Absolutely wonderful wine. Soft, sensuous, full of fruit and with silky tannins.

Delicious drinking right now. Will keep for a few years yet but, with it offering such enjoyment now, why wait?

Impenetrable, even after time in decanter. Good black fruits lurking in there, but so reticent they are easy to miss. Strong meaty nose - like sniffing an Oxo cube. Needs much longer to evolve. Half of the bottle left in decanter to try the following day. Maybe worth noting that, when I went to the Chateau in 2002, the owners recommended decanting Le Prestige (as well as Le Cedre) 2 or 3 days before you intend to drink it.

Good for its age, but not massively evolved - four square. More supple than the 1996 but that's not saying much.

Complex, elegant, supple and delicious. Drinking beautifully now but will offer drinking pleasure for another five years.

Brutish and unyielding. After 24 hours in decanter it still was tight and dumb.

Excellent but still young. Keep another 3-5 years before drinking.

Atypical, animal nose showing little appeal. Disjointed and imbalanced on the palate, with high acidity and angular, abrasive tannins. Insufficient fruit. Not enjoyable at all, a disappointment.

More reserved and structured than the Villa Gemma opened the same evening, this was an excellent accompaniment to dinner. Refined, restrained, but powerful. Very good indeed.

Deep, blood red core with next to no fade on the rim. Attractive nose of crushed berries, cherries, bitter chocolate and a hint of wet stone minerality. Lovely smooth entry with predominant stone fruits and bitter cherry acidity - acidity is long and is supported by well-worked tannins which become more pronounced on the finish. Lacking a little complexity, but good depth of flavours. Velvety, but not as rich or as chocolatey as some merlots - quite mineral.

Youthful garnet core with a slight fade at the rim. Decanted a couple of hours before drinking. Nose not massively expressive. Some violets and a note of herbs. Light and delicate on the palate. Blackcurrant, graphite, stone fruits and minerals. Dry but not drying. Lots of fine tannin and some good acidity - clearly in need of more time but has the raw materials to develop.

Deep garnet core, full to the rim. Deliciously savoury nose of cedar, cassis and oak. Not so good on the palate - spicy and smoky but hollow in the mid-palate. Pleasant acidity and tannin, but lacking fruit. The wine came into its own with roast lamb, however, and the classy structure makes an excellent accompaniment to the meat.

Opened and drunk before the Chateau Lafon Rochet drunk with the same meal. Not as lifted or as enchanting as the bottle I drank in Paris in March 2006. No note taken at the time, but I remember being a little disappointed with this.

No note taken at the time, but from memory this was very enjoyable. Slightly foursquare. with rich fruit and good structure but lacking that extra little something to make it truly memorable.

Vigorous, purple red core with a little fade on the rim. Vibrant cassis, but not a typical Pessac nose - the wine lacks the gravelly minerality of its youth. Good fruit on the palate with fine tannins but not very complex. Chalky on the finish.

Bottle showed some wetness around the foil, but thankfully was not spoiled. Lovely limpid crimson colour. Direct and focused acidity on the entry, which levels out to a well-integrated palate of fresh and zesty strawberries. Fine tannins - polite and unobtrusive - but enough to manage the acidity. inviting, sweet nose with a hint of vegetation (grass, straw). Wonderful although will continue to improve.

Beautiful, deep, golden honey colour - surprising for such a young wine. Lifted exotic notes of apricot, pineapple and lychees. Candied pineapple and golden syrup too. Rich, unctuous and creamy on the palate, with a controlled zing of acidity. A little apple and lime present amongst the exotic fruits and caramel. Absolutely delicious.

Rich, deep golden colour with amazing depth to the hue. Powerful, honeyed nose with faint notes of citrus and molasses. Thick, sweet, honeyed - almost creamy - texture with a sharp needle of acidity making the palate tingle. Tropical notes on long finish. Excellent.
White - Off-dry

Unfortunately this bottle was too old. The acidity had gone: there was a faint hint of it on the entry, but it didn't last long and all there was on the palate was the sweetness. A real shame - it tasted a little like apple juice.

Deep ruby red, showing little evolution on the rim. Trademark Pauillac nose of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite and pencil lead. A little red fruit too. Good acidity and firm tannins, with warm fruit and a touch of mint / menthol on the finish. A little pepper on the nose after some time, and green pepper with the menthol on the finish. Savoury, angular and very good but lacking richness.

