Edit: 55 was a mistake, not sure what happened. Thank goodness we have another bottle of this as it was so smooth. We did aerate for about an hour (before I read others notes) and I’m glad we did. Not a wine connoisseur but I do love a nice red and this one hit the spot with my ribeye.

Opened a bottle, killed a baby. What strikes me is how well this drinks young. The fruit took about 15 minutes to start coming out and then it seemed to be a race as both it and the oak built for at least an hour. Normally I like my Italians with more age, this drank surprisingly well young, with an initial burst of what I'd almost call blue fruits, settling into a lighter sweeter red fruit style.

Decanted 90 minutes and enjoyed over the next 2 hours. I so very much enjoy this wine. It is ripe, rich and full bodied for a Felsina, but very enjoyable. Feels more like a really good Brunello. I hope the 2015 is as good (or better) with time, but this is actually drinking better than the 2006 right now if I remember properly. A

That’s a big burst of flavor! Moving faster along the aging spectrum than first anticipated, this offering is absolutely delicious if you’re in the mood for something big and brash. Black currants, black plums, black raspberries and every kind of black fruit you can envision at the front end, with gentle, yet persistent, tannins at the back. Cassis, thyme and coal tar in the finish. This should continue to develop for the next five years and drink well for a decade — if you can keep your hands off of it. Outstanding, if you’re looking for a big wine to serve with slow-cooked Christmas rib roast.

Open on 12/28 and had a glass, then put a vacu-vin on it. Took it with me to NC for NYE celebrations with friends and finished the bottle on 12/30. It's not a bad wine, it's a good wine to have with non-wine drinkers. A crowd pleaser, but not a serious wine. I'm coming around to the Total Wine formula of pushing certain bottles/producers on you at every given sales stage. Look, I get it, and I will continue to buy a few bottles per year, especially when it goes on double sale. In my area (DE/NJ) it's listed at $24.99, but they lower the price on it, plus coupons you can get it for around $17-18. At that price, I will buy a few and open with company.
  • Yondan commented:

1/1/18, 11:08 PM - Sean, you were spot on with this wine and your prospective on Total Wine. Total Wine is not necessarily the best price on any wine. You should however take their wine classes as they could be very informative. I would welcome the opportunity to share wine knowledge and experiences that I had with you, outside of cellar tracker. 2013 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
I am being told more of a Margaux style, and I don't see that at all. THis is big, there is lots of fruit in the mid, with some oak bringing up the back structure. It's big and broad shoulder, with a soft lush palate. SO maybe the Kathryn Hall is supposed to be the Margaux, not this wine, which is the basic Napa, which is the big and broad shouldered. This is a powerhouse.

Aerated with a Vinturi and decanted for one hour. Nose of blackberry, currant, mocha and graphite. Black fruit, mocha and a hint of spice on the palate. Leads to a medium to long finish. Full bodied. Very pure. Served with beef stew.
  • Yondan commented:

4/9/17, 2:12 PM - Hoservin, I recommend that you do not use a Vinturi on any wine older than 3 years. I was told that the vinturi can make a young wine taste like an older wine and that if you use it on a older wine, it mite mute the flavors..

After a 1hr decant which produce a fair amount of sediment this bottle was singing, gobs of dark cherry, dark currants, dark plum, dark chocolate, the key word here is dark, the finish was long smooth and integrated with hints of sweet vanilla oak. Paired perfectly with marinated lamb chops, based on this bottle unlikely to improve but should last for several more years in a cool environment.

Underwhelming, especially for the price, most likely because too young. I've had prior vintages and was expecting something good from the 2013 of this wine. After an hour of decanting, tannins were still too intrusive with pronounced bitterness. Acidity is too low, to my taste, almost nonexistent. Mid-palate is yet too weak but could put more flesh with age. Overall, unbalanced and disappointing even if an easy drinker. Rating 91 for potential, more like NR right now.
  • Yondan commented:

9/24/16, 10:19 PM - It doesn't seem appropriate to rate a wine 91 points after stating so many undesirable characteristics. After commentary descriptors like " underwhelming, tannins too obtrusive, pronounced bitterness, acidity too low almost non existent, overall unbalanced and disappointing" it would seem that a rating between 65 and 75 would be more appropriate. If we start rating wines for potential then the rating is meaningless for the wine at the actual tasting.

  • Yondan commented:

9/26/16, 8:25 AM - No disrespect intended, but wine should be rated and reviewed at the time of tasting and the score should not be based on an assumption of improvement with age. . In my opinion you should have rated this wine between 70 and 80 and stipulate that you believe it can reach 91 with a few more years in the bottle.
Many of us use this program to help guide us in decisions about when to open a bottle and what to purchase. Negative tasting notes with a high rating is a contradiction. I hope you understand. Thank you.

  • Yondan commented:

9/4/16, 10:16 PM - Although I have not yet tasted this wine, I tasted other Keenan from this vintage. Keenan is typically exceptionally good, I think 2011 was a bad year for them. My concern is this review does not seem to warrant an 87 score if the wine was one dimensional, flabby and lacking structure.
