Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark red core, minimal lightening at rim. Intense nose of ripe dark cherries, cassis, grilled meat and cedar immediately on opening. The hint of alcoholic heat on the nose a few years ago is gone. Full-bodied, lush, very concentrated ripe fruit and silky palate-coating intensity. Modern with some Napa-sequel qualities but definitely a left bank Bordeaux. Long finish with no fading on the back palate. No real complexity yet but fair acidity and plenty of tannin to age for many years. Hard to resist right now. A great match with a big honkin' reverse-sear Flannery Jorge steak finished on the grill. Outstanding.

Cellared since release. Pale yellow/gold. More expressive and open thavthe last bottle 18 months ago. Citrus, apple, spice, floral and yeasty/ready notes on the nose. Great depth and power, ripe yellow fruits, excellent minerally acidty, well balanced. Has developed beautifully in the last couple years but I expect even more complexity over time. Excellent-outstanding.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Not much change since the last bottle 6 months ago. Dark red core, minimal lightening at rim. Plum, raisin, smoke, a hint of VA. Full body, ripe/over-ripe, huge extraction, adequate balancing acidity - not flabby but not focused either, moderate tannins, medium-long finish. Some may love the hugeness and ripeness but my palate has shifted away from this style. Maybe good, but I didn’t go back for a second glass.

After a night in the fridge, the remainder was showing alcoholic heat, a burnt character, and raisins. Not good, and down the drain with the rest of it. Feh.

Pop-n-pour towards the end of the evening, after decanted bottles of 2005 Screaming Eagle and 2013 MacDonald. Perfect cork and fill. Dark red color, minimal lightening at the rim. Nose a little reserved at first but comes forth over an hour to show a very nice mix of cassis, dark berries, earth. Medium-full body, palate follows the nose, excellent balance, medium long finish. Stylistically very different from the Screagle and MacDonald, showing more classic, less modern. Would likely have benefited from a 1-2 hour decant as it was still improving at the end of the night. Should continue to drink well for another decade or two. All 6 of us ranked this between the other 2 cabs. Excellent.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Double decanted 6 hours before serving, followed over another 4 hours. Dark red/purple to rim. Intense nose of ripe dark fruits with a touch of alcoholic heat. Full bodied, ripe fruit. Not as dense or round or as deep and intense as the 2014 we drank last week, and it lacks the balance of that bottle, showing a touch of alcohol and oak. Perhaps it suffered in comparison to the perfectly balanced 2005 Screaming Eagle served with it. All 6 ranked this behind the Screagle and a pop-n-pour bottle of 2001 Ridge Monte Bello opened nearer the end of the evening. A glass put aside until the end of the evening did show better. I suspect this will be better integrated in 5-10 years. For now it warrants a very good-excellent.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Double decanted 2 hours before serving. Dark red to rim. Intense enveloping nose of cassis, dark berries, with a nice hint of spice and mint. Full bodied, rich ripe complex fruit melange follows the nose, perfect balance, nothing sticks out x rather like an orchestra in perfect harmony. Long finish. Drinking beautifully now, should go another decade or more. WOTN for all 6 of us. Outstanding.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Light gold. Tropical fruit on the nose, full body, rich ripe fruit, oak still a little too obvious, medium long finish. Will oak integrate with more time? There’s still plenty of fruit. Will hold the only other bottle another 5-10 years. For now, very good, perhaps excellent for an oakophile.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark purple to rim. A massive wall of raspberry and savory aromas blast forth from the glass right from the get-go. Dense mouthful of palate-coating ripe raspberries, enough acidity to hold flabbiness at bay, resolved tannins, long finish. A wild ride, excellent if this is your jam.

Opens in the glass quickly after pop-n-pour to show great mix of cherries, red berries, moist earth, mushrooms/truffle. Medium-full body, great balance, fresh ripe fruit, beautifully balanced with acid and subtle tannins. Moderate tertiary. Just as good after the next day after a night in the fridge. Drinking really well and should continue to do so for another decade. Excellent.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Pop and pour. Dark red to rim. A bit closed and acidic at first, it opens over an hour to a forward nose of red fruits, smoked meats, moist earth, hints of olive. Medium-full bodied, ripe fruit, well-balanced with a fresh, crisp palate feel. Medium finish. Drinking well now, expect more with another 5 years in the cellar. Excellent.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Rich, ripe dark berry fruits right out of the gate. Full body, very ripe fruit, lush palate feel, just enough acid and tannin to keep it from being flabby, nice finish. Hasn’t really developed any complexity or evolved much since the last bottle opened in 2008 other than the tannins mellowing and the oak receding. Expect it to hold another decade. Classic ripe Napa cab, went great with burgers at the beach. Excellent-outstanding, but does remind that Napa does not turn into Bordeaux with age.

