Popped and poured, no bricking, no funk, just beautiful deep purple color with a fresh nose of cherry, blue plums, lavender, and hints of leather. Oak treatment but very subtle. This wine was beautifully integrated with soft tannins and a long finish. Great mouth feel. Years left on this wine.

Much more youthful than its almost 20 years in the bottle. Light, clear ruby color, no sign of bricking. The nose was heavy on dirt and mushroom, with highlights of bright cherry and roses. The palate picked up the red fruits with cherry and raspberry notes. Smooth and inviting through the mid-palate; great mouth feel. Medium+ acid through the mid-palate and the jowls. The tannins are assertive but refined, and the finish is medium to long. Beautiful, balanced, and integrated, I'd give this another 5-7 years of aging potential.

Good structure and well-integrated with only 12% alcohol. Black cherry, dark plum, and tobacco leaf on the nose, more dark cherry on the palate. Soft tannins and a medium+ finish. I like serving wines from the Grand River Valley because they are always such a pleasant surprise for my guests.

PNP, beautiful wine. Dark, rich color, almost inky. Nose had red berry, eucalyptus, leather and spice, with a floral component. Palate showed beautiful composition and great balance with a solid tannic structure and a long finish. Glad I have another case of these!

Beautiful, clear, deep purple, no bricking or rim variation, no real sign of age. Mineral, eucalyptus, some blue fruit on the nose, hint of vanilla. Palate showed more mineral, earth, great mouthfeel, medium to medium minus acid, with soft tannins and a long finish. 13.5 alcohol seemed nicely in balance. I say there is no real rush to drink this wine; it’s got some years left on it.

Dark purple and clear, almost no sign of bricking, looks much younger than it is. Nose has chocolate, leather, red fruits, rose petals, and a little mineral, with cherry and hints of vanilla and baking spice on the palate. Nice acid and gorgeous, soft but assertive tannins give way to a lengthy finish. There's a lot more aging potential in this wine.

Deep purple color, great funk on the nose, high but well-integrated acid, soft tannins. Interesting and beautiful wine.

Still bright and clear, beautiful ruby color with almost no rim variation. Great nose with some forest floor, cola, mushroom, dark red cherry and some mineral notes. On the palate, fruit is a little less ripe, and the cola and mineral characteristics come through more strongly. Pretty acid at a medium plus level. The tannins are soft but still apparent, and this wine has a great finish. You would never know this wine was over 20 years old.

Beautiful Burgundian funk on the nose with cola and sour cherry and a gorgeous mouth feel. Well balanced, nice finish. I tasted a couple friends blind on this and they all thought it was from Burgundy. Finger Lakes fruit and a young, very talented Ohio winemaker. Laurentia's vineyards have now matured enough for them to make estate wines. I can't wait to try them!

This was a very pretty, feminine wine with high floral notes on the nose and great balance across the palate and subtle tannic structure. I was lucky enough to have this with a spectacular truffled "fabulous fungus" risotto and a confit leg of duck. Wow!

Popped and poured. Lighter in color, consistent with the style and low alcohol (12.5%). Nice, old world nose with earth and funky forest floor/wet leaves. Bright sour cherry on the front of the palate with great acid. At first seemed a little thin on the finish as the mid-palate acid was the only note. After about 20 minutes, the finish emerged as the acid gave way to a hint of sweetness and soft tannins.

Very pretty wine. After 25 years in the bottle, the up- front fruitiness had eased into subtle notes of cherry and tobacco, elegant mid-palate and a medium finish. I was pleasantly surprised at how vibrant and balanced this wine remains despite its age.

Gorgeous nose of damp earth with subtle floral notes. Bright red fruits on the front of the palate with a faint undercurrent of red meat at the mid palate. Nice acid and lovely tannins. This wine is beautifully balanced with structure and a nice long finish. I only have 2 bottles of Jackey Truchot left if my cellar. I will miss them when they are gone!

What a gorgeous wine. Popped and poured. Slightly subtle nose (compared to the Big d'Big 2000 that went just before it). Incredible, silky mouth feel, nice sour cherry flavor with a hint of earth. The tannins were softer than I expected, but still nicely chewy with a long, elegant finish. Paired with skirt steak...nice combo!

Opened as the third wine of the night at Root restaurant in New Orleans. Opened and decanted about two hours before drinking. Still deep purple color, gorgeous in the glass. Beautiful floral nose, clear and crisp red cherry at the very front of the palate that gave way to some subtle blueberry notes transitioning to a medium length finish. The tannins are soft, but elegant and beautiful. This was not a big, powerful Napa cab, but rather was soft and feminine and beautiful. Lots going on here. The wine had not yet begun to fade, but I don't think there's enough structure here for more than a couple more years before it begins to decline.

