***
Red
Medium ruby, touched with garnet throughout and with a broad, gently fading, rim. Lovely soft redcurrant nose, very floral. Fresh vibrant and firmly structured. Quite dry and earthy. Nice length. **
Red
1997 Dominique Laurent Grands-Echezeaux Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Garnet tinged ruby, broad paler rim. Broad and earthy, and rather rustic on the nose, which seems afflicted by a bit of reduction to start with. Medium bodied, but rather simple. Surprisingly (to me at least) no obvious oak, and a good reflection of terroir and the year. In the end rather 1-dimensional, but nice and ready. **
Red
Deep blood/ruby, barely any paler rim. Mellow slightly smoky nose, shows a deep damsony fruit along with quite a bit of oak and a slightly disturbing edge reminiscent of swimming pool. Firm and fruity in the mouth and really quite sharp edged. Complete but not harmonious. Top ***
Red
1972 Chanson Père & Fils Musigny Musigny Grand Cru Pinot Noir
Beautiful, crystalline purity – bright ruby at the core, touched with garnet throughout. Amazingly bright, almost youthful appearance. Sweet and supple on the nose, still with a lovely floral and spicy edge. Perhaps just a touch volatile. Clean and pleasing, sweet red fruit on the mouth entry, but a little hollow on the mid-palate. Tannins are bitter but not prominent. This is the skeleton of a lovely wine, but lacks the flesh for proper earthly pleasure. 3-
Red
Tasted blind. Quite pale but bright crimson red; medium tapering rim. Simple raspberry/cherry fruit but with a slightly green edge. Smooth and velvety on the palate but lacks a little density with some dry earthiness coming through. A bit austere on the finish. 3-

Red
Tasted blind. Colour showing a little age. Quite voluptuous but elegantly perfumed. A touch animale too. Very pure and elegant on the palate; subtle red fruit and earthiness. Lovely finish. Super. 4
Red
Tasted blind. Bright cherry red; broad paler rim. Light, delicate 'proper Burgundy' nose. Pure and quite sweet palate; medium weight but well-balanced. Quite voluptuous in style and lively. Decent length but simple finish. 3+

On opening at 12C - rich, intense and with a real sense of brooding power; closed but 'tingling'. Nose is richly meaty and earthy with some licorice, but a hint of glory to come in the upper registers. Square in shape, but very fine in texture. Real class and scale. A little warmer, and ripe red fruits start to emerge to fill out the canvas. Hold at least another 5 years.
White
Carillon Perrieres vertical with Jacques Carillon (London): Quite deep mid-gold. Reductive, rather rubbery edge. Underneath is a soft, generous, perfectly shapely wine. Again ripe pears and a mineral undertow. Really lovely mature fruit, very elegant and a medium length finish that shows a touch of caramel. Drink up 4
White
Carillon Perrieres vertical with Jacques Carillon (London): Medium straw-gold. A little reductive at first, but then lovely ripe pear fruit and still with a line of fraicheur. Plump and lovely in the mouth - a really complete palate. Shows hints of caramel and a really intense mineral undertow on the long finish. Lovely, but again I would drink up. 4
White
Carillon Perrieres vertical with Jacques Carillon (London): Pale greenish straw. Cheesy nose of bound sulphur takes a long time to clear. Beneath is a loveley succulent old apple smell (borderline bruised ... so watch out !). Properly developed - the mouth entry has lovely poise, good balance and an undertow of minerality. Big, long finish. Full ready, but with air shows a touch of oxidiation and alcohol. Drink up. 4-
White
Carillon Perrieres vertical with Jacques Carillon (London): Pale straw. Broad nose - lovely developed appley Puligny. Round and succulent in the mouth; lacks the acidity of the younger vintages, but good minerality underneath the fat. Big on the finish - very expansive baking spice and minerality. Not elegant but surprisingly good. 3+

Carillon Perrieres vertical with Jacques Carillon (London): Pale straw. Plump, melony nose, quite a bit of apple pie spice too. Green apple fruit, but good body to carry it and those baking spices carrying through on the palate. Open and attractive with a long finish that maintains some sharpness. Drinking well if you like 'em rich. 4-
White
Carillon Perrieres vertical with Jacques Carillon (London): Pale straw. Elegant nose, a touch of elderflower and a green limey edge. Very clean and linear mouth entry; broadens on the mid-palate, but this is lithe and beautiful. Great matiere and a precise, elegant finish. 4+
White
Carillon Perrieres vertical with Jacques Carillon (London): Pale straw. Ripe and rich but still elegant, with a touch of spearmint. Rather fatter than the 2010. Very charming mouth entry, but becomes a little blowsy on the mid-palate and the alcohol is noticeable. Quite big and a touch caramelly on the finish. Good for the vinatge, but not to the standard expected of the appelation/price. 3-

