2010 Panther Creek Pinot Noir Winemaker's Cuvée Willamette Valley

For $13 this is a decent Oregon Pinot Noir and exactly what I would expect at that price point. I don't believe the bottles I've tasted are flawed, the more "raw" Oregonian characteristics present here just may not be for everyone. If you like your pinots more earthy, smoky, savory, then this is not a bad everyday wine ... especially for the price.

Good but not great. Retailers (Wine Library in this case) are touting RP's 92 rating on this wine, but it may already be past it's prime. He suggested a 2-3 year window, which it is now past. Curious that a blend of 66% Monastrell, 19% Garnacha and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon (aged for one year in both new and 2-year-old French oak) can't age longer than that, but this was not special. That said this is a $15 bottle, so no need to trash it, but I have been enjoying other similarly priced Spanish blends - selling at the same price point - more than this.

Pretty sure the drinking window extends from the review date. Not to say that the wine is not past it's very early possible prime as I have not had it.

2006 Azienda Giribaldi Barolo Nebbiolo

Aerated for 3 hours, followed over 2 days with consistent results. The only other review here describes the wine as tannic, dry, bitter, etc. In other words, all things Barolo/Nebbiolo -at least for those new to the grape/region. That some outfit called winepleasures, one of the internetz's myriad self-appointed wine authorities, rates this as 75 does as much harm to the wine/winery/region as it does to the notion of winepleasures being a legitimate (read: qualified) business/authority. Yes, this is ripe, and certainly more modern than traditional, but it's a solid effort for the vintage and maintains average balance throughout. Of all the 2006 Barolo I've tasted, I'd say this rests somewhere right near the middle of the pack. The 2007 effort was even better (not just drinking better, earlier, as many '07's wil, but with better fruit quality), buoyed by a river of fresh acidity atop the rich, ripe fruits, but that's another entry. I'll probably get criticized for saying this, but it had to be said, there are simply too many people/groups/blogs, etc, parading as (qualified) professionals and/or authorities. Drink thru 2022

edit: a great example of why points don't work

2/1/12, 1:49 PM - Wine Spectator gave it a 91 on November 15th apparently. Just FYI.
