When ordering at a restaurant, there was doubt as to how a pink wine will show after 4 years, but it was in fact in an excellent shape. Fresh, full, vibrant, complex - not many roses will live to this age. E. Catovica Mini restaurant (Morinj, Montenegro).

13% alc. Aurelius. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Aged in 225 l barriques, bottled in May 2011. A well made blend, with ripe, attractive cassis and velvety tannins, good intensity, firm body, volume and lasting finish. Has a New Worldish feel to it because of ripe, forthright fruit, but tannins are fresh and structured. VG. Tasted in Montenegro. Producer site www.vinarijakovacevic.co.rs

14.3% alc. Related to Primitivo, from South Dalmazia. Notes of plums, cherries, spice, starting its downward decline, with evident tertiary notes. Mid-weight and velvety, with Primitivo forthrightness and muscle. G. Tasting at One in Porto Montenegro. 35 euros retail, overpriced.

2007 Kabola Malvazija Amfora Zapadna Istra Malvazija Istarska (view label images)
14% alc. Winery in Istria on border with Slovenia. Orange colour. Ceylon tea and figs in aormas. Palate fresh, focused, balanced, long, complex. Needs time to open up. E. Tasting at One in Porto Montenegro. 30 euros retail.

14.5% alc. Western Istria. Husband and wife winery. Burgundy bottle. Intense yellow. Initial lifted and fresh attack gives way to dried apricots, figs and honey. Alcoholic and overblown on the palate, overdone. Tasting at One in Porto Montenegro. 28 euros retail.

14% alc. Winemaker Mladen Rozanic (Младен Рожанич), Western Istria. Orange colour. Salty, briny aromas, on a full side, flavours of figs and Ceylon tea, idiosyncratic. Lasting finish. VG. Tasting at One in Porto Montenegro. 30 euros retail.

12.6% alc. Abstract bright geometrical label. Winery in Istria, Buzet, winemaker Dimitri Brecevic. Stainless steel vinification. Green straw colour. Fresh, not too expressive. Mid weight, mineral, light fruit, palate influenced by a salty sea touch, assertive mineral finish. G. Tasting at One in Porto Montenegro. 14 euros retail.

14.5%alc. Initially sweet aromas, structured, ripe and intense, more on line with a Tuscan Cabernet, with time cleansing tannic freshness comes forward. Balanced. Generally, not my preferred style of Cabernet. VG. From my cellar.

2007 Vinska Kuca Minica Stota Suza Župa-Aleksandrovac White Blend
Tamnjanika grape. 12.65% alc. "Стота суза" ("Hundredth tear"). Тамньяника. Closed and simple at first, but after a a few minutes of contact with air opens up, becomes a fragrant, aromatic mid-bodied wine with expressive notes of lichis, nice freshness and volume. Serbian answer to Gewurztraminer. VG. Tasted in Montenegro.

Crnogorski Krstač. 12.5% alc. Marked on the label as 'Superior White Wine'. Typical local grape. Technically correct volume end wine, with simple lemon and apple flavours. S. Costs around 3.50 in retail. Tasted in Montenegro.

13.5% alc. Viognier and Chardonnay, barrique aged. Mid to full-bodied (sunny Tuscany after all), in harmony, with beautiful creamy texture which is still a challenge for other Italian whites, full, voluminous finish. Gives a sense of completeness and equilibrium. E. Tasted at home.
