Drinks on a higher plain, even beyond most 1er Cru bottlings. Everything you want from Chablis, and incredible value.

This is fully mature, with dark black fruits yielding a subtle Bordeaux-like perfume. Silky and generous on the palate, this wine delivers a modern style of Bolgheri that somehow retains that lean Italian styling so attractive and easy to drink.

A textbook, structured, big and thick and smooth Napa Cab, too young to show its hand. Right now, it is too tannic and one-dimensional, but seems poised to unveil some complexity. In a few years. This estate is a hidden gem with small production varietals sourced from quality sites around the valley, and sold at very reasonable prices.

This little gem overdelivers with rich, ripe black plum and blue fruits, finishing with typical forest floor and chalky earthiness. If the rich fruit on the initial attack were to carry through on the finish, this would be ranked up there with the best St. Emilion Grand Crus. Maybe this chateau will make the leap in 2016 or 2018/9?

This is polished with sweet oak that masks the otherwise delicious lower tone red plum and pomegranate fruit. Needs a year or two to integrate; potential for excellence.

Fully mature and broad shouldered. Already throwing some chunky sediment--the good kind. A gem of a Napa Cab that doesn't scream at you, full, ripe, and mouthfilling, with the Calistoga touch of faint minerality. Drink up now.

Lost and found. This mines something really deep and authentic that is not common even from the many superstar and traditional producers in the region. Integrates the oak treatment as expertly as the premium Jadot cru bottlings, and with a lower, darker tone. The palate cleansing acidity rides this to the finish line--a long, intense finish that is more pinot-like, akin to a mature Mercurey 1er Cru. Fully mature. Drink up.

Rich, dripping with dark black fruits and forest floor, satiny and palate coating texture, mature but not without structure. This is deep, complex with little weight. Leans toward the modern,, without the Pesquera or Arzuaga piquant, or the Vega Siciia woodsiness. Its soft textures may not be the most compatble with bold foodstuffs.

A somewhat atypical Reserva, with a load of personality. Not yet mellow, the prickly tannins and high acidity keeping this fresh and yielding fantastic minerality on the finish. This promises great things.

Soft, rope, and borderline jammy, this delivers old vine plushness and spicy bramble. The peppery spice from the Syrah and Petite Sirah gives it a dry finish on an otherwise sweet mouthful of dark berry fruit.

A leaner, but nonetheless intense and spicy version. This has the feel of a Loire Valley red, herbal and peppery, with a food-friendly edge that is very much different from the big Colchagua and Maipo versions.

Burgundy Al is right: Boyer-Martenot wines do not age well or consistently, UNTIL NOW? Vincent Boyer has fundamentally changed up the wine making process, resulting in his most thrilling wines ever in the 2018 vintage. Hopefully the ageability will improve commensurately.

This bottling is one of the little miracles in the white wine world, and this vintage proves that it ages beautifully. The golden hues do not foretell any oxidation, but the savory lower tone notes suggest full maturity. An Alvarinho of great complexity and enough freshness to drive through seafood, even sashimi.

This wine always sheds its initial austerity after about 4-5 years. Never perfumed or complex, it hits the palate with dark fruit intensity and finishes with classical claret dry extract , leaving a lasting imprint. The 2010 was a huge success, and the 2014 follows the trend in a slightly less weighty styls. For fans of the darker expressions of Pessac, Paulliac, Saint-Estephe. Super value.

As noted before, this is surprisingly austere and approaching trocken character. The underlying fruit is there, but cannot break through. That said, this is a toothsome drink, a steely, palate cleansing dry white wine that only begs for another sip.

Third bottle, tasted at yearly intervals since 2018. This has really turned the corner. The previously awkward mix of tannin, acidity, and fruit has developed into a satiny package of muscular, full-bodied and richly flavored brew. Has the brawn of a 2016 and seems poised to develop secondary nebbiolo flavors over the next few years. A real sleeper.

This bottling always rewards a few years of patience. Concentrated, dark but fresh, the style is decidedly European, shunning the boysenberry juice of its many Mendoza inferiors. This vintage has shed its tannic straitjacket and shows beautiful balance and Cabernet-like muscle. The dark berry fruit transcends the varietal and ives the wine its personality.

This has the depth and richness of the Silex bottlings, with less barrel influences. Remains crisp on finish--clean cut. A Sancerre of great distinction.

What it lacks in classical Gamay aromatics it makes up in sappy, deep kijafa cherry and blue fruit flavor backed by tannic structure and just enough acidity to water the mouth. And a hint of granite minerality to boot. A beauty.

