7/4/23, 5:32 AM - Very much agree. And it’s interesting you mention that price range as that is the exact price I pick them up for in USD. I’m partially based in Japan, which is over half the export market, so they’re “relatively” easy to find through local retailers. I see you’re based in Stockholm - do you just pick them up from the Systembolaget at that price as soon as possible after they arrive?
7/4/23, 7:03 PM - Oh, interesting. At least it gives everyone some chance I suppose….no mattter how small. Good luck with your refreshing and clicking!
3/29/23, 6:38 AM - A while ago now but sorry this was corked for you. I recommend you change the rating to flawed however and remove the score. This would be the standard practice on the platform.
1/6/23, 4:24 AM - Couldn’t agree more with the note generally and an excellent comparison with the Ridge wines. Thanks.
10/9/22, 3:06 AM - @JHH51 - I’m assuming you mean the last comment, but correct me if wrong. For my palate, Brunello is not worth aging for significant periods of time. Yes, it’s fun to drink them aged but I don’t think they develop the complexity of Bordeaux, Barolo, Rioja, Northern Rhones etc. This is based on my personal experience of having visited Montalcino twice to taste multiple aged bottles (which actually aren’t that easy to source) + blind tastings + tastings of various bottles from my own cellar.
10/9/22, 3:06 AM - @SchlepDog - Similarly, I’m assuming you felt some incredulity to my palate preference but do correct me if wrong. In particular, I’d be interested to hear your opinion if that’s the case. My relative disaffection for Brunello is certainly something that bothers me as it was one of my first wine loves. It was a bit saddening to sell all my 06s a few years back but the evidence of my own palate was difficult to ignore. If there is a bottle (or a reframing of my palate) that changes that, I’d love to find out.
10/9/22, 5:53 PM - Ah, got it. For me, It’s not a fundamental contradiction rather poor and incomplete articulation in my notes. I now see this was likely the source of JHH51's comment also. Thanks for pointing this out. I've supplemented the note - hopefully, it’s helpful to anyone who reads this and for my own records as my opinions evolve.
11/12/22, 11:20 PM - Thanks for the comment JHH51….I was on a roll with the misunderstandings! My apologies. It was helpful to me, and hopefully the community, that SchlaepDog took the time to expand on an acronym. Good call on your Poggiones I reckon - I personally won’t be doing that but makes sense.
10/17/22, 6:32 AM - This is very interesting. Same question back to you - how long did you decant? If you did decant for a few hours or more, it makes me think there is bottle variation here. There was 5 years between the 2 bottles I consumed, but the 2022 bottle felt so much more open and ready for business. Of course, that could be 5 years of evolution but felt more significant than that. Sorry it wasn’t a great experience.
6/23/22, 4:05 AM - Thanks - it really was a superb bottle. It was a 2-hour decant and then drank over 3 hours.
5/27/22, 4:08 AM - Hopefully you’ve managed to do so! Based on the 2014 I had tonight, this is excellent stuff and is still evolving positively.
2/5/22, 6:19 PM - Great - thanks for sharing and glad it was useful. Hope you enjoyed the wine.
1/31/22, 6:45 AM - Thanks - I hope it was useful! I see you’ve recently passed 1,000 tasting notes. I’m just about to pass that milestone myself....
3/25/21, 5:05 PM - Thank You! Edited as necessary.
1/23/21, 4:20 PM - Thank you for the comment.
12/10/20, 4:25 PM - Thanks for the comments. Indeed, It does seem there is a lot of love for this wine! That’s great if people enjoy it but I’m in complete agreement with you.
10/30/20, 5:04 PM - Hmm - Sorry, I cant fully remember. I know I had a young wine quite recently where I was surprised by the amount of sediment coating the shoulder after pouring. It could have been this. Why do you ask?
10/7/20, 6:38 AM - Enjoy! I think it’s a great idea to open one in its youth like this. It can still be enjoyed even though it will get so much better. Unfortunately, I only have 1 more but I do have a full case of the Volcanic Hill 16 so looking forward to trialing that in the near future.
