100% Seyval Blanc. Aromas of zesty, fresh and crisp green apples. Palate is muscular with tiny bubbles dancing from side-to-side with lemon, apple and toasted-almonds. Comes across as barely legal at the moment, but with more than sufficient body to lay-down for more than a quite a few years. We are not about ready to walk away from our Frog Blanc de Blancs, but we are keen to continue sipping this luvly bubbly. Very, very well-done. The wine maker is Peter Hall, who apparently is the "master of Seyval Blanc". According to The Wine Pantry website (http://www.winepantry.co.uk/Breaky-Bottom-Cuvee-Cuvee-Koizumi-Yakumo-10/), this bubble is named after Peter's great-great-uncle the writer Lafcadio Heran, who is also known as Koizumo Yakumo, commemorating his work and marking his death 110 years ago. How do you go from Koizumi Yakumo to Lafcadio Heran to Peter Hall? Have a quick read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lafcadio_Hearn. A touch too expensive, but we think worthy if not for anything than the change of pace...and recognition of what most people said was impossible...the English make excellent wine!

Bottle 4 of 4 Robert Foley Sip 'n Snack Day. Just when we thought Nirvana had been achieved, we slip into this stunner. Perhaps the culmination of Robert Foley. Pure dark purple red. Opaqueness can be a good thing!!! Nose is perfectly balanced after 7 hours breathing. Wow, wow, wow. Soft, rich, full welcoming of cherries on the nose. Slick, salubrious, soft texture on the palate. A Napa-Bordeaux blend baby ready to sip now and for the near future. She is the "keeper". Introduce to Mom, Dad, friends, etc. Her grace, strong personality, confident stride and elegant engagement will make you the King of Her Court with everyone in attendance wishing they were you. Wow, wow, wow! Trenton Roadhouse is rockin' 'n rollin'. Vibrant, greenish-yellow. Almost sparkly. Bouquet of green apples, peach, lemon, lime and toasted almond cream. Palate ir rich, full-bodied, vanilla cream and elegant lushness. Stunning with less than 10,000 bottles produced. Pleased to have a couple more to sip over the next decade. We popped open one of our favourite California Cabernet Sauvignons (blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and a bit of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) to toast the sad and unexpected passing of Blankiet Wine Maker Extraordinaire - Denis Malbec. RIP, Denis...and sip well during the next step in your journey.

Rich purple/brown/red on the eye. Blankiet really knows how to open the door and dare you to jump into the deep end!

Dark, black fruits, coffee and smokiness overwhelms your nose and speaks volumes as to why you MUST decant for at least 5 hours before sipping this Mack Truck.

Palate is overwhelmed with fruit, toasty-oak, silky tannins and happy integration.

We mistakenly let her breathe in the bottle and only felt we had experienced all her glory in hour 8...yup, we are serious. Plan well in advance with this powerful, heavyweight champion...and probably wait another 5 to 10 years before sipping.

Ok-I am going against the crowd. Hit me over the head with empty bottles. First-those people with palates that enjoy a higher toned wine this is perfect for them. The wine is wonderfully balanced with a great finish. Perfectly made for those that want this type of wine. Yes there is a slight dark vein running through the wine. But as prounounced as the gold veins in my gold stocks. Not much!

I like the drier aspects with deep flavors of earth, leather, brush-you get the idea. (Ok-I am going to get it for this remark-but I can take it) kind of like a child ordering a Shirley Temple instead of a dark, rich Cabernet. However everyone has different palates and this may be for you. Here we go again more humor--->maybe they should call this wine Shirley Temple Cabernet Sauvignon. Dave

Dark, gold, straw yellow, a touch murky. Honey, vanilla, toasty, very ripe citrus fruit, oak (6+ months in the barrel) and mucho complex. Stunning balance, nice acidity. Long and mature finish. This is a Nicole Kidman wine of immense stature, full-body, soaring heights and regal confidence. It may hang on a few more years, but no longer than 2017.

This wine defines the concept of a second wine, in the sense of using younger vines not bad crop. Having tried the 2012 Ornellaia recently (too young) this one had a very similar style yet in a lower tone. Still that well made feel, that rightly ripe fruit and well balanced with the oak. A textbook of what a second wine should be, a quality wine made of younger vines. 90 and we would suggest one drinks in a few years.

3 oz. coravin pour at Bottega. Love Pritchard Hill and this did not let me down. This had an incredible nose. This is a BIG, rich wine with big tannins. I drank a Realm single vineyard Pritchard Hill the next day and this was much better. I agree with other reviewers that while this is expensive it can be amazing in a couple of years.
  • BuzzzzOff commented:

4/15/17, 12:21 AM - Thanks for your comment and rating. We recently tasted Continuum at a wine dinner in Hong Kong, and we spent the evening chatting with Carissa Mondavi. Very cool lady! We thought incredible potential in Continuum, and we bought several bottles of every vintage available. We will sip in 5 to 10 years as far too aggressive for our palates at this point. We have little doubt a winner in the making!

