87? Yeah, it's overpriced, QPR challenged. It's about half as good as an $80 Napa cab, which is about right dollar wise considering it costs around $40, but just slightly better than a Chateau St. Michelle Indian Wells which we just bought for $11.77.

The Titus is an enjoyable bottle, no doubt, but the math doesn't work out in its favor. At $24.99 it would be a 91.

8/12/17, 12:24 PM - I've been buy Titus since the '03/'04 vintages. I really like their wines - but miss the days when it was a good valuel at $22 for cab and $18 for zinfandel.

Nose of berries, flowers, herbs, violets, bit of candy. Very reticent, only comes through after a couple of hours, I initially thought it might be corked. The palate is all about juicy, mouthwatering acidity, some firm but yielding tannin and the finish. This is very close to what you'd expect from a Barolo though it lacks a little density of flavour to be truly great value.

Deep, dark garnet in color; almost opaque with little signs of aging. Full, forward & attractive nose of complex, ripe fruit aromas of blackberries, dark cherries & cassis with overtones of earthy/dusty, dark cocoa, cedar & tobacco notes, dried herbs, minerals, spices & some oak & vanilla in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, still lush, ripe fruit flavors of blackberries, dark cherries & cassis with dark cocoa, herbs, minerals, earthy, spices, oak & vanilla in the background. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & airing but still has the potential for continued development with additional aging, even at 16 years of age. A wonderful aged Napa Cabernet full of lush ripe dark fruits combined with depth & structure.

3/10/17, 3:35 PM - Thanks for a great review. I have been looking at this bottle for a year and wondering if I let it go too long. I'm looking forward to opening it this weekend.

A little rich for my taste and lacking in acid to combat the richness. Yellow apple, honeysuckle and canned fruit cocktail. Well balanced but more residual sweetness than I was anticipating. My nieces (22, 23) loved this white.

1/6/17, 5:04 PM - I reviewed the wrong wine. These notes were for a 2011 Pouilly-Fusse. My apologies for the confusion

Blind Zinfandel Tasting (Prior Lake, MN): An interesting zinfandel which stood out as the oddball in this tasting lineup as it didn't seem to taste like zinfandel.
Loads of spice and earth, a little anise/tobacco, but very little fruit.
This was a divisive wine, receiving both 3 first place votes but also 2 second to last place votes.
My #6 of 7 wines, wife #3, group's 1st place.

3/27/16, 4:40 PM - We always feel the same way about this wine. We really like it, but it's a difficult wine to get a handle on. We call it a cabernet disguised as a zinfandel. Thank you for sharing the review.

I liked this the first time I had it, hence buying four bottles. This was so sickly sweet though I had a half glass and dumped the rest. I didn't even want to keep it for cooking. I should have kept it until tomorrow to see what happens with it so I did act a little rash.

9/22/14, 6:10 PM - We kept it for three more days...it never got any better!

Muted and meaty in texture rather than clean and bright. Would have been better with less alcohol.

9/25/13, 4:20 PM - Meaty was a great way to describe this wine. I originally thought that maybe the glass was dirty, or that I had not rinsed it enough. I appreciate the comments

Backus vs. Insignia (Atheneum Intercontinental Hotel, Athens, Greece.): Fantastic cab. Very dark purple. Complex nose of dark chocolate, dark berries, plums and sweet oak. Full-bodied, dense, with firm tannins of excellent quality, ripe but by no means stewed fruit and balancing acidity Very long aftertaste. Needs another 5 years to reach its peak but can be already enjoyed with a richly sauced meat dish.

5/9/13, 3:51 PM - Thank you for this excellent review. We have most of these bottles in our cellar - and were discussing the order in which to open them. Insignia was our first "big" wine that we fell in love with. I've only tasted Backus at the Winery, and was looking for a time to open one of them at home. I found your notes very helpful, and we are going to open our first one this weekend.