5/16/20, 6:29 PM - Many thanks for the comment! Really not much effort to post the note though - these wines are easy to write about! When I had the 1964 in Spain, I had 2 real epiphanies on well made Rioja. Firstly, how well they age and secondly how well they food match. We had a 22 course meal at El Portal at Ezcaray and this bottle matched with every course. It was extraordinary.
8/14/19, 1:33 AM - I've had some issue with flawed bottles also - 2 of 3 so far actually. I love this wine so hopefully bad luck but have some trepidation.
10/27/18, 7:21 AM - Thanks for the comment. No, it wasn’t corked. I know that fault and this is the 2nd bottle of this I have tasted. Both were identically horrid. Usually I can explain a gap between my preference and others but I honestly can’t in this case. For me, it is an emperor has no clothes moment and a genuine example of putrid, faulty winemaking. I tasted with 3 other of my WSET level 3 alumni and we were all similarly incredulous.
4/11/18, 5:09 PM - I wish I had some more!
1/11/18, 3:33 PM - Thanks for the comment - I can see the contradiction. For me, it’s the context in which that oak is added rather than absolute level. I’m not someone who is against oak at all. The oak makes sense to me when I drink a Rioja but I just felt frustrated while tasting this. My current benchmark for Monvigliero is the Burlotto 2012 which gives me a purity of expression that I felt was masked in this by the oak. On the score, I’m definitely being harsh in giving it an 85 and I’m sure I’d score it higher if I tasted it blind. However, with the availability of all information, I just felt annoyed while drinking it so gave it what I felt to be personally accurate at the time. Hope this helps explain my logic and thanks for getting me to put my thoughts down.
1/11/18, 4:02 PM - Absolutely on the scores. I use my CT scores to track my personal thoughts and progression rather than trying to objectify quality for others as a critic should do or as I would do for a wine exam. A little selfish and not the most helpful thing for the community at times as I can be scattered! And I assume scattering among everyone else also! Unfortunate that the days of moderately priced Burlotto Monvigliero may be over...
7/30/17, 4:45 PM - Enjoy those bottles!
6/23/17, 3:10 PM - Ah yes! I had it with dinner last night in Haro and it was served very cold. That's when I jotted my note. I returned to the wine at the end of the meal when it had sat on the table for 1 hour plus and your comment has reminded me that it was much better. Great advice for future.
1/1/16, 5:23 PM - Many thanks. I'd never noticed that before and a quick check of the stores where I buy in Japan and Singapore shows it is reflected here also. I shall edit my note and opinion to remind me.
1/13/16, 6:30 AM - Thanks Bplant. In addition to the pricing differential, it's also a good reminder for me on the blend difference. More lazy comparison on my part! Stimulated by the discussion on this, I can sense a true tasting coming on of the 1st / 2nd / and 3rd wines (Le Difese / Le Volte) of each tasted blind. I'll have to do this when back in Japan though as the Singapore prices are crazy....
8/9/15, 7:02 PM - Thanks Harley. I already owned a case of the 01 and a half case of the 04 but went out and bought a case of the 05 after drinking this bottle. I'll be enjoying these for the rest of my life I'd imagine.
2/13/14, 3:01 AM - You've just joined some dots! I had a Ridge Geyserville 2011 just this weekend and posted a note of "Italian". I had no recollection that I posted a "SuperTuscan" note for this wine until now....Must be something in the Ridge style.
1/28/14, 7:28 AM - Ha Ha, Super! This has been my strategy since posting this note. You can't go wrong with any vintage of Fontodi Chianti Classico but the 06 was tremendous as with most Sangiovese in Tuscany. The 06 Flacianello is now very pricey though if you can find it. Looking forward to the 2010 once available.
11/3/12, 5:33 AM - Pop one then buy another one to replace it. It works like magic. No harm done. Will look out for your note as it'll help me to decide on whether to finally buy a case....
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
