More subdused than I was expecting, solid fruit and a decent rhone flavored mid palate (wish it had more black pepper and barnyard) with nicely blended tannins. I believe I might have overpaid though at $32 (warehouse style store) since the comm average is $7 lower.

One small dig here - why exactly is this bottle labelled as "caliifornia." Sounds like there's some Lodi or Central Vallley fruit in this wine. Sorry but between Sonoma and Napa there should be plenty of areas that could be sourced to make this one an 85% designation eligible bottle.
  • BedrockMorgan commented:

12/27/23, 1:26 PM - Thanks for the comment on the wine. It is "California" appellation as it comes from a range of cool climate Syrah sites including Santa Maria and Santa Barbara along with Sonoma and Napa. Cheers!

  • BedrockMorgan commented:

1/1/24, 8:26 AM - The podcast, as mentioned above, goes into it more deeply but it comes from a number of SB sites including White Hawk, Bien Nacido, Nolan, Kimsey and more along with Weill and Hudson on the North Coast. All sites we typically make vineyard designate/higher end Syrah bottling from- this is a blend of declassified barrels.

14,5% alcohol.

Dense, youthful and fully opaque purplish-black color. The nose feels closed, earthy and dull with underwhelming aromas of sweet blackberry jam, some dusty notes, a little bit of boysenberry marmalade and a hint of alcohol. There's nothing much going on in the nose. The wine feels dry, understated and a bit soft on the palate with a full body and reticent, somewhat primary flavors of blackberry marmalade, some dusty notes of earth, a little bit of candied primary fruit and a hint of sweet, sunny dark fruit. The wine is medium-to-moderately high in acidity with quite tough and assertive tannins that bring in welcome firmness to balance out the softness in the body. The finish is rich, juicy and quite grippy with a dull and rather short aftertaste of dusty earth, some boysenberry, a little bit of meaty umami, a hint of cherry marmalade and a touch of earth. The high alcohol makes the wine end on a rather hot note.

Most likely the wine was ever-so-slightly corked. Nobody noticed any obvious TCA aromatics, but the muted fruit flavors and somewhat earthy-and-dusty overall feel made us think the wine wasn't in a sound condition and most likely was suffering from a minute amount of TCA, making the wine just dull and underwhelming without making it appear overtly flawed. What a disappointment.

Drank with a diverse group of about 10 wines. This came across as good, but a touch sweet. Color was super purple (some commented “mega purple?”, which we all knew wasn't the case, but it still had that uber-vibrant color on an 8-year old wine). Ultimately, a good wine, but not the best Papera I have had or the best of what Bedrock can do.
  • BedrockMorgan commented:

9/6/21, 8:30 PM - Sorry it didn't show well- 2014 was a challenging year but that is not a great excuse. That said, we have NEVER used mega-purple in our wines, just the power of Carignan, Zin and mixed blacks in this particular situation.

Pop n pour and let sit for an hour to get some air. Dusty, earthy, with aroma of freshly crushed stone. Straight forward dark fruit, boysenberry, marionberry, black pepper spice. Mouth drying texture that I attribute to acid rather than tannin because it’s very up front. Then the young tannins kick in and cut the fruit off in an abrupt finish. Recork and check back in the next evening.
Day 2, a musty kinda mildew-like funk on the nose. Fruit is still walled off and the palate is pretty shut down. Petite has taken over for the most part. The berry fruit from yesterday is hidden and it’s showing some heat and bitterness on the finish. I mean there’s some fruit there but this should be showing more complexity based on what’s in it and it’s still just straight forward. Not sure what to make of this wine. Perhaps it just needs more time. I won’t be in a hurry to open my other bottle.

Flawed. I like the idea of Bedrock winery--buying up old vineyards to save them from development and buying grapes from the best growers but I have been having a run of mostly mediocre to poor bottles lately. This bottle seems to be infected with cork taint--that moldy taste that doesn't go away even on night three. I am thinking I will hold off buying any more wines from them until they deal with it. Not having similar problems with Carlisle, Ridge, River-Marie, Paul Hobbs even though they all get the same storage.

Overrated by others here. I taste alcohol, tannins, and acid, but no fruit.....another bland saignee. Its popularity is a mystery to me.

And though your confidence is impressive I would note the wine is completely made from old-vine Mataro and Grenache that is picked between 11.5% and 12.8% potential alcohol and whole-cluster pressed- I have never used saignee for the wine, ever.