Popped and poured. Nose was a little musty at the open, but that blew off after about 15 minutes in the glass. Color is deep purple and clear, with no signs of bricking. Twenty years in bottle have given this wine a softness on the palate that is quite pleasing, with red berries and hints of tar that flood the palate, giving way to elegant, rounded tannis and a medium finish. Properly stored, I'd say this wine still has a few years left on it before it fades, but I don't think it has enough structure remaining to be a thirty year wine.

Aging very well. Strawberry still showing on the nose, this wine is brightly acidic but is still able to convey real depth and complexity on the palate. Great balance and nice finish.

By far the star of a mini Riesling tasting. The sweetness was subtle and very well balanced with the mineral notes. Hints of peach and citrus.

Popped and poured and evolved substantially over 30 minutes in the glass. Nice earthy funk on the nose, though a little more subtle than on the 2008. Bright cherry notes on the front of the palate that give way to more subtle notes of blueberry and plum. Medium finish. On the whole, nicely traditional style, well balanced.

Significant bricking and astringency at the open. Decanted a let sit about an hour and the fruit started to emerge. Clearly past it's prime, but still pretty good. Big nose of chocolate and raisins giving way to red fruits on the palate and a nice, long finish. Thin, no real mouth feel, as I expected when I saw it hit the decanter.

Burgundian funk on the nose, wet straw and dirt, giving way to subtle red fruits on the palate and a good finish. Elegant, balanced wine.

Decent fruit at the outset, but the pleasantness of the sour cherry is quickly overwhelmed by an unpleasant green/grassy sensation, giving way to a thin finish. After about an hour, the grassiness faded, and a hint of vanilla appeared on the nose, and the finish lengthened a bit.

Pronounced aromas of chocolate and raisins with a hint of anise. Subtle red fruits on the front of the palate, sour cherry and berry. Good acid balanced the fruit across the mid-palate. At first, it was a little thin at the back end, but after 20-30 minutes, the finish lengthened and some nice, rounded tannins emerged. Nice wine.

Opened and poured at 52 degrees, perfect for a scorching hot August night in the deep South! Love the blast of watermelon and the hint of strawberry on the nose. Silky mouth feel with cherry and a hint of citrus that linger on the palate. Good acidity. Nice balance.

Light on the nose, just a little peach and citrus; good mouth feel for a pinot grigio. More complex on the palate; a little out of balance allowing a touch of bitterness to emerge, but on the whole, a pleasant warm-weather wine.

Very different on the nose than on the palate. Nose was faint and slightly sour, this really shined on the palate. Great mouth feel, red fruits at the front and a good finish. Balanced and elegant.

When you open a 50-year-old bottle of wine, you never know what you're going to get, especially when you've only had the bottle for 5 years yourself, so you can't be sure of its provenance. So it is that much more exciting when it works out. The cork was the tiniest bit soft, but came out easily and in one piece. There was a slight worrisome funk on the nose at first, but that was the only issue with this wine. I was planning to decant but first poured a small taste directly into a glass to check the color. It was perfect--deep purple; no fading and no browning at the edges. After 5 minutes or so, the age-funk faded, and the raisin-chocolate that I so adore in traditionally-made amarones emerged. The first taste showed a little tight and a little peppery, but was still so much more approachable than I had expected that I made the decision not to decant but simply to give it a little time in the open bottle before pouring. After 30 minutes, I poured for Chef Adolfo, some for his staff, and a glass for myself. I had not told the Chef what I was pouring, but let him taste it first. When I told him it was older that he was, he was astounded. It had weight, balance and great length and seemed to have structure that would have stood up to aging another decade or more. It was vibrant--not tired at all--and showed no signs that it had spent half a century in a bottle. The wine showed flavors of cherry and plum, and the tannins were, as you might expect, soft and elegant. This was a true joy.

Wonderfully balanced throughout the palate; great length. Has structure for aging at least 5-10 more years.

I am so pleased to be seeing these good reviews for this wine. For those who have some of these bottles, I wanted to let you know what the producer said about drinkability when I acquired mine. I met Maria-Téresa Mascarello at the winery--my wife and I were there in October 2006 for a tasting. The winery had almost sold out of the 2001, but Maria-Teresa agreed to sell us several bottles--but only after making me promise that I would not drink them before 2011. I have done as I promised, and will hold off for another year until next fall/winter. As good as it seems from the tasting notes I've read, I imagine it's going to be truly spectacular as it continues to age.

Overwhelming impression was balance. Love the earth on the nose. Subtle and elegant at the front of the palate with just enough acid to wake the palate. Lovely fruit, not overwhelming, in midpalate. Nice finish.
