Quite possibly the greatest white wine I have ever had. Amazing depth! Citrus fruits and minerality with a finish that won’t quit. A wine that lives up to its reputation.

Stone fruit, honeysuckle and wet stone combined with neutral oak to create a Chardonnay that is best of the new and old world. Gtreat concentration and texture. It will be sad to see David Ramey not getting this fruit after 2015.

This has elegant oak on the nose with ripe orchard fruit, meyer lemon, red apple, etc. with a hint of rocky minerality. Excellent purity on the palate, medium+ length; only drawback on this for me is just a little bit too ripe with a light sweetness. They need to get this dry. The couple grams of RS were a big distraction from an otherwise lovely elegant chard.

Just open this and get ready to sink down deep into the blue fruit abyss. Really. Such pure fruit, with hints of herbs, dust, oh, maybe bacon fat? Just easy to suck down this one. Thanks David Ramey. Well done! And will probably still be great for another 5 years if cellared properly.

Wowzers! Very delicious nectar here! Extremely long finish of peach pie and vanilla yogurt. It has a very nice tang to the creaminess, excellent acidity cutting through the fruit. A delicious drink to be savored on its own but really good with some crunchy fresh potato chips! (Also my go to for Champagne) My only reservations are the nose which is great but doesn't really seem unique. This as good as California Chard can be for me. I can only go to Champagne or older CDP for better. Excellent work Ramey Family!

  • David Ramey commented:

12/20/13, 9:46 AM - Jonallen--since we only move our wines three times in their life, including to bottle, we retain much of the CO2 from the yeast and malolactic fermentations. This can lend a slight petillance which helps the wine to age well, adding life and freshness. It in no way a sign of spoilage--all of our wines are bone dry and finished malo. That liveliness may not be something you're used to, but it's part of our house style.

  • David Ramey commented:

10/15/15, 3:42 PM - I think you win the record for delayed comment, Jon! The 2002 vintage was the bottling with the highest level of CO2; we've moderated a bit since. It does help the wine age, though. On malo-lactic, you should know that essentially all white Burgundies go through malolactic--this is something that wines do naturally unless the winemaker intervenes with SO2. So ML-plus Chards don't have to be fat and blowsy.

If you get the Wall Street Journal, Lettie Teague recommends our 2012 Russian River Chardonnay in today's online version; it will be in Saturday's print issue. And by all means, check out our Chards: www.rameywine.com.

If you know Don Cornwell's website on Burgundy premox you might check the results of the tasting at Valentino--our 2006 Hyde was second in its flight.

Spectacular. Drank alongside a 2007 Tor CS Cimarossa Vineyard. The Ramey has the sweetest tannins and a delicate finish -- it is like the taste of a really fine cigar without the smoke. I give a 94 to the 93 for the Tor.
Do you know what I mean about the cigar taste? A great cigar tastes amazing, but there is always the smoke fouling your lungs. This was like that without the smoke.
Sorry that is the best I can do. I will not be asked to write reviews for Parker anytime soon. Ha!

Definitely needs some time and will develop. Hot on the nose and a touch thin. But it is a beautiful expression of balanced, elegant syrah. Fruit and smoke with light earth and not much climate on the mouthfeel or taste. Instead it is thin and refined, ready to drink with or without food. Give it time and it will be even better I'm sure.
  • David Ramey commented:

6/4/14, 10:56 AM - Thank you, Rkosd. What you taste is cool climate Syrah from a cold vintage, so it comes across as more refined and less powerful than a warmer vintage wine. Try it with cassoulet to see how it cuts through the fat of the sausage.
    Cheers,
    David

Dark red-purple. Vibrant nose, reminiscent of Leonetti cabernet of the late 1980's: smokey coffee grounds, tobacco leaf, cherry, basil, hint of green olives. On arrival, medium tannin and medium-low acidity suggests this is a early and mid-term drinking style wine. Develops quickly and the tannin propel the taste into a satisfyingly rich, complete and balanced cabernet experience. I'm going find a couple of these to keep around for steak over the next year or so; I think they'd age fine for a few years but who cares ! It's terrific as is now.
  • David Ramey commented:

6/4/14, 10:53 AM - Thank you, Hodby, glad you like it. It is a bit lighter than the '10 or '12 due to the cooler vintage, but it should hold well in bottle for at least 15 years from vintage. Cheers!

i find the '08 a bit less complex than '09 and '10 but it makes it so easy to drink ... another great Ramey white wine experience
  • David Ramey commented:

5/20/14, 9:24 AM - Thanks, MD. I agree with your assessment: in 2008 we had a ten-day heat wave end of August-early September which rushed the harvest yet resulted in fatter wines. I prefer '09 to '08 and even more, 2010, which was the coolest vintage of the three (with '11 being even cooler). Cheers, David

Nose was dusted cherry, pencil/graphite, oak, earth. Consistent with prior notes black fruits, chocolate, cedar Sweet and integrated tannins. Smooth mouthfeel

Excellent wine, in a good place now and seems like it will last a while. It will continue to mellow but my guess is it wont add too much more complexity.

Super. Enticing nose of green apple, orange rind, nutmeg and cut grass is a prelude to crisp and clean flavors of fresh green apple and some pineapple. A nice note of minerality hits the mid-palate, and the wine finishes with zippy acidity and just a touch of softness to round things out. Crisp and clean, without being too tart or harsh. Great effort.

This was the first bottle of the '01 I have had in 5 years, and it has developed dramatically into a truly stellar wine. Prior tastings were more monolithic and dense. Decanted for 4 hours, filtering out a surprising amount of sediment. The nose was abundant but refined, with pipe tobacco, dark fruit and some slate. Very powerful on the palate, but not at all heavy. A complex array of flavors, including, strangely enough, a strong sense of the seacoast on a foggy day; not something I associate with Cab. Really delicious. Big finish, more of a crescendo than the usual fade-out. I've always enjoyed David's wines, but this one is very special and has a lot of life left. I'm looking forward to my remaining 5 bottles over the next several years.

Still nearly opaque dark red with just a bit of lightening at the rim. Slow legs. Nose sorts sweetish red berry fruit with a hint of menthol. Really opens up with air. Characteristic cabernet fruit. Smooth entry, quickly makes its presence felt with full body and rich, deep fruit. No weak sister, this, though the tannins are mostly resolved and chewy. Fairly lengthy across the palate and into the finish. Drinking nicely now but could last for years and may even evolve further. Good acid backbone signals potential for further development. Not a blockbuster but enjoyable, to say the least. 4-12-16-8: 90/100.

95-96+ Points. Served around 62-66F from a previously coravined bottle with 8-10~ ounces remaining. Graciously shared by DarinC.

On the nose, rich dark fruits lurking underneath layers of roasted meats, white pepper and cinnamon spice. Over time the spice elements dominate the nose, reminiscent of an imported Asian camphor wood chest.

On the palate, black berry compote and rich dark currants give way to black olive tapenade and pepper spices. There's incredible density, purity and richness here on the mid-palate. Structurally the wine has remarkable finesse and detail due to solid acidity. There's enough tannin here as well that it provide some firmness and texture on the palate.

Despite it's expressiveness, it's clear that there's remarkable depth here and the wine is still quite young with more to offer. The fruit characteristics, while ripe, do not dominate but instead offer a beautiful entry into a gorgeous mid-palate. Plenty of pleasure now, but I feel like this wine has more to offer in the future. Hold for another 2-3 years and drink for the following 5+ years. Phenomenal.
