Cassis, spices and a surprising sense of place and lively wine making by one of the pioneers of Paso Robles wines. Not really my favorite wines any more but I appreciate the lessons learned and this was a good teacher along the way.

3/16/21, 10:43 PM - My palate has changed over the years so I'm no longer buying Paso Robles wines--mostly Italian and French nowadays I think the Le Cuvier wines from the 90'w and early 2000's will last for a couple of decades but have no idea if the newer versions will do so.

Yes, it's still over the top ripe and has some port-like characteristics, but the oak and alcohol have receded, the ripe fruit now shows some nuances of nutmeg, Christmas cake spices and acidity is pleasantly evident. The years of cellaring have made a brute of a wine into a civilized dinner partner.

10/23/18, 8:08 AM - I had only 1 bottle of this in my cellar and quite frankly it's not a style I am very fond of--but I would recommend a good 8 or m;ore years of cellaring for most of the Portteus reserve level wines.

I've had this in my cellar for 16 years. Amber colored, still brisk with acidity and has some complexity along with sweetness.

Wow, this was good! Still vibrant and layered, not heavy at all, dried fruit and floral notes come through nicely. Tastes much younger than it is.

Friendly bold California style works with this wine. Berry and cassis, some sweet oak and a hint of minerality. Fine at the $13 price point.
