Monthly Tasting at Wine Wizards (Wine Wizards Stockton): Classic is the right descriptor. Good aromatics, good weight and acid balance, very slightly sweet at a background level. The finish was long and slightly sweet. Lovely wine at a decent price.

Bigger, more full-bodied version of Cab Franc. Medium ruby. Approachable but still-youthful tannin that need a bit of time to resolve. Dark berries and herbs. Noticeable alcohol.

Pietros: Wines where the oak is the dominant character are less appealing to me. This is one of those wines. I think under that layer of oak is an appealing wine. The balance is certainly good. I am not scoring this.
  • Woodbridge Brad commented:

7/30/21, 4:15 PM - Bravium is part of Trinchero Family Wines (Sutter Home), like many of these wines/brands the pressure to have obvious oak is high from the marketing staff and wine writers.I just tasted Escarpment from NZ similar pricing and fair more finesse. Thanks for your kind words.

2 Coravin pours to taste and have with dinner. Same day purchase, paid ~$20 on sale, was curious to try. 15.5% ABV on label. This is a pretty generous and full bodied wine. Not well structured for aging but ripe and fruit forward. It drank pretty well with grilled teriyaki pork tenderloin. But alone it was noticeably hot while also showing a game meat and black fruit profile with light florals and pepper spice. This is not really my style of wine. It was soft and not very tannic and not too bright with acidity. Seems like a ripe modern styled Grenache/Syrah blend that would be good as an everyday meal wine but with noticeably high alcohol. I was hoping to recommend this to some friends and clients as a good wine at a great price but I think I will hold off after tasting the wine.

Monthly Tasting at Wine Wizards (Wine Wizards Stockton): Have bought this blend in previous years and this vintage is similar, a great value at $12. Spicy and complex, with ample acidity a weeknight red, that will work with anything. Will improve with time but nice now. It is an blend: 40% Barbera di Monferrato, 25% Barbera d’Asti Cappellatta, 25% Barbera d’Asti, 10% Bonarda (Charbono). Great value

Big inky varietal classic Petite Sirah, young and full of fruit with a hint of smoke and oak. Developed enough to start drinking the tannins are soft, the texture fleshy, the acid balanced and the finish dry with lingering fruit. This the classic style of Lodi PS, a natural fruit focused wine that does it without excess oak, residual sugar or mega red. Lovely

Cellar Triage Tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon; 4/14/2019-4/15/2019 (Home): Pulled for ullage, 1/4 inch below the neck. I am tasting this because I need some space in the cellar (I also have more). Very vital with no age showing in color, solid nose and structure. This the third of seven bottles I pulled because of ullage, so far three have been excellent and two into a dj for vinegar.

We made some nice wines in those days.

Cellar Triage Tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon; 4/14/2019-4/15/2019 (Home): Going through my cellar looking at wines that the ullage is starting to creep out of the neck, this was one. About a 1/4 inch out of the neck the cork was tired but extracted in one piece.
Still garnet not tawny, still has muscle and personality. Definitely aged but also definitely not OTH. Hints of brett that blew off, wish we made wines like this now 12.5% alcohol. Tons of character and life.

1985 Vichon Cabernet Sauvignon Vichon Napa Valley
Cellar Triage Tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon; 4/14/2019-4/15/2019 (Home): Making room in the cellar, have hung on to this for sentimental reasons, it is from the period of George Vierra and John McCay running the winery. The wine has both Fay and Volker Eisile vineyard Cabernet as part of the blend and the pedigree is excellent. Anyway the ullage was creeping out of the neck, so I half expected to taste it and consign the balance to vinegar stack, wrong!

Yes, it is aged but the color is more garnet than tawny and the Cabernet flavors true and correct. Still has good structure and acid balance. Only 13%. More than a memento it is quite nice and has nice personality that lives iup to its heritage. No score but it is very nice. Think 93+
  • Woodbridge Brad commented:

Very light color, gentle lemon citrus character that is very enticing. It is a light supple wine that is fleshing out. This wine needs more time in the bottle adding 3-4 years to my aging window and I will not tap into it for a year at least. (Please note: don't serve too chilled or it almost becomes lemon water, far better at just below room temp)

Perfect developed Napa Valley Cabernet in the old school (balanced not an overripe FB). Far better than the lunch, but I was not buying. Really a pleasure. Not sure I would buy it for beyond five years but right now it is lovely.
  • Woodbridge Brad commented:

2/1/19, 9:38 AM - First, this was at a Rabobank wine industry presentation and Heitz had donated the wine for the lunch, so I believe the cellaring would be optimal. Second, I am always looking for 2011's to hold for a granddaughters 21st. I would not bet on this wine for that as it is so well developed now I can see five years but not ten plus. I am sure it would interesting then but ... only that.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting of the 2016 Vintage (Metreon San Francisco): Big chewy unresolved wine. Nice nose but too much tannin for me. No score
  • Woodbridge Brad commented:

1/28/19, 9:11 AM - I think that the excess tannin will persist beyond the development peak of this wine, it will always be too tannic and edgy. I distinguish between hard tannins and the structural tannins, one (structural) ages out and adds depth the hard tannins do not condense as fast and for the most part stay edgy and hard. This wine had plenty of hard tannins.

Monthly Tasting at Wine Wizards (Wine Wizards Stockton): Okay at $35 a bottle and marketed as a Vin de France Rouge you expect maybe a "Super Corsican" experimental wine and maybe that was the intent but it fell somewhat flat for me. KL described it a a Corsican "beaujolais" but it was herbal and weedy rather than fruit, drinkable but confusing. I guess it takes a lot of Gaul to make a $35 Vin de France.

Actually there appears to be the usual mark up by KL. This wine is sell in EU for 23 Euro ($27). The "Super Corsican" is because of the usual laws that hamper change.

  • Woodbridge Brad commented:

6/14/18, 9:43 PM - This was at my wine merchants tasting, based upon my 40+ years of winemaking and drinking experience if there is one bottle like this there will be more. Low SO2 and a slight amout of RS is an invitation for brett like this to happen. The price is Kermit Lynch, which can be a bit pumped up for the SF Bay area market. This is not a bad wine per se but it is so light I have a hard time believing the 70% Cabernet is right. More like 100% Sangiovese. Yes, it is overpriced by $12 (2X) for what it is, it drinks like a really good everyday Chianti. Light red color, sour cherry nose, good acid balance, mild structure, and a lingering acid finish with 12.5% alcohol. Judged as that it is very nice but at $23 move on. The nose is all Pinot and very intense, in the mouth the acid is adequate but the tannin is very soften and the linger is all Pinot flavors and acid. Overall a lovely wine. I have always thought Bill's CF was his best wine. We tasted (drank) this before lunch today, it was bottled 3 weeks ago. Still quite spicy and maybe a bit oak focused, color is quite sound but not inky. In the mouth the tannins are quite resolved and there is still good acid, the ample fruit is more of the sour berry type accented by a dose of spicy smoke. Long warm finish and lingering barrel notes. Definitely at or maybe a tiny bit past it's aging point and it is my last bottle. 2012 La Basia Valtènesi Groppello
This gem from Italy , north of Verona ( thanks Brad!) is light, unique and delicious. The Groppello, Barbera, Sangiovese blend shows sunshine, stone , and a dash of pomegranate. Yes- it is a bit difficult to describe but easy to enjoy.

A 50:50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, the Grenache seems to be dominating. The adequate slightly orange red color does not betray its age and the nose although not overpowering is that of a lovely moderately aged Grenache with dried orange peel and garrigue. Very soft in the mouth, the 14% alcohol shows and the acid and tannin are quite subdued. Lovely

Slightly green and rough around the edges it is still a very enjoyable red. Reasonable fruit and development, nice value at $10.

Not bad just overdone and very hot with alcohol. Very dark color, very ripe pruney nose with lots of oak. 58% Mourvedre, 38% Grenache, 4%CN. This is another over the top wine. Would prefer to see something more subtle.

8/12/14, 11:43 AM - Yes, this was a prerelease sample at a panel tasting. Just one caution, my personal taste does not run too very over ripe and intensely oaky wines. This was a very well made wine but very intense and ripe and for me would overwhelm most food.

Nice spice, and good acid. Very typical but not the most expressive vintage of this wine I have had. They used an agglomerated cork that is imparting almost slight cork taint and I think dulling the wine. Ordered a few bottles anyway hoping that this sample was slightly flawed.

6/13/13, 7:50 PM - Got my order the first bottle was excellent, tasted against two inexpensive Chiantis and it shined on the aromatics and softness. Bring on the grilled fish.