  • BuzzzzOff commented:

4/15/17, 8:35 PM - Thanks for your note. No doubt Continuum is a bit pricey, but as you have pointed out, excellent. We have yet, as far as we are aware, stumbled upon any wines from Pritchard Hill. Howell Mountain in abundance...happily we might add. Problem for us is shipping is USD15 to USD20 per bottle for wines we buy directly from California wineries and very few are represented in Hong Kong by merchants, who would bring via reefer. France and other countries in Europe are a fraction of the cost and as good or, in some instances, better than California. Interesting dynamic unfolding when you can buy a case of 6 bottles of an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon led Bordeaux Left Bank blend for the price of one bottle of equally excellent Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Hmmm...

  • BuzzzzOff commented:

4/17/17, 9:42 PM - Hey Rayt. Yup, Hong Kong on and off since 1989. Born in the USA, but pretty much departed after university, albeit did return for law and MBA degrees. We are retired. We grew up on wine in Hong Kong, which was largely Left Bank Bordeaux until early 2000s. Now with 0% income tax we see everything. Continuum is pretty cool. We did not realise it hails from Pritchard Hill...thanks. Yes, very good Bordeaux (of course not 1st Growths) can be had for exceedingly great QPRs. Not as big, fruity and/or alcoholic as Cali Cabs, but elegant, well-made, yummy and now much less expensive. Go for it!

2007 Seña Aconcagua Valley Red Bordeaux Blend

Considered to be one of the top red wines drom Chile. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Carménère (20%), Merlot (12%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (5%) from biodynamically cultivated vineyards, mostly fermented in stainless steel, with 6% of the wine fermented in new oak barrels. Aged for 22 months in new oak barrels. At 96 Parker Points this has been the highest-scoring vintage of Seña.

Very dark, almost black ruby red color. Bold, opulent and quite concentrated nose with aromas of modern new world Bdx-blends: sweet cassis, overripe red fruits, some smoke and a good dose of oak in the form of dark chocolate, sweet spices, mocha and caramel; there are also underlying minty and eucalyptus hints of Chilean Cab. On the palate there is an initial sweet and soft attack, after which the wine turns out to be quite dry, firm and tightly-knit with stern, tannic structure. There are bold, extracted flavors of sweet cassis, juicy red berries, vanilla, some peppermint, a little oaky chocolate and a touch of alcohol. Although the new oak character shows quite much, the fruit is concentrated enough to stay on the fore, keeping the oak well-integrated. The acidity is pretty low, making the wine lack some focus and brightness. Overall the wine feels quite a blockbuster, but even though it is big, it actually shows some balance and sensibility with good tannic structure. The finish is long, powerful and juicy with a lot of emphasis on the sweeter flavors; there are succulent flavors of ripe - almost overripe - dark fruits, sweet milk chocolate, extracted new oak spice, some peppery spice, light minty notes and a hint of alcohol warmth.

This is a big, bold and structured Bordeaux blend that is unmistakably Chilean in character. Out of the many Chilean cult wines I've tasted, this is definitely the most impressive one, yet still not one for my taste; this is just too monolithic, sweet and - above all - overoaked concentration bomb. Having now tasted this, I can understand why so many people swoon over this wine, but I find it hard to get excited over these clumsy monster wines. Perhaps 10-15 more years might help? At 84,90€, I am not going to try it out myself. The wine shows really poor value, as you can get some really impressive classics at half the price. Although an impressive cult wine, Seña feels just really excessively overpriced. At third of the retail price I might consider it worth its value.
  • BuzzzzOff commented:

3/29/17, 7:29 PM - Wow, thanks for your comprehensive note and rating. "clumsy monster wines"...nice description ;-). We definitely agree regarding QPR. Equally, we doubt the 10-15 years might help as, in our limited experience, Seña should be singing around now. Hmm...interesting...

  • BuzzzzOff commented:

3/30/17, 5:53 PM - Very true, forceberry. Would agree with the comments to pre-open or decant an hour early on this bottle. It's a thin Pinot upon first pop n pour. The nose was muted, hints of wild strawberry blooms, and evergreen. The red berry fruit did come out to play more after the second hour, and a bit of rustic herb and a venison meat quality that was quite nice. Not sure this Pinot is worth the price point for me personally. Had been hoping for a bit more. We had with a really fine meal of fresh veggies, fruit, grilled prawns, polenta, and tuscan roasted chicken. Should have been some great pairing, but it missed a bit.
  • BuzzzzOff commented:

7/12/15, 7:23 PM - Thanks for your note and rating. We finally returned home after 70+ days overseas, and we thought our first Kistler Chardonnay of 2016 was in order. Perhaps the longest we ever have gone without a bottle of, from our perspective, one of the world's greatest Chardonnays. Barely legal, toasty-creamy-oak streams from her pores like a boutique bakery around 5am as the croissants and creamy dahlins' prepare for the morning devotees. Purity by definition. We brought to a Boxing Day lunch to sip with traditional "pudding" and French cheese!

