Deep purple/burgundy with neon ruby highlights in the light. Currants, cherry and black pepper up front. Lovely notes of toasted marshmallow and no.2 pencil. Great tannin structure, ready to go with a decant but could get better in 3-5 years.

Near black core trailing to crimson. I swear this got darker with some air. Blackberry, smoked meats, fresh cracked pepper. A real umami feel to this wine. Plush tannins, acid in balance. Reminds me a bit of a burly version of Bandol. Perfect BBQ wine, it craves meat and roasted vegetables.

Red cherry, blackberry, vanilla and cinnamon spice. Very big chewy tannins with a slightly acidic and sour green finish. May need time to come together but just OK tonight.

Thin and acidic. Not a lot of fruit. Either a bad bottle or not my style.

A 2 hour decant brings out a wave of black and blue berries, campfire smoke, tar and sweet vanilla oak. Peppery on the back end with a 30 second finish. Northern rhone salty olive umami.

Just gobs of meaty, gamey cherry goodness but a lovely lifted floral perfume. I continue to be impressed with Syrah from this team.

Crimson/black core fading to garnet with flecks of purple. Blueberry, violets, dried plum, black pepper and tobacco. Pretty big stem inclusion tannins - little signs of oak influence. Wonderful representation of what California Syrah could/should be. Massive but not all fruit in your face.

2017 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Evangelho Vineyard Contra Costa County Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel (view label images)
1/22/2021 - seanucsb Likes this wine:

Deep translucent ruby and sunset red. Dried cranberry, raspberry and cherry. A little deeper/darker than previous Evangelhos' from Bedrock as I recall. More southern rhone than cru Bojo this time around. Signature Contra Costa tannins - silky, sandy and smooth. California garrigue - bay/sage also showing with some glass time.

Near black center to a ruby/brick edge. Blueberry cobbler, old leather baseball glove and redwood forest floor. Some touches of smoke and soy. Umami! The tannins here have started to settle and the wine is smooth as glass. Hides the 15.2% well. Didn't seem hot at all. Drinking well now. For me this is likely at peak but could continue to develop the secondary framework

Huge and hot out of the gate. Needed 2-3 hours in the decanter to come together. Cherry pie, Smoked meat and green olives. Still great after 24 hours, likely could improve with a few years.

Still fresh after 5 years. Stewed plum and cherry. Holiday spice, mint and Eucalyptus. A mix of Evangelho, Mori and Salvador (RIP) fruit. Prominent Contra Costa silky tannins....it's at a great spot right now for a powerful but not jammy Zinfandel.

Deep ruby core with the faintest bricked edge. Stewed blackberries, sweet cherries, coastal bay leaf and black pepper. Barely showing any age, could likely go another 3-5 years and further develop. A little hot at 15.1% but not a knock you back big Paso Zin. Pretty great balance here with some brawn.

From a tiny vineyard of old vines in the Santa Clara Valley just outside the Santa Cruz AVA. Dark red fruits up front, white pepper and forest floor / resin. Took about 30 minutes to open up and it was ready to go! Field blend of Zinfandel, Carignan and a few others....

Medium body and leaner than what I am used to from LL but bursting with red cherry fruit and raspberry bramble. Some very unique spice (pepper/clove/allspice?) Which really complemented the fruit and made for a good food wine.

Wonderful blend of Grenache/Syrah/Graciano/Clairette Blanche from the York Mountain AVA near Paso Robles. Out of the gate this was all savory: salty olives, smokey meat. After some air this revealed some deep cherry and plum backed up by some big structured tannins. I think this has some potential to develop and will drink great for 5+ years.

About 2/3 Zinfandel and 1/3 Petite Sirah, this is highly aromatic and perfumed. Ripe red brambly raspberry and blackberry. All primary fruit right now, but there is some spice and oak on the back end. Can only think this will come together nicely in a few years.

Carignane and Mourvedre from an old vine California "gran cru" site in Contra Costa.

What great brightness from the fruit here! Vine fresh raspberries and river rock mineral acidity. Nice complicity for a medium weight wine, finding some herbaceous tones and a hint of meatiness.

Deep oxblood red to a nearly black center. There are massive violet florals followed by briar patch blackberries and fresh cracked black pepper. For a 6 year old wine this is still fresh and vibrant, the tannins are huge and I think a few more years will really bring this together into something special.

Creamy lemon curd, pineapple and plumeria. Gobs of oak right now - it was better on the chilled side to hold that back. A surprising bit of gun flint reminding me of Chablis but not quite enough acidic zing to back that up.

All black fruit up front, but much more secondary on this bottle. Fragrant violets, gamey salted olive and semisweet cocoa. This is Jonata's entry level blend of various grapes (Syrah, Cabernet, petit verdot among others). Really demonstrates the depth that can come from Ballard Canyon in Santa Barbara county.

2 hour decant revealed a complex nose of crushed black fruits, cocoa, freshly tilled earth. The acid balance and round tannins in a 15.7%!! wine made this a pleasure to drink. The 2011 vintage was considered a down year in central California, but I find these wines are developing to be contenders.

From the famous Palisades PS vineyard, this wine shows deep crimson purple/black to the core. Powerful aromas of blackberry and blueberry. Tannins here are still huge - wine needed some air to smooth out but could prob go another 5+ years easily. A nice balance of acidity here which was nice to see compared to a lot of fruit bomb PS.
