Some bacon, dark fruit, and olive notes. Needed air to open up. Is finally approachable and good, should continue to evolve. Not too soft, especially relative to how it tasted in its first year or two.

Few years away from its peak; tannins are still relatively bitter and get in the way even after two hours of decanting. A restrained style of St. Emillion, something I appreciate, without excess ripeness. A very poor pairing right now for any meals that have material sweetness in them; begs for a big fat steak and neutral sides, if any. Revisit in 2022 or later.

Needed an hour of decanting but was terrific after that. Layers of brunello fruit. Long finish. Plenty of life ahead still.

Very much ungiving upon opening, opens up considerably after an hour of decanting. Excellent, with much remaining promise.

Very much approachable after 1+ hour of decanting. Decent earthiness, some clay, and layers of fruit (Cab+Merlo+Cab Franc). The mild tannic bitterness on the backend is likely to dissipate in a year or two.

Shy upon opening, this baby was shining bright after 1-1.5 hour of decanting. Delightful brunello fruit, lots of energy and good acidity, with layers of dark cherry, dark chocolate, and tobacco/leather flavors. Highly likely to evolve further.

This is a terrific effort. Remarkable earthiness, much energy and restrain, and no excess opulence and ripeness whatsoever. Take a great St. Emillion and subtract any excess ripeness and richness of fruit and you would get a proxy of sorts (but not a perfect one, by any stretch). If you seek a typical over-the-top Napa Cab, keep looking elsewhere; for the rest of us this is a gem, especially at this price point. Not at its peak yet.

Definitely approachable and more already. But it is also likely to benefit from one more year. Much fruit on the palate.

Several notches below the Beaucastel in my opinion. Relatively fruit forward, with insufficient backbone and structure. Tasted over several hours of decanting.

Much more approachable than I expected, especially after 1+ hour of decanting. Juicy fruit with floral notes and no excess opulence. Likely to be at its peak over the next 5 years.

Napa is dominated by overpriced Cabs these days, in my opinion. This is a nice exception, even at the three-digit price tag. Young for sure, it benefits from decanting. Plenty of energy and structure, with well-integrated yet pronounced tannins and strong graphite/minerality notes. Stylistically, this is between Corison and Dunn Howell, but distinctively different and somewhat unique. Kept evolving over 4+ hours of decanting. I'd prefer a tad more acidity but that's only relative to some great Brunellos, Barbarescos, and GR Riojas that I like, which might not be fair. Has plenty of life ahead.

Excessive ripeness gets in the way, similar to my previous tasting in 10/2018. Several hours of decanting helps only marginally. Moderate acidity, could be higher.

Terrific energy, acidity, and balance. Tastes at its prime (relative to my prior 7 tastings since 2/2015) and gets better with air. Excellent take on mountain Chardonnay.

Oddly enough, the worst showing since my first tasting in 3/2018. The finish remained admittedly short and unimpressive, even over several hours of breathing. Moderate (and not high enough) acidity. Improved after 30 minutes of breathing but didn't become much of what I tasted in previous bottles.

There is some mild bottle variation with this vintage, at least based on my multiples tastings over the last 3+ years. This bottle tasted exceptionally well though. I'm generally more disappointed than impressed with Napa Cabs these days, but Dunn's Howell Mountain Cab remains reliable and impressive. Terrific depth and lively mountain minerality, with much red berry notes that are balanced and fairly elegant. Kept evolving over several hours of decanting, got to a relative steady state after 2 hours. 94-96 pts.

Some improvement relative to my last tasting in 9/2017, but fundamentally this is a highly ripe and alcoholic style of CDP, with minimal complexity. Tasted over 4 hours of decanting. Terrible value, with money better spent on Beaucastel and/or other varietals and makers.

Pretty young and retarded yet, or simply shut down (even on 2nd night, even if noticeably better compared with the 1st night). Not the best Barolo by any measure but should improve with more age. Hold for at least two more years before popping another bottle.

I continue to be a Corison's fan who repeatedly fails to see sufficient value in the Kronos bottling vs. Corison's regular bottling. This has become more accessible relative to my prior tasting, in 2017. But over 4 hours of decanting I failed to detect materially more oomph (in terms of complexity, energy, and overall tasting profile) relative to the regular 2012 bottling. There is a chance the difference will become more pronounced with much more age; seems like too much of a gamble to me given the materially higher price, at $150+.

Becoming approachable but is still few years away from its peak. Needed air. Tannins are reasonably integrated, with some steely and mineral bite on the finish that is hard to miss if you've had enough tasting benchmarks over the years. Great Pessac-Leognan profile, without excess ripeness and unnecessary opulence. Should be much (more) pleasure in 2022+. 92-94 pts.

The best showing for this vintage since my first tasting in 2017. Kept opening up over several hours of decanting. Silky but meaty fruit, with terrific balance, interesting texture, and wonderful energy. More like a delightful and thoughtful song.

Blackcurrant notes remain dominant and pronounced, something I like and appreciate. Good acidity and better integration of tannins relative to my prior tastings. Not much complexity though, hence, a lower score since my last tasting. Benefited from decanting for 1+ hour.

Similar to many past vintages, this is not a pop&pour. Dusty, grainy, and almost-mineral tannins on the palate upon opening (more so than usual relative to the 2011-2015 vintages I've tasted). Needed good 90 minutes of decanting to mellow out a bit. Lots of dark fruit, with good energy. Not at its peak yet.

Underwhelming overall, although I paid only $49 for it back in 2009. Notes of pencil lead and some iron. Kept improving over several hours of decanting, but the depth and complexity were consistently lacking throughout. A relatively short finish. I rarely say this: no regrets that this was my last bottle of the vintage.

Very much a poised and restrained style. Improved since my previous tastings over the last few years, but it's certainly slow to show much of what it has to offer. No rush, be it decanting or further cellaring.
