I would have thought this was a Rioja, where in general I find more finesse than in Ribera. Fantastic bouquet that kept evolving all night. Almost no rim color variation. On the palate a beautiful show of dark fruit with some savory notes of meat and of sweet vanilla oak. The whole experience is framed by the perfect level of acidity which keeps it fresh and youthful. A remarkable wine in which you can find the so uncommon combination of power, but with elegance, complexity and refinement. Well done!

Decanted for a couple of hours. Dark ruby/purple-colored, almost no signs of aging. Nice aromas of cassis, black licorice, meats, with a hint of mint. Very nice and refined, but it would require a little more complexity to deserve a higher score. Medium weight but great depth, and a long finish. Tongue-coating tannins that are not completely resolved. This almost 20-year-old claret is clearly not at its peak, and should get a higher score if given another 5 years.

Had it at the Blantyre in Lenox, MA. Recommended by Christelle, the fantastic sommelier of this fantastic country retreat. This is simply a beautifully aged Pinot Noir. Red ruby color, with no signs of bricking. On the nose it is complex, with subtle aromas of black currants, cherries, smoke and a softly gamey quality. In the mouth this has gorgeous concentration and a velvety texture. Medium-bodied, yet fully flavored, and a precise level of acidity that makes it feel so well integrated. Supple ripe tannins and lovely flavors of cassis, blackberry, and the typical earthiness that is so distinctive of this appellation. Enormous purity and balance, this is simply: bottled elegance.

Had it at the Blantyre in Lenox, MA. Tried it on a two wine tasting with Spottswoode 1990. Dark ruby color, almost no presence of aging, really impressive for an almost 24-year-old Napa Cab. The nose is almost muted and inexpressive. In the mouth it has a nice velvety texture, with red fruits and nice level of acidity, surprisingly youthful, but it lacks depth and complexity. I don’t think it will evolve or develop more with time.

Had it at the Blantyre in Lenox, MA. Tried it on a two wine tasting with Dalla Valle Vineyards 1990. Clear hue, with some evident bricking. By its appearance I would have thought it is an old Pinot Noir. The nose is austere and slightly gamey, with some black currant and wet forest floor. Past its peak but still enjoyable, tannins are entirely resolved, tobacco and gamey flavors, but a little monotone and lacks the complexity that I was expecting.

Had it at the Blantyre in Lenox, MA. Very impressed with their outstanding cellar. Served from a half bottle. Very dark, almost inky color, it looks surprisingly young. Nose is intense, and very classic Bordeaux. Tobacco, cassis and cedar. In the mouth it exhibits a lot of power with sweet tannins, and so much complexity and depth. An extremely well integrated and balanced claret. It is drinking beautifully now, and would keep providing enormous pleasure for many more years.
