A lovely wine, especially after an hour. Well balanced, “complete” and a touch of sweetness.

Smells of Burgundian dust and dark red (blue) fruit – thicker.
Tastes of rounded forward black cherry fruit and earth; lots to unwind, but powerful and confident now. Tannin still present and good acidity. Lots going on and lovely - “Bigger and fuller” than the 2015.

Medium-full bodied

A delicious wine (classic deep red fruit & earth) with lots to unpack and discover.

Medium-full bodied

This wine coats the mouth beautifully with confident and complex dark red and purple fruit. This will please a new world palate.

Smells of elegant red fruit over alluring darkness (earth)
Tastes of increasingly balanced dark red fruit.

Medium-full bodied

This wine is elegant, proper, and reserved. It takes time for it to come out of its shell, but its traditional confidence cannot be ignored. A safe choice for the Old Guard.

Tastes of pointed raspberry fruit, a touch of raisin, earth, and with barrel texture/grit

Smells of graphite and hidden concentrated dark red fruit
Tastes of lively cherry fruit + raspberry over expected background earth.

Full bodied

This wine is very approachable and dynamic with confident convincing fruit. “Fun” and satisfying Nebbiolo.

Tastes of tart bramble fruit (strawberries) with high acidity

After 90 minutes:
Smells of faint red fruit and earthy mildew
Tastes of dark scratchy earth and light red fruit (raspberries)

Medium bodied

This is a very nice production, offering a more feminine side than the 2015, 2016, & 2017 Hardscrabble offerings. A Burgundian character to the palate with plenty of acid.

This wine played tricks on us, shape shifting between a beautiful balance of fruit, earth, and oak, to an overpowering sense of licking the oak barrel. It will be interesting to try another bottle in a few months.

Smells of beautiful red Burgundian fruit, cold stones, and complex earth
Tastes of dark red and black fruit, cassis, and dense cold vines

After 90 minutes:
Smells of deeper Burgundian fruit, iron, minerals, and sweet dark fruit
Tastes of concentrated dark fruit surrounding knots of brambles

Medium-full bodied

This is an excellent offering, with lots of aging potential. We were moved by the Burgundian nose and Bordeaux palate. Stronger and more developed than it was 6 months ago.

Smell slightly stewed fruits, black currants, sweet purple fruit, & tobacco
Tastes of medium red fruits, leather, and faint touch of green peppercorn

Medium-full bodied

After 1 Hour
Smells of concentrated dark black fruit
Tastes of evolving dark red mowing towards black fruit over textured leather; slightly hollow on the mid palate, but mouth coating and lingering.

Drinking nicely after 75 minutes of air.

This has been by far the best, most confident bottle yet. It is not entirely cohesive, but it has layers of convincing dark fruit that answer your call for a solid good left bank Bordeaux.

Tastes of dark red and black fruit with tangy earth
Moderate chalky tannin that reverberates on the gums

After 80 minutes:
Smells of perfume and sweet plum
Tastes of sappy forward wild fruit and resin

This is an interesting and enjoyable wine; powerful and with grip, but still wild. Will be interesting in several years.

Light-moderate tannin on the gums; swirling tape

Smells of bright red brooding fruit and star anise
Tastes of elegant dark red fruit over a smooth textured earth with a hint of bitterness on the finish

This is a lovely elegant, Burgundy-like wine, with concise red fruit and earth; delightful.

Tastes of confident, straightforward, dark red fruits and stewed blueberries.

This is a lovely claret with convincing, but not overpowering fruit; a perfect Virginia weekday wine.

Tastes of lemon, sour grapefruit/green apple, and a touch of orange with good minerality
Moderate & consistent acidity

After 45 minutes:
Smells of lemon and faintly burnt match
Tastes of balanced lemon and grapefruit cream supported by proper core minerality.

This hits its stride at 45 minutes and is a solid effort. Not overly complex, but refreshing, correct, reliable and confident.

Smells of dark brooding fruit and stagnate water
Tastes of earth, bitter branches, chocolate, and muted black fruit

After 1 Hour:
Smells of dark red fruit and sweet water.
Tastes of balanced red fruits - strawberry and darker -, earth, and a touch of eucalyptus.

It finds a good rhythm after 1 hour, showing pleasing fruit that takes a back seat to convincing minerality and earth.

Medium+ tannin on gums (above teeth) and center of tongue with subtle grains

Medium+ bodied

After 50 Minutes:
Smells of sweet soft cherry and vanilla
Tastes of rich dark cherry and earth; very smooth with coating sweet fruit

This is surprisingly approachable at the open, but it improves with time. It shows nice balance and confidence.

Medium tannin on gums over teeth with light grains

Medium-full bodied

After 50 Minutes:
Smells of stagnate water lingering over hidden fruit
Tastes of evolving - dancing - light red fruit with supportive concentrated core of wood and earth.

Overall a decent wine, but it feels conflicted. It needs 45 minutes of air to find a rhythm

Smells of sweet black and dark red fruit
Tastes of concentrated textured dark cherry & raspberry over a wood forward backbone; astringent
Heavy paint-like grainy tannin on the gums

Full bodied.

After 75 Minutes:
Smells of medicinal aromas over red fruit
Tastes of evolving, ever moving cherry fruit and astringent leather.

This needs another 10 years as it is heavily wrapped up, but you can taste the coiled layers of fruit and earth - it will be fun to follow.