Every bottle of this secondary market purchase in 2019 has been consistent. Black mold on top of cork but remainder of cork pristine, fill into neck like prior bottles suggesting excellent storage.

Medium ruby with some bricking at rim. Takes about an hour to open up after pop and pour, showing a complex nose of red fruits, leather, moist earth, tea. Medium body, palate follows the nose, nice sweet aged complexity, excellent balance. Still some tannins but no harshness on a medium-long finish combined with plenty of fruit suggest this has years of good drinking ahead of it. Excellent-Outstanding. Nearing the end of my stash on this with only one bottle left. Will be sad to see it go.

Purchased in 2020, perfect cork and fill. Dark red to rim. Cassis, red fruits, tobacco on the nose with a mild-moderate green streak adding interest. Nose opens up and palate becomes more defined over 60-90 minutes. Medium-full body, crisp ripe fruit, good balance, moderate but not intrusive tannins, some tertiary complexity developing. Still on the upswing. Excellent.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Pale yellow/gold. Takes about an hour to open up. Citrus, hints of bread/toast. Seems shut down, nice balance, but not showing as much as on release. Give it 5 years?

Edited to add that the last 1/3 of the bottle, left in the fridge with a stopper overnight, showed much better the next day. Distinct apple and citrus, hints of fresh baked bread, good concentration and balance, strong finish. Excellent. A pleasant surprise, I’d still leave them alone 5 years.

Second bottle of a case purchased in 2007, perfect cork and fill. Dark red core, slightly lighter at rim. Given an hour of air, the nose shows an intense mix of cassis, dark berries, tobacco, cedar, clean moist earth and some beginning mature complexity. Full body, great concentration and balance, ripe fruit offset by a hint of vegetal green. Long finish. Showing a bit more maturity and actually more enjoyable than bottles I’ve cellared since release. I would expect further improvement and decades of great drinking ahead. Outstanding.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Impenetrably dark red to rim. Doesn’t show that much on the nose with pop and pour. After 3-4 hours dark ripe fruits, licorice, and mocha show up. No real complexity or earthiness at this point, and no real change through the evening or the next day after a night in the fridge. Very full-bodied, tons of ripe fruit, good balancing acidity, prominent tannins, a bit of alcohiheat on the back palate, long finish. Unchanged on day 2 other than tannins less prominent. Opened too soon to show any real Bordeaux typicity, give it another 5-10 years. Excellent potential, sorry I opened it now.

Cellared since release, this was the screw capped version. Perfect fill. Dark red with a little lightening at therim. Cherry, cassis, strawberry, on the nose. Medium body, good balance, some earthy complexity, fresh fruit, tannins mellow and well-integrated, medium-long finish. This screw-capped wine showed it can develop with age. This is drinking really well now and will likely do so for another decade or more.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark red to rim. Takes about 90 minutes to open up, showing a really nice nose of cherry, moist earth, garrigue. Some additional leather and floral notes show up after another hour or two. Medium-full body, excellent balance, ripe fruit with a bit of contrasting crisp green, tannins present but not intrusive, medium finish. Excellent. Drinking really well now but not yet showing full maturity. Added complexity expected in another 5-10 years.

Auction purchase 2020. Opened on our 33rd anniversary. Fill into neck, cork soaked 1/8 way up, came out easily. Dark red core, hint of bricking at rim. Unlike the last bottle from this lot that had an immediately beautiful nose, this shows a bit of VA or band-aidy Brett on opening. That blows off over an hour or two, after which a richly complex nose of cassis, plum, iron, leather, clean moist earth, and a bit of a green streak to add interest comes to the fore. Medium body, beautifully balanced, great mix of crisp and complex fruit, a bit of green, umami, still enough tannin to go another decade, medium finish. Drinking beautifully and should continue to do so for another decade or more, great old school Bordeaux. Matched beautifully to a reverse-sear ribeye finished on the grill. Excellent.