Last Bedrock Evangelho I had was the '11, and this one was a complete departure in style. This wine had none of the wonderful crunchy red berries and lively acidity of the '11. Instead, the '13 had low acidity with dark red fruits that were flat, muddled and a bit roasted. Two very different vintages of course but still underwhelmed by this wine based on its own merits.
  • BedrockMorgan commented:

6/12/16, 8:16 AM - For what it is worth, the 2011 was actually picked quite a bit riper than the 2013, the pH lower and the acid is higher. Poured blind, as part of a 3 wine 2011 Papera zinfandel flight. Of the three wines (the other two being Carlisle and Williams Selyem), this finished last place for me by a good distance. Why? For one, it tasted and looked aged. By first guess was some kind of older zin, like something 10 years of age, say 2006 vintage. It had a roasted, mulled quality, tasting tired. There was also a spearmint gum note to me in the finish, like a stick of Doublemint was flavored into it. Surprising, as given the vintage and the skill of Bedrock, I would not have expected this but again, this was served blind and my notes were honest to what was behind the foil.
  • BedrockMorgan commented:

3/5/16, 8:45 AM - Hi Frank. I cannot help but think you got an off bottle of this wine- out of curiosity where was it stored? Your notes could indicate heat damage. When we did our 2011 restrospective tasting a few months ago this wine was fresh and vibrant and just behind that Saitone Ranch as one of our favorite wines from the vintage. I am not sure how much we have in the library but if there is enough I am happy to provide a replacement bottle. Sorry you had a bad experience with it!

Taken to Scratch for happy hour and poured around the table before I tried it and realized it was corked. There was so much fruit in the original wine that it remained drinkable, I'd give it an 70 and the rest of the table maybe an 80-85 if they thought in those terms. I have been purchasing bedrock since the 2009 vintage. When I first tried the wines based off the fantastic reviews I found at WB, I thought they were just young. I decided to start putting them away as soon as they arrived and not touching them for at least 2 years. As I have accumulated more than a few bottles, I wanted to start drinking some and thought this wine would be "Safe" Popped and decanted for several hours. At first I get big, black fruit and lots of it, with a semi strong tannic background/structure. But at mid palate I seem to get this tart acidity. Its a stark contrast to the initial impression and not complimentary in my opinion. The wife and I followed this wine over several hours and the tartness did die down, but what was left was just not showing me what all the hype says about this maker. I think I have come to the realization Bedrock simply not my style. Sad now that I have so many bottles.
  • BedrockMorgan commented:

3/9/15, 8:45 PM - Sorry to hear of your displeasure with the wine. For what it is worth 2010 is one of the biggest outlier vintages we have had in California due to the cold summer and then unimaginable heat that came in late August and caused a fair amount of sunburn. I would be happy to replace this bottle with a North Coast Syrah from 2011, 12, or 13, all of which I prefer and might be more to your taste.

Nice wine, very primary, simple blue fruit, short on finish. Bought this wine based on the 93-95 point reviews from others on CT. I have found the $25 Bedrock wines more appealing. I expected more density, and depth. So ends my Bedrock purchases.

6/1/14, 6:13 PM - Hey there- This wine is a baby as I make the Heritage wines in a way that are meant to resemble Ridge or Ravenswood wines of the early 90's- which have aged beautifully. However, unlike a lot of Zinfandel producers this means that some of the wines are not immediately accessible upon release (though some people like them with more structure and primary character). The lower priced wines, like the Old Vine are meant for earlier consumption, which is why you may have had a better experience with them.

Replevin. When do you suggest that I release the wines? Do you say that Napa Cabernets that are meant to be aged for a while to gain complexity are also released too early?

Hot, light, and lean. Unbalanced acidity. There is some tart rasberry fruit, but this is my first disappointing Bedrock wine. An expensive mistake. Avoid.

5/30/14, 10:39 AM - Hi there- Sorry you did not enjoy the wine. Thankfully this has not been the experience for most other people and critics who have had it. We would happily replace or refund other bottles of this wine that you might have with one you might enjoy more. -Morgan

Corked! A shame, wine beneath seemed nice.

Decanted and drank over two hours. Bottom line is this needs time, probably 2-3 years. Heavy oak on the nose. Can get some blackberry and plum in the aroma, but it is heavily covered by the oak. The taste is pretty much consistent. It developed a bit more after two hours, but still nowhere near where you would want it to be. Don't drink this, and I can't give it a score now.

3/26/14, 8:45 PM - Just an FYI, this wine only saw 20% new French oak.

I'd like Bedrock a lot more if they bottled under Stelvin. Sadly, this bottle suffered from low-level cork taint - ugh.