Red
Drunk amidst a vertical of Chevillon's Vaucrains, this was deep, dark and smooth on the nose. Slightly chocolatey, with very refined dark fruit. Still lively, subtle, very lovely and amazingly showing a real connection to the rest of the Vaucrains. Wow.
Red
Pale strawberry tinged garnet; broad tapering rim is brick orange. Lovely nose, though gentle and quite light - sweet strawberry fruit with a very earthy leafmould base. Not dense or complex, but very pleasing. Mouth entry is very supple, smooth and slightly sour - just a touch of sweet and sour to go with a broad red fruit and woodland earthiness. Tannins nearly resolved, but show as a slightly dusty finish. Interesting and pleasing on it's own, but very light and mature for a '93.
Red
Medium blood red, good colour to the rim. Attractive but simple nose: woodland floor, blackberries. Mouth entry tight and sweet, fills nicely with sousbois and blackberry/cherry fruit on the mid-palate. Good acidity and smooth clean fruit. Unexciting but rather pleasant. **
Red
Medium blood/garnet, just a touch of orange on the rim. Open cool and spicy nose of redcurrants, cherries, and a hefty dollop of sousbois. Really quite classy and burgundian. Quite full bodied and very smooth mouth entry, with lots of red cherry fruit and good acidity. Good savoury earthiness on the mid-palate. A good spiced fruit finish with a hint of sweetness, but slightly drying/dusty tannins. Very good, and should keep for some time yet. ***(*)
White
Quite deep gold, just touched with bronze. Very rich on the nose – initially nutty and honeyed and, I worried, just a touch oxidised. With time it grew in stature and complexity, adding notes of candied apricot, truffle and yellow apples. In the mouth it was fabulously rich and full, yet quite restrained – perhaps structured would be a better word – with great complexity and length. The flavours were fresher than on the nose including green apples but it was whole and majestic. A splendid bottle - sometimes the sun shines …
Red
Medium garnet red, broad paler (orangey) rim. Smooth alcoholic red fruit on the palate. Reasonable acidity but not well balanced. Reasonable length.
Red
The "basic" wine, blended from all the vineyards. Dark plummy cherry colour. Really great nose : big ripe fruit (cherries and plums) and a touch of game. Bold, and a touch volatile. Rich black fruit and earth on the palate. No great complexity but well balanced. An excellent Pinot Noir, and good availability with 3000 cases made. 3+
Red
Bright cherry ruby, very pale on the rim. Striking cherry stone on the nose. Bright fruit and a touch of oak. Soft, almost dull, red fruit on the palate. Finishes clean. Good enough at its pricepoint. 2+
White
From cask: Pale green/yellow tints. Fresh and clean on the nose. Quite creamy textured and spicy. Decent weight of fruit but ultimately rather bland. 2+
Red
From cask: Light colour. Light, sweet and floral nose. Quite ample and sweet cherry fruited. A touch simple but pleasing and well balanced. 3-
Red
From cask: Light colour. Intense, smoky, sulphurous nose. Ripe full and sweet, but poisoned with sulphur today. NR
White
From cask: Attractive yellowish gold. Really full and almost sweet, this just doesn’t seem like Chablis to me. Redeemed by a touch of greenness on the finish. 3-
Red
2001 Joseph Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium blood/ruby. Nice nose : still gamey like the Epenottes, but also a touch of violets here. Quite full ripe red fruits on the palate. Good tannic structure, but ultimately lacking in density and complexity. Poor value. 3+
Red
Medium tomato red. Dirty, earthy nose. Very farmyard, but also some sweet red cherry fruit. Medium weight in the mouth, decent fruit and good acidity, but really lacks depth. Disappointing - probably the weak vintage showing. 3-
Red
2003 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chapelle-Chambertin Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
Medium purplish ruby. Robust, earthy and sweet toned. Quite charming. Smooth and voluptuous mouth entry. Nice freshness too. Very well poised, no hard edges at all, but the tannins are a touch bitter. Really quite good, just lacks a bit of energy and class. 3+
Red
Slightly muddy medium ruby (my pour was near the end of the bottle, so others may have done better). Deep and curly on the nose, spicy and with a lovely floral edge to it. Full and smooth in the mouth with good acidity. Seems too mature – perhaps marred by storage or by the sediment ? – but still a lovely wine. ****
Red
Quite full colour. Smooth and lusciously silky in the mouth, this seems more earthy than mineral. Very composed : cool and fresh and no lack of balance. Lovely drinking, but just lacks flair and precision. 4
White
Big buxom and nutty with a hint of lard and a little greengage fruit. Quite voluptuous, nutty oak and ripe pear fruit. Acidic without being fresh. 2+
Red
Full colour. Ripe, plummy dark and oaky. Nice lift to it. Round and voluptuous cherry fruit but quite sweet - bordering on the jammy. Well balanced with very refined tannins, just lacks a little freshness and excitement. 3-
