Red
2006 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve Willamette Valley
decanted for at least 1 hour then it opened up into a delicious pinot, still very young, bright purple with a transparent rim, kirsch, sour cherries on the nose and palate and nice long finish, i think this should cellar well

    3/5/10, 4:50 PM - Wow . . . Burgundy style from a Domaine Serene wine . . . and an '06 to boot? Color me amazed . . . .

White
2008 Abacela Albariño Umpqua Valley
Easily the best bottle of domestic Albarino that I've had and IMHO it would show very welll against some from Spain...
  • paulyp commented:

3/5/10, 3:23 PM - Agreed. They are doing great stuff at Abacela. This is one of my favorite white wines produced in the state. We get it year in and year out. Their reds are nice but this Albarino steals the show for me.

Red
2008 Ayres Vineyard Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
This is very, very good. Good value for $25/btl. Opened for about 2.5 hours but not decanted. Very earthy, some dark fruit, some smokiness. Crisp acidity and a slightly drying lengthy finish.

3/4/10, 11:04 AM - At the winery in January and tasted through the whole 2008 lineup. They were wonderful across the board and good values. Really enjoy this producer. Very nice folks as well.

My first Thomas and I am impressed. Drank over about 4 hours. At first a bit tight, but this opened up with an hour or two of air (not decanted). Raspberry and a bright, creamy strawberry aspect. Also a bit of a smoky quality. This will continue to evolve. Drink/hold.

This is a pretty wine - light, but also flavorful. I saw the word "delicate" used in several prior notes and it is quite fitting. 91+-92pts.

3/4/10, 10:59 AM - Good to see some of the positive recent notes on this wine. Bought a half case and opened one at Thanksgiving and it was locked down tighter than a drum. Will probably not touch another one till late 2010 and will make sure to give decent decant.

Low depth of color, red rim showing very little signs aggressive maceration. On the nose quite aromatic with a pretty mix of floral red and black fruits, tons of sappy aromas, some background baking spices and minerals. On the palate the wine has medium to high acidity, a super lush and broadmidpalate, a very fine transition into a moderate amount of ripe tannins finish... low ETOH. Good balance between acidity and ripeness of fruit/palate weight... good length, great intensity and good complexity. Shows a lot of finesse for being so sweet and lush on the midpalate, lush texture... expresses its New Worldness very well. I really enjoyed this wine and believe more Oregon/Cali producers should be shooting for something like this as opposed to the phenollically ripe, tank watered, 15% ETOH beasts... bravo! Drinks well now but should improve over the next 1-3 or 2-4 years.

3/2/10, 2:58 PM - Great to hear that the standard bottling is showing so well. Have 2 fo the 04 Reserves but those are agers that I will not be cracking for some time.

Nice blend of red/black fruit and earth/loam, with good length. It's making me miss Seven Springs vineyard...

3/1/10, 10:55 AM - An absolute shame that SI, Bethel Heights, Evesham, etc have lost access to this site. Have not tried the Evening Lands wines yet but will certainly miss the local producers renditions of this fruit.

Lovely wine - was expecting it to be even better though...

3/1/10, 10:51 AM - I have a sense that this wine is on the young side of it's development. I have one but will hold it for at least another year or two.

This was a solid, delicious, enjoyable if typical 2007 Oregon Pinot Noir. Aromatically, pleasing and intriguing...somewhat "stemmy" or "Dujac Light" which is a quality that I have found in many of Mark's 2007's and is certainly a style preference for me but YMMV. Very subtle and appropriate use of oak IMO. In the mouth, balanced, enjoyable, medium-ish in palate weight with a nice if not terribly lengthy finish. Ready to drink now or consume within the next three years although I am not sure cellaring will improve this wine significantly. I think Mark did a great job with his 2007's although they do represent accurately the lighter style of the vintage. This is not the strongest or weakest wine in the 2007 SI lineup but my experience with this vineyard is limited and I was impressed enough to plan on purchasing future vintages without reservation.

2/28/10, 11:09 AM - Your concept of the drinking windows of the 07 SI PN's match up with the winemaker's assessment. At the winery in November. Mark said to drink your 07's while you wait on 05.

Popped and poured. Deep red-garnet color. Soaring nose of Asian spices, red earth, loam, fresh grass and ripe fruit. Complete and still fairly tannic on the palate with ample fruit and a long finish. The wine seemed to close down or fade after 2 hours.

2/28/10, 11:07 AM - This seems like an enigmatic wine. Bummed I only have one. Every time I get to thinking it's ready another note like this comes along and gives me pause . . .

It's probably me but I found it rather plain, nothing to remember or desire

2/28/10, 11:04 AM - Interesting. Had it at the winery last month. The nose jumped out at me first. Very pronounced. The palate was a nice brambly dark raspberry profile.

We had this at my 4/5/08 pinot tasting. It had red cherry, vanilla & clove on the nose with just the cherry and clove coming through on the palate. It had a little bit of tannin…a pretty simple wine.

2/28/10, 11:02 AM - Nice to see this is still holding up. A good wine for the dollar, will have to pick up one of the 08s.