Dark inky, in the modern style. Tannins restrain, but do not hide, the deep blue and red fruits and that French violet pastille that seems to feature in the special bottlings by top Rioja producers (like Muga's Seleccion Especial). This is the biggest and maybe the best wine yet in this series--one for 5+ years of cellar time.

A high-toned gem that unfolds in waves of satin. Nothing simple about the wild red berry fruit and the vibrancy that persists on the palate. Can't remember a bottle of Burgundy so stunning at this price point.

A sexpot--drinking modern in profile, but with that JNSQ that comes only from Bordeaux pedigree. Silky and rich right out of the bottle, this is almost Stags Leap AVA in style, with fully integrated oak and blue flowers and black fruits. Comparisons with the Grand Vin are pointless, as this lacks the exotic sandalwood and cigar box nuances that emerge with bottle age. But this is ready to go, and its appeal is universal.

Mineral-laden attack is like an archaeological dig, with some relief on the pure, clean and intense finish. Virtually weightless. This is for terroir purists, and raw shellfish lovers.

Elegance over power, it is shy on nose and palate, but has a little something for everyone. A perfect summer Barbaresco/Barolo for its light to medium bodied elegance (try fresh Montauk tuna on the grill), but it has plenty of The Profound. Not to be wasted on red sauce--save over the next 10 years of fine dishes like light game and aged meats. This transcends the vintage and is very fine in its sour cherry/blood orange/rose petal splendor.

May be Ashley's greatest vintage. A triumph that makes its AVA boutique peers look either edgy or overpriced. Plump, almost fat/ borderline tropical fruit cascades down through a narrow vein of minerals and crystalline purity. Perfect drinking now, with many years ahead.

Deceptively monochromatic at first. The inner beauty will escape you if you don't give this a long decant or leave it for at least another 2-3 years. A satiny mouthfeel envelopes gobs of cassis fruit, finishing dry with hints of graphite and charcoal.

This is a big, powerful Pomerol with classical profile, but plenty of high and low tone red berry stuffing, in the modern style. Has all the elements: fruit, structure, all harmonious despite its youthful tannins--which already fold nicely on the finish.

Too young to judge at this point, but clearly shows a lot of restraint in a big fruit forward vintage. Maybe designed for the long-haul, but this is not a big, ripe wine, i.e., this is not 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014, to name a few vintages. The exotic, decadent side of Ducru is lurking somewhere I suspect--just not showing right now in this med-bodied, closed-down version.

A stunner. Impeccably balanced, as fresh as it was the day it was bottled. So righteously balanced that it could easily accompany a roast goose or pheasant, dove, or other wild fowl. Rich, but light on its feet, this packs a caressingl wallop with dry extract of pineapple, chirimoya, coconut creme, and macadamia on the finish. Reminiscent of the more ethereal vintages of D'Yquem.

This is packed with dark cherry fruit in a medium bodied, firm and balanced style. Not the big, ripe La Crema RRV or Hobbs or Hansel big cola/sassafras explosive style, but more along the lines of CP Stanley Ranch in its better days. The intensity of flavor and the underlying structure and bonded acidity propel this to a clean, dry, palate cleansing finish--perfect for grilled white meats, or even a filet mignon. No rush on this one, it is packed and will improve over the next few years or more.

This gets extra credit for being under $15 and drinking like $30-$50 Medoc or Merlot-driven Right Bank Bordeaux. Ripe, rich, round, structured (dollop of Cab Sauv), and poised in the glass, this gives off a whiff of tobacco and creme de cassis in the nose and mouth before giving way to astonishingly pure Merlot flavors that suggest the best of Pomerol. What it lacks in weight, it makes up for in gentle punch. Finishes pure, dry, and certainly long enough. Will please both Old World and California/Australia palates.

Sappy, rich, dense, extracted, decidedly not the LaPierre style, but a modern version that despite its dense cherry and dark berry fruit, manages be refreshing enough with a light chill for a summer roast chicken or juicy burger off the bbq

Surprisingly opulent, with some secondary flavors and a richly textured, velvety smooth pile of fruit, with sour cherry and Black Plum finishing with red and black licorice. This hass traded initial freshness for a richness that surprises in this classic vintage. But Who is complaining?

This is an opulent version with layered complexity, whatever sweetness in the lush fruit offset by a gearbox of movement on the palate, chutes and ladders in the way only great Zin can do. Finishes with a refreshing touch of acidity and tannin that would keep this in the running for everything from duck to BBQ. But it is something of a meal in itself.

Underperforming for the vintage, this seems diluted, and lacks concentration. Medium-bodied, woodsy and savory, it is a dry, competent food wine, at a reasonable tariff. But compared to its neighbors and to other 2014 results, especially in Pessac and St. Estephe. this is something of a dud.