Ha, what is French cheese without Yquem? A day without sunshine we said, which brought a smile to everyone's face. This stunning barely legal baby demonstrates the best that can be achieved when the French, non-Kiwi version of Sauvignon Blanc meets the structure of Semillon. Amazing balance between sweetness and acidity that fellow CTer Greg Munyard quite correctly and succinctly calls "lip-licking". It is very near to impossible to say more except we enjoy the citrussy petrol on the nose along with the smooth candy-like expression on the palate. We visited the Chateau a few years ago, we learned how they make it happen and we pay homage to the people who deliver, only when the harvest is perfect, this glorious Sauternes with top-shelf consistency. Sadly, one finds it difficult to venture far afield from THE definition of this type of drop...which ain't inexpensive! Rocking 'n rolling!

On the nose, progressive aromas of cigar box, campfire, spice and later on, some cool meatiness and game. The initial palate was tart cherry and a bit straightforward for the first couple of glasses, but by glass #3, this was picking up weight. Typical Lopez class and elegance. By the 4th glass, the palate also picked up some meatiness of its own. Finishing the bottle the next night, the red fruit had rounded more to strawberry. This still has upside potential. 91+

great wine, had this last night at a friends place
The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, red currant and mineral. The body is medium/full. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

Medium gold in color with muted aromas of lemon, lime, nectarine, hazelnut and wet stone. Full bodied and softly textured and the palate; aforementioned flavors are currently overwhelmed by omnipresent oak and base mineralty. While acidity present keeps this lively; the underwhelming presence of fruit left this hollow and one dimensional. Wish I had waited as I’m inclined to think this will show much better in the future once all elements have fully integrated. Sadly, this was a lone soldier, so I will follow with great interest the observations of the community on this one in the future.

Our friend "insisted" on bringing this to Pierre Gagnaire's Hong Kong restaurant last night...how could we say no!? Neither could Pierre as he joined us for a small sip!

Still barely legal yet luscious and showing subtle hints of toasted brioche, caramel and that ever so desired yeasty nose. Give her another 5 years, and you will be proposing marriage!

Purple ruby slightly bricky color with clearing meniscus. Leather, oak, forest, flowers, red-dark fruits, earthy, warm morrican spices, cologne, truffle. Wonderful complex warm bouquet on nose. Soft smooth tannins. Balanced acidity. Long 90sec finish. Drink again.

Weekly tasting group RWP: Really Special Wines (@ DJ): This bottle was brought by a professional. There was about 1/3 left in the bottle and the Coravin was used. He did not know since how long. In the bouquet rust, but also a high concentration. On the palate chocolate, some celery, ok acidity, oxidized impressions and soft tannin. For me personally a big disappointment! This is not how Sassicaia 2009 is supposed to taste. Was the Coravin not properly used or what? Anyway, no score for the wine.
  • BuzzzzOff commented:

10/21/16, 7:03 PM - Thanks, Zweder and ChristopherB. Ouch! We have had great success with Coravin. However, we usually have half dozen older wines for such purposes. Frankly, we have not even thought of cracking open our 2009 Sassicaia case. We have found Coravin to be marvie with 8+ year old wines from virtually every where. At the moment, we have 2002 Unico, 2006 Ornellai, 2007 Sena, 2008 Blankiet and 2008 Pera Manca. It already has been a couple of months and so far (fingers crossed) all peachy. On the palate youthful and healthy dark berries, beautiful oak, some pleasant sweetness and good acidity. There is some pleasant bell pepper and bitterness. Concentrated and round as well. Overall a really beautiful and healthy, still youthful wine with plenty of room for the future, 93+

Wow... I had this about 2 years ago and it was not ready to drink. However, a few years of additional cellar aging and about 1 hour in the decanter had this wine singing and me wanting more. Poured from a 375ml bottle, the wine was medium bodied with red cassis, mineral, violets, and even a touch of gardenia flowers. A more feminine wine, but don't let that word fool you. It is dynamite wrapped in velvet.
  • BuzzzzOff commented:

6/18/15, 6:43 PM - Thanks. Nice! We like the "dynamite wrapped in velvet" description. We sipped a bottle last year, and we thought not quite ready. With this description, we just might sip again this year, albeit with only one bottle left in the cellar, we may let it lay down for another decade as we sip our Bordeaux 2007s. Thoughts?

  • BuzzzzOff commented:

6/18/15, 10:35 PM - Yes, we plan to do so with the 2007 Bordeaux. Thanks. What about the 2005 Giscours? Give it a few more years in the Cellar?

  • BuzzzzOff commented:

6/19/15, 6:12 AM - Agreed, particularly Left Bank. We like the 10 to 20 year window, depending on producer and location, i.e. Talbot 2001, which was the first wine we ever sipped together that cost a little bit of money, is spot-on at the moment. 2003 could use another year. 2007 sipping well now, but that is a bit of an anomaly because of the vintage. Never, ever a dull moment

This was opened last night, and the remaining few ounces of the bottle sat in it without cork until this afternoon. So, lots of air. Plush, tangy black cherry fruit and cedar, with licorice and a spicy finish. The finish is loamy and reminds me of a wine that has plenty of age, the tobacco leaf notes that age brings. I don't have any experience with this wine or much from this producer but there is plenty of fruit here that should allow it to keep aging.