Baked, concentrated nose. Pronounced minerality over the top of the blackcurrant. Tight-knit and well-built on the palate, with good integration of tannins and balanced acidity. Typical minerality and gravel; dry and savoury but a little hollow.

Ruby/orange core, with a brick rim. Plummy nose from the merlot, smokey oak and a hint of bitter chocolate and pencil shavings. Light, thin, not particularly ripe but fairly smooth. Warm alcohol on the finish, but quite stalky.

The cork disintegrated on opening, and had to be pushed through. The bottle was then decanted. Tawny core with a brick-orange rim. Lovely, mature nose - slightly sweet. Tobacco and leather, with notes of cedar, strawberry and violets. Very light on palate, but there is still surprising tannin and vibrant acidity. After opening up, it takes on a far more classic Bordeaux character. Oak and muted blackcurrant leaf on the nose, with a subtle hint of very good dark chocolate and mint. Rich but restrained blackcurrant on the palate. Strong tannin and very fresh acid. Not a very long finish, but well balanced. Slight sweetness on the finish. For a 26-year old wine, this really was very impressive and very, very enjoyable.

Pale strawberry red, not vibrant nor deep. Faint hint of orange on rim. Lovely nose of strawberries and violets, with a faint hint of oak - there's an autumn leaf note there too. Nice spiciness develops as the wine opens up. Light and supple with up-front acidity; red currants giving way to strawberries and plums. Woody notes and a little tobacco. Fine tannins which aren't quite as smooth as I'd like. Ready to drink and very, very tasty.

Mid to light browny-red, the core is not much deeper, whilst the rim is a fainter orange. Smokey, meaty nose of sultanas, raisins, treacle toffee and blueberries. Zesty, spicy tang on palate. Full-bodied, honey-like texture. Well-balanced, with very fine tannins. Nice finish, well made. An hour after opening, sweet vanilla oak had come to the fore, turning the fruit to jammy flavours. Still well balanced.

Deep blood red colour, right to the rim. Blackcurrant and blackberry, vanillary oak, spicy on the nose. Smooth, juicy red & black fruits, well integrated tannins and the high alcohol is well-managed. Long finish, succulent. Very, very tasty.

Muted nose of blackcurrant and a little strawberry, with cedar and pencil shavings on agitation. Well-balanced on the palate with good tannin and nice acidity. Fruit is not so prominent and more jumbled - blackcurrant, stewed red fruits. Fairly long finish. Nice, correct St Estephe at the start of its drinking window, still with another 5 or more years ahead of it. Very enjoyable.

Quite a dull crimson, with brickish tinges. An inviting sweet vanilla and cherry attack with a hint of barnyard too. Vanillary oak comes to the fore over time. Sweet entry and then very ripe, sweet red fruits, cherries and plums on the mid-palalte. Tannins not perfectly integrated - a little coarse and there's a hint of alcohol at the back of the throat, but then this wine weighs in at 14%. Cherries and plums sum this wine up. Dry on the finish. Very tasty.

Beautiful, bright ruby, although not deep. Smokey, herby nose with a hint of toasty, meaty oak. Fresh cassis and blackberries. Smooth, bouncy flavour - very tasty indeed! Lashings of blackcurrant and strawberry. Beautifully fine tannins, with a long, juicy, fruity finish. Delicious.

Orangey rim on a still fairly deep ruby core. Closed nose - clearly tannic. Black fruits but not massively aromatic. Big, tannic structure, smooth and creamy. Bitter cherry and cedar on the mid-palate to finish. After an hour or so in the glass, the tannins had not softened and whilst there was a little black currant and dark chocolate on the nose, there was still very little fruit on the palate. Fantastic in terms of structure, but far from sensuous.
White - Off-dry

Lovely light golden syrup colour. Syrupy, honeyed, buttercup nose with a tangy note of citrus peel. Smooth entry with sharp lemon acidity; giving way to thick, creamy sweetness before echoes of the sharpness come back to the finish. Very acute and electric finish, long and tingling. Absoultely delicious and highly refreshing.

Bitter cherry and cedar on the mid-palate to the finish. After an hour in glass, still very tannic; a little bit of chocolate and blackcurrant on the nose but not much fruit on the palate. Fantastic structure - big-boned and architectural - but not the most sensuous of wines.
