Miscellaneous Wines from a France Trip-Burgundy, Alsace, and Paris; 4/20/2017-4/29/2017: Deep golden. Musty, mushroomy first impression, but my god, this wine was the definition of resilience-it just kept coming and coming for the entire 2 hours that we savored it. One of those old VT wines that has left its sugar behind and remains rich but shockingly dry. No botrytis. An ephemeral sense of dried peach, extraordinary acidity for this very hot year, and a deep thread of soil. It reminds me of other ancient wines I've had that capture the essence of the grape through their remaining skeletal shape that remains after the fruit and fat have faded. A singular experience.

1/25/21, 7:17 PM - This has got to be one of the best reviews on all of CT. Great writing! I just drank a bottle this weekend. Mine was off dry, and if I had to guess, an RS 15-20 range, but the acidity is what kept it from tasting anywhere near the sweetness on the palate of an aged Sauternes. Great sediment. Loved it.

Medium yellow in color. Flavors of pineapple and guava. Moderate oak notes (80% new French, 20% stainless). Buttery, suspect 100% malo. Low acidity and minerality. Nice for a New World chard.

2013 Wind Gap Wines Pinot Noir Sun Chase Vineyard Sonoma Coast
Some rusted fruit, moderate acidity. Black fruit more than red flavors. Mild off notes, mildly out of balance. Didn’t care for it. Did pair well though with roasted turkey. Feel like that GaragisteWine has done a bamboozle on this Wind Gap winery. Have had multiple wines from them and none of them good. Disappointing.

Mixture of black and red fruit. Very nice wine. Acidity is a bit high and distracting for me.

2015 Bodegas Juan Gil Monastrell Jumilla
I’ve followed Juan Gil for about 10+ years now, and I used to think the silver label was a good value for low end Monastrell. Unfortunately the price has crept up mildly and quality has slightly gone down, or else my palate has changed. The wine has some nice fruit and complexity but has always been off balance to my taste. I don’t think I need any more. Time to move on to their Blue label which rocks.

Pop n poured at Roux 30A in Florida for their tasting menu with steak. Tight -- should have been decanted for a couple of hours, or better yet, aged for 5-10 more years. A bit rough around the ages, nice fruit, not complex, flavors have not come together.
  • SWHighlander commented:

6/5/19, 8:05 PM - Sounds fun. Wish a higher end restaurant like this one would take the care to decant wines like this when they’re doing a “prestige” wine pairing with a tasting menu, but rarely is that the case.

Fernando de Castilla is one of the top sherry producers and this wine is no exception. It is more complex and perfectly balanced compared to most amontillados. I love it. I will say that it is a touch over caramelized and viscous for me (for an amontillado) and I wouldn't mind if it had a slightly stronger brininess to it.

3/7/18, 6:00 PM - Tim, I got it at their winery in Jerez!

The best sherry collection I have found in Denver is at The Proper Pour in The Source warehouse now calling itself The Source Hotel in RiNo. The owner and mixologist extraordinaire, MacLean Hedges, is really into sherry. I want to say they either carry Fernando de Castillo or some Equipo Navazos -- which is sourced from FdC and El Maestro Sierra, if I'm not mistaken.

2004 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru Chenin Blanc
Surprisingly light in color and viscosity, but wonderful aromas and sweetness matched by acidity. Lovely.

2005 Alois Kracher Chardonnay/Welschriesling Grande Cuvée TBA #7 Nouvelle Vague Neusiedlersee
Bright golden amber in color. Viscous, syrupy texture. Stone fruit and honey notes predominate. Very sweet, some acidity cuts that down but could stand a touch more to my palate.

Drank with a wine group at dinner alongside a Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey sauternes, paired with a crème brûlée. The Kracher always has those who love it, but I thought the somewhat lighter (in all ways) sauternes was drinking a bit better and was a better pairing.

Five hour decant, the nose is a deep rich blackberry and stewed fruit. The palate is also quite rich but not over the top in any way, the well integrated tannins and solid acidity back the dark fruit and clove elements. A thick mouthfeel and a long finish put this polished wine in a great category.

This is a great wine. From a magnum format, this was golden in color. A bit of floral, citrus, mineral notes. Full bodied, dry, complex, beautifully balanced. Drinking well by itself and also with some hen. Long finish.

A blend of Cognac and juice from red grape varieties aged for five years in oak casks. A fruity, full-flavoured aperitif to be enjoyed well chilled. Tasted oak, caramel, raisins, apricots...
  • SWHighlander commented:

11/24/16, 8:37 AM - Is this from red grapes? It looks more white, but I can't find anything from the winery or elsewhere to confirm one way or the other.
