I attempted something entirely different by decanting for 6 hours. Wow! What an astonishing difference. The wine regained its Lynch Bages life, extremely compelling with a great nose, taste, and noteworthy finish. Bravo!

4/6/21, 6:28 AM - Yes, the wine a showing tertiary development. However, as with many 2000's they require a long decant.

First experience with the 2017 La Verdad. Decided to give the 2017 Carter cabs some time after having a 2017 OG around a year ago which I thought clearly needed more time. Decanted during the day for six hours. Dark ruby fruit - currants, blackberry, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with a nice purity and decent depth/concentration - medium/medium plus body. Nice flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, cassis, and a mineral/graphite component. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep and just a little tart. Enjoyable with a decent decant but I’m going to lay the other bottles for another year hoping for a little more. In my opinion, a little better than the 93 rating from WA at this stage. 100% cab.

3/1/21, 9:24 AM - Completely agree. I opened it yesterday with a 4 hour decant, and it needs more age. Hope all is well.

3/1/21, 1:10 PM - 2011 was a very poor year. I believe if you hold this for a few years, you will be rewarded.

3/1/21, 3:09 PM - This is my first 2017 that I am drinking. For the most part, I am holding off on the 2016's and drinking older wine with 4 hour decants.

Decided to revisit because I'm thinking about buying more. What a great wine - the best Sonoma based cab that I've had. Dark ruby fruit - currants/cassis, blackberry, and dark cherry. Really smooth with a beautiful purity and solid depth/concentration - it has added some weight from the last tasting around three months ago. Once again, really nice vibrant/full flavors of dark berries, spice box/licorice, and chocolate/cocoa. Long finish. Slow ox for five hours and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time but drinking quite well after the slow ox despite its youth - in light of how well everything is integrated I would never guess that this was a 2016 cab if drinking blind. The profile reminds me of a great vintage of the Carter Weitz cab. Once again, no surprise of the 97+ rating from Dunnuck. 100% cab.

11/16/19, 1:25 PM - I am considering purchasing 4 to 6 bottles. Do you think this is as good as it gets given the price range? Thank you. PS... Your outstanding opinions made me spend more money than Jeb, Parker and Vinous. That is OK.

11/16/19, 3:41 PM - Thank you so much! I will pick up both. Your palate is spot on. I genuinely appreciate you commentary. All the best.

We have a cherry and dark fruit bonanza here. It is exceptional. If I were younger, then I probably would hold it for a year or two. Even so, it is a beautiful wine that you will not disappoint. The attack and middle are unique and truly special. The finish is firm but not off the charts outstanding. It will only get better. Drink now, or hold. I cannot resist this beauty. So, I am drinking my six pack now. Cheers!

Small yield/ production from vines that have been stressed. The color is intensely dark and as with all of the Carters for 2017, the nose is fantastic. On the palate, intense dark ripe black and blueberry fruit, dark fruits, clearly these vines had to work with the end results that are fantastic, flavorful, just amazing. This wine like most of the lineup is big with smooth tannins, nuance, balanced and delicious.
97+ Points.

Opened a bottle at dinner: this is a smooth monster - great nose, back end is tobacco and leather. Very dark red fruit on the nose, and on the palate that moves with a touch of darkness, effortlessly. This is smooth and powerful and an excellent wine. Could age, but why bother, it's just delightful now.

7/2/19, 5:10 PM - Both you and BadMonkey enjoy similar wine. BadMonkey is amazing. I decided to purchase six bottles of this wine based on both of you, and JD, Vinous and the Wine Advocate. Thus far, many of the 2016's have been outstanding. Thanks.

Oh my goodness, what a beautiful wine. I open the bottle for decanting, but after tasting this wine we decided why bother. Previous notes apply, what a tremendous drinking experience, this is probably the best Carter O.G. ever in my experience drinking Carter Cellar Beckstoffer Cabernets. 100 points.

Dark ruby fruit - blackberry, dark currants, and dark cherry. I wasn’t wowed by the depth/concentration (medium plus body), however, it’s really smooth (seamless from beginning to end) coupled with a beautiful purity. Nice vibrant flavors of dark berries, spice box/licorice, a little chocolate/cocoa, and a nice mineral/graphite component. Fairly long finish. Decanted for one hour and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time but drinking quite well after the decant despite its youth. No question the best Sonoma based cab that I’ve had and one of the better Thomas Rivers Brown cabs that I’ve had. 100% cab.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown of the Wine Advocate must be on crack to give this brewing masterpiece the dismal rating she indelibly stamped. This wine has beautiful color, a has fanatic and robust nose with dark fruits on the palate, with a stellar 60 second finish. Although young, it is extremley difficult to resist this beauty. I find no way to reconcile her paltry rating. The wine is deliriously delicious. Viva Quivet!

12/20/18, 6:05 AM - Yes, it was decanted but only for less than one hour. Love the wine!

  • fastcar888 commented:

12/20/18, 6:34 AM - Your evaluations are significantly better than Vinous, Parker and Wine Spectator. Parker reviews are no longer valid to my palate regarding Napa or Washington State. They have really gone downhill. Thank you.

Dark purple fruit - blackberry, dark currants, dark raspberry, blueberry, and a little dark cherry. Really smooth, nice purity, and solid depth/concentration. Nice vibrant flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, and a mineral/graphite component. Fairly long finish. Decanted for one hour and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time but drinking quite well after the decant despite its youth. However, I'm hoping that it adds a little weight with some more time. I'm going to lay down my remaining bottles for another 6 to 12 months. Nonetheless, a really nice vintage of this wine and no surprise of the great reviews/ratings from WA and Jeb Dunnuck. It will be interesting to see if Suckling/WS low-balls this vintage like the 88 rating for the 2015 vintage. 100% cab.

11/20/18, 4:20 PM - Badmonkey, you are costing me a small fortune between Myriad, Quivet, Realm and others. But all I have to say is, "thank you." Many of the wines you review are fairly unknown to anyone who is not living in California, specifically the Napa area. Your reviews are spot on and insightful. Great stuff!

Dark ruby/purple fruit - dark currants, blueberry, dark raspberry, and a little dark plum. Like Mike's other 2016 cabs, really smooth with a nice purity, however, the fruit came across a little lighter than most of the other cabs. Like previous vintages, I believe the Pellet fruit needs more time than most of the other single vineyard cabs to fill-out. Nice vibrant flavors of dark berries and some spice box. Fairly long finish. The bottles were apparently open for a couple hours in light of a prior tasting. Approachable and enjoyable at this stage, however, I believe another year or so will benefit the Pellet fruit to let it open-up and fill-out a little more. Nonetheless, a nice vintage of this wine and as Mike also notes on the Quivet website I believe this vineyard has matured tremendously with the last two vintages. 100% cab.

Living in Florida, I have no insight into the magnificent boutique wines of Napa. Your reviews are very helpful and greatly appreciated.