Tastes of dark cherry over compact layers of smoked wood; slightly bitter finish
Chalky grainy tannin on the gums that linger

Medium + bodied

After 75 Minutes:
Smells of confident dark red fruit
Tastes of beautifully balanced dark cherries and rugged earth with a touch of allspice.

This is drinking very well after 45 minutes and has proven to be an excellent mid range choice. Lighter than some Barolos, but it is a classic and successful expression of Nebbiolo

Medium bodied.

An solid effort and drinking well after 60 minutes of air. It is confident and masculine, but a touch light on fruit over the palate.

Smells of dark black jam and concentrated fruits, leather, and herbs
Tastes of dark red fruits over scratchy wood; chocolate/cocoa

Medium-full bodied

After 1 Hour
Smells of energetic soft red fruit over a dark core
Tastes of light stewed strawberries with scratchy earth; a cranky bitterness that hasn't settled; but elements of potential excellence are present

Reverberating fine-grained tannin on the gums.

Needs 4-5 hours in the decanter.

Tastes of untamed cherry and rough oak
Fine grained moderate tannin on the front gums

Medium+ bodied.

After 1 hour:
Smells of precise light red fruit with a touch of menthol that almost has texture
Tastes of elegant balanced cherry with a supportive dark earth undertone.

This is a wonderful village Chambolle at a very reasonable price. The aromas at the open are classically alluring and the wine finds its own confidently after 30 minutes of air. You can ask for nothing more in at the village level.

Tastes of light crunchy sweet fruit; plums and dark cherry; some earthy bramble.

Slightly grainy modest tannin on the gums

After 90 minutes:
Smells of dates, earth, and a touch of smoke
Tastes of bright dark red cherry with a touch of menthol

This is approachable at the open with slightly unfocused bright forward red fruit with a lingering darkness that evolves to add complexity.

Firm high acidity with fruit taking a back seat; very fresh

This is fairly lean, but it's refreshing and correct; a nice pairing for shellfish; reliable and precise.

Tastes of light red and bramble fruits with an undertone of scratchy bark
Moderate tannin on the gums - fine grained

After 90 minutes:
Smells of plums, sweet black fruit, and vanilla
Tastes of spice, tobacco, & wild dark red fruit.

This is a very compelling left bank effort. It is still evolving quite a bit and will be a pleasure to follow. Maybe a touch lighter at present than expected.

Smells of damp dark earth
Tastes of light cherry and dirt with an astringent burn
Big chalky tannin that first hits the gums and then lingers heavily on the back of the tongue
Full bodied

After 1 hour (decanted):
Smells of black cherry, almost plums, humus earth, and a touch of menthol
Tastes of coiled dense red fruit, earth, and bitter chocolate (cocoa powder) with great length

After 2.5 hours (decanted):
Smells of dark brooding fruit and animal earth
Tastes of lean dark cherry fruit, chocolate, and wood

After 4 hours (decanted):
Smells of rich complex black fruit, earth, and licorice
Tastes of ripe cherries, cocoa powder, savage earth

This wine needs many more years to rest in the cellar, but it is a stellar, compelling release. It really started to find its stride at the 5th hour of open air, showing all those beautiful, rugged complexities of dark red fruit and animal earth that we love from Conterno.

Tastes of lemon, grapefruit, and minerals
High sharp horizontal acid

This wine is compelling and it will be fun to watch it evolve. It is fruit forward, but supported by a balanced minerality. It feels like it has a lot to say, but that it isn't ready to say it. It is still collecting its thoughts.

This is a big fruit forward wine, but it seems to lack control or precision. The sourness was distracting, but time will help.

Medium-full bodied

This is a very impressive and correct terrior forward Bordeaux. It is a bit lighter and more straight forward than the 2015 Hardscrabble.

Tastes of Evolving and compelling red fruit balanced against an earthy structure. Sour notes have faded.

After 90 minutes:
Smells of stewed fruits and warm spices
Tastes of chewy red layered fruit and earth.

Medium-full bodied.

This is an excellent complex Bordeaux blend that continues to evolve with layered offerings. It needs at least one hour of air.

Medium-full bodied.

This remains a favorite and drinks well after 30 minutes. The 2007 is remarkably reliable.

Tastes of chewy light red fruit, dates, vanilla, oak, and warm spices.

Decanted for 1 hour:
Smells of rich dark red fruit.
Tastes of light smooth red fruit. A touch "flat," but you can tell there are hidden coiled flavors.

Medium-full bodied.

This is approachable now after some air time, but it will need a lot more time before it reaches its potential.

Tastes of black cherries + mineral earth. Strong tannin, but still "light."

45 Minutes:
Smells of dark cherries
Tastes of confident reserved dark red fruit; very balanced

75 Minutes:
Smells of earth, barnyard, and sweet cherries
Tastes of black earth and dark cherry.

This is an excellent wine with a subtle confident brilliance.

Smells of sweet jam and chlorine?
Tastes of developing wild fruit; lots of structure.

This wine is very compelling. It has many complex layers; it is wild, but harmonious.

Smells of Black earth and a touch of mildew

After 3 hours of decanting
Smells of raspberries trapped in a well, sweet & dark
Tastes of chocolate and raisins; light, but coating.

This was a fascinating evolution, but somewhat of a disappointment. We could find pieces of greatness, but they never completely came together. 3 hours of decanting is an absolute must.

Medium bodied. Delightful claret; very well balanced and reliable.
