This is wonderful. There is something old and wise about this wine, although it has barely been bottled. It is not over the top - in fact, it is the very opposite: subtle, layered, full of deep gravel rather than frothy loam. A beautifully pure pinot. I don't know how this will age, but it is so good now that I don't really care to find out.

This was nicely balanced wine. However, we were scalped/exploited at the winery ($38). Should moral integrity be a part of how you evaluate and rate a wine? If you patronize and visit the winery, shouldn't the wine be a few dollars cheaper than the price at your local wine store? Why would paying a premium at the winery ever make good repudiational sense?

These comments drew a critical response, but it doesn't appear here for some reason.
  • jacamp16 commented:

3/1/13, 10:27 AM - How do you feel that you were "scalped/exploited" at the winery, exactly? Was it because you paid retail value for a premium producer's wine? Your comments make it very clear that you don't understand much about the wine business, which is surprising after looking at your profile and seeing how many bottles you've consumed. You're not paying a premium. The winery sets the price of the wine. The premuim, or discount as the case me be, comes into play once that bottle hits the shelf of your "local wine shop."

Totally different interpretation than that of rjfoss......Fabulous nose of vanilla and berries. Deep crimson color. Lucious and flavorful. Drinking beautifully now. Wish I had more than one bottle of this left.
  • jacamp16 commented:

2/26/13, 4:06 PM - Can I assume that you let this properly open up as opposed to @rjfoss? He mentions a reticent nose the very next sentence after he said that he popped and poured... Pretty unfair to the wine if you ask me.

The Iberian Peninsula (My apartment): Boy oh boy do I love this wine. I tasted this a few months ago but I had forgotten how amazing it was until today's tasting. Caveat: this is *extremely* oaky and most certainly not a "traditional" Rioja. I'm not talking super blockbuster punch-your-teeth-out oak, it's certainly not that, but this is all about the soft, creamy, sweet, almost powdery (in the perfumery sense) oak. The leathery, slightly meaty dark cherry is smooth, silky and supple. Everything is functioning perfectly now - tannin, acid, fruit and oak. Drink drink drink! Can't believe this only cost me $20.

Distinctly Bordeaux nose with hints of eucalyptus and cedar alongside reddish mulberry. Multi-layered, swirling fruits in glass;intense, hints of pepper, cool fruits - supple with some some unctuousness and lingering tannins. Beautifully structured, and surprisingly enjoyable at this stage of its development. Give it 5 years and see then

This was my CT Secret Santa gift - - thanks very much to Wine Gopher for a terrific and generous gift! I decanted 2.5 hours and then served with grilled, seasoned filet mignon and baked potato. Despite the decant, the first glass was a bit closed up. The second glass, however, as we were close to finishing the meal, was quite vibrant with the bright fruit in beautiful contrast to the very soft and elegant mouthfeel. This was a great gift - thanks again!

Deep ruby red with garnet/slight tawny rim.
Nose of intense and concentrated cassis, cedar, graphite pencil shavings.
Palate of concentrated core of dark fruit, including cassis, dark plums with cedar, fresh pencil shavings and subtle herbaceousness.
Full body, full flavoured, firm but smooth tannins on the finish.
Impossibly long length.
Still a bit young and needs longer to develop, (even with 2 hrs decanting) but an amazing wine.

Deep garnet in the glass with slight bricking. Briar, blackberry, cassis and black pepper on the nose. Wonderful ripe black & blue fruit upfront surrounded by smoked meat and wrapped in black pepper firm tannins. A full bodied wine with a long finish that will go for 3-5 years more in the cellar.

The wine is a deep ruby to violet color. The sexy nose has black raspberries, cherries, Asian spices, wood smoke, violets, vanilla, minerals and some earthiness. This has medium body, moderate, ripe tannins, and very nice acidity. The palate shows nice, rich, smoky, spicy, dark berries and cherry flavors with some subtle earthiness adding depth. The finish is fairly long with the fruit giving way to the more savory elements. This is still on the young side and improved with air, but is very satisfying and enjoyable.

I don't understand the move The Matrix. Never have. This wine was like that for me. It was not what I expected (and I have had Ridge wines before, but they were Three Valleys). Maybe more sophisticated that I was ready for. but, just like The Matric, everyone was fascinated by it. I just stared at them glumly, and said "Really? Are you sure? I don't get it." It must be me. The score reflects the admission that I need to defer to others, especially when they are dinner guests who loved the wine. Who am I do contest that?

Ranked #1 on the first day of a three day Rose blind tasting. Pale salmon color. The nose on this wine yielded strawberries in cream, honeydew, melon rind and a hint of citrus. Dry with a clean acidity. Strawberries dominate the rich palate without being sweet or cloying. This wine is rich, delicious and interesting. The least expensive ($10) of all that we will taste, it should prove exciting to see how it holds up to the rest.

An intense and very powerfully oaked cab, with a wonderful core of dark fruits and sumptuous tannins. After the initial pop, the oak gushes out, both in the glass and on the tongue, a rich cedary vaniilla with a dark, almost black currant follow through and a tarry pitchlike finish of olive tapenade and silken cashmere berries - similar to a black cherry bittersweet chocolate mousse. For a wine of almost seven years, it's feeling incredibly young and spry. The oak attack does dissipate after the bottle has been open for two plus hours, I would suggest at least a three hour decant if it is opened now. Definitely one that will age much longer, and it hasn't even come close to its peak performance years.
