Gosh this is such a beautiful, food friendly wine. Yet this vintage more "orange" than last with more texture and coloration. Vintage or style change? Think I might have liked last vintage ever more still.

Beautiful bright garnet color. Fragrant and alluring nose of red berries, fresh-turned earth and telltale violets. Although I've read dolcetto is not an inherently high acid grape, this makes my mouth water with anticipation, never a bad sign. There's a lightness as well no doubt conferred by the 12.5% alcohol, grazie mille.

Light-to-medium bodied, it dances across the palate and reminds me that I once lost a bet in college because I couldn't believe the word "gavotte" appeared in the song "You're so vain." While it's French, not Italian, gavotte is defined as "lively peasant kissing dance" according to brittanica.com, and I don't think I can do any better than that in describing the impression this makes. Dolcetto in skilled hands can be a sheer delight (it can also be clubbed to death by late picking and over-extraction). But don't take the word peasant literally-at least in this wine there's an edge of refinement and elegance befitting a higher station.
  • SiR commented:

7/15/20, 6:14 AM - Hi Bevetroppo - excellent TN, a pleasure to read and it's spot on!

Nose was very reductive when first opened I was about to give up on it but gave it some time in the glass...after 15min the reduction blew off and what was left was raspberry and pyrazines, very typical cab franc smell from the Loire Valley that I like so much but many I understand dislike. In the mouth acidity is pretty high alcohol is medium low and tannins are medium. Color is magenta. The taste in the mouth is of a great sweet attack followed by some drying tannins and a finale with good lenght. Given the price certainly worth holding on a few for 5 years to develop some complexity.
  • SiR commented:

9/30/19, 7:22 AM - Hi Hanibal - I certainly agree with you about the reduction on that one. This one is a textbook Loire Cab Franc in my opinion. Love it or hate it - it's not for everyone...

My only complaint is that it might be a little thin on the mid-palate and doesn't deliver the same complexity as a Bordeaux.
Still a couple of year ahead, even though I would not expect to improve much as its definitely within its drinking window. Nonetheless, this was interesting to taste a properly aged Cabernet Sauvignon from Portugal - old world style without any doubt.

However, the diesel note you get might be from the varietal itself given that Manzoni Bianco is a cross between Riesling and Pinot Blanc (like most of the Alpes surrounding wine regions)

Even though I haven't tasted side to side, the Nebbiolo has more grit tannin wise. A good wine I wouldn't hesitate to rebuy (probably like any other bottling from Vajra...), but does note deliver as much as the Langhe Rosso that is built for short to medium term drinking. I mean you can find as good Langhe Nebbiolo from other producers in the same price bracket while the Rosso is a gem.

2003 Domaine Chapelle & Fils Santenay 1er Cru La Comme Pinot Noir

Chapeau.

  • SiR commented:

12/6/18, 7:27 AM - Hey Manukey - It's quite a legitimate question considering the price tag difference. To put things in perspective, I (luckily) discovered the Foillard Cote du Py with the superb 2009 vintage and just realize that it was at the exact same price tag as the Lapierre (~$37 at BC Liquor - as I was living in Vancouver back then). The Foillard Cote de Py, over the 2009-2010-2011, definitely had a good an edge over the Lapierre, so at the same price, it's a no brainer. Aside from the 2015 vintage, Foillard in my own opinion is quite ethereal, it grows on you and is worth the extra $. I just look at my last TN of 09 (2 years ago) and those can evolve into something really special with similarities to some much more expensive Cote de Nuits which justifies the $45-$50 range.
    Hope this helps,

    Cheers!

5/6/17, 2:04 PM - Indeed! On a FYI basis, the '15 vintage was just released last Thursday on saq.com... I just couldn't resist to get my hands on a few bottles. If you enjoy this type of northern rhone syrah, I strongly recommend Francois Villard Crozes-Hermitage - Comme une Evidence which is delicious (well the '14 was and the '15 was just released).
    Cheers!

4/14/17, 1:28 PM - Haha this is a good one! I did exactly the same. After being able to scoop only one bottle of 1er cru from Raveneau when SAQ released the 13' vintage last summer, I was on the hunt for good Chablis and did exactly the same... bought 2 bottles of (Jean et Sebastien) Dauvissat online thinking it was Vincent.
Nonetheless, in my opinion this one is worth a $35 - $40 range Chablis 1er cru.

10/14/16, 7:39 AM - Hi Tward – Initially I thought that the first bottle was biased by the fact that it was drank aside an austere tannic beast (Gaja Dagromis), but the 2nd one I had on its own did confirm its appeal at this early stage. Nonetheless enjoy your case given the drinking window is probably pretty wide

6/7/16, 3:44 PM - Thing is - I wish I could have bought some more... I moved back to Montreal after 7 years in Vancouver last year and to my surprise I found 2 bottles of Blue Mountain Brut on the SAQ shelves (provincial monopole). Bitter sweet as those 2 just reminded me how good some of the BC wines are.

BTW how do you know ahead of time that it's 10% this week-end? It doesn't seem to be advertised on their website.

I always loved Catherine & Pierre Breton products, I use to have access to mostly all their wines when I use to live in Vancouver, BC. That would be great if saq could offer their "Avis de vin fort" Bourgueil... It's a very light refreshing red with short time maceration on the skin that is perfect for the summer time.

This is a good a pretty good wine, but I definitely feel there something missing to make it an outstanding Rioja. Even after proper decanting and time to breath, it lacks some sparks to make it alive.

7/9/15, 11:38 AM - Hi Harley, as you seem to have tasted quite a lot of Rioja's, which producer would you direct me to? My personal experience limits itself to Faustino (which I do enjoy, but I don't get the hype behind "that" particular vintage), Beronia, Lopez de Heredia (Crianza to GR) and had a chance to enjoy some older Bodegas Montecillo GR. I understand most of the GR have quite potential ageing, but how years should we wait to grasp the maturity potential?

1/29/15, 7:07 AM - Hi Mrfroopy - I fully agree with you on that one. The only thing for me is that I just moved from Vancouver, BC to Montreal, QC and realized the monopoly liquor store doesn't hold any of Domaine La Pepiere. Hopefully, I'll try to find a private importer as this stuff gets quite addictive.

    11/3/14, 10:02 AM - Hi Mulligan,
Despite the fact that drinking windows are always hard to predict and that discovering the evolution of the wine as the years go by much more interesting (but that doesn't hold on when you don't have many bottles...), I would assume this one would reach peak somewhere 8-12 years after vintage (2016-2020). Also, have in mind this was the first Brunello I tried from this producer, so I have no point of comparison with other vintages over time.

However, I remember I was on the Pacific coast in Mexico when I had this. Drank 1/2 bottle one night, only re-corked unfinished bottle that stayed at the suite temperature (with A/C at least), and finished the other half 3 days later. Just the fact that the wine was as good if not better on the 3rd day, normally is good indicator for its ageing potential.

It's sad we can't get much fruit behind all that vanilla flavor.

This is such a disapointment in comparison with '11 Altelsino Rosso di Montalcino which is vibrant with a nice depth in its youth.

4/15/14, 10:05 AM - As we were four to share the bottle, it went down quickly to move to something that worked better with the service.

If I had known, I would have opened up something else right away... and give this one a try the following day after a small trip into the decanter.
