I have been a Seghesio fan for 10+ yrs. I bought a case of this originally and since added another case. After last night I am thinking about a third case. One might not even guess this is a Zin because it lacks the typical bite/tanginess, yet is full bodied with a big taste, but has a softness not usually found in Zins. The wine was released at about $20 and is now in the $35 range - the market has figured out that this is a wonderful wine.

This was our #1 wine at a six course Zin dinner -we had two bottles. Hard to believe that the wine has held up for about 35 years. The color is great and there is no oxidation and still has lots of fruit. Perhaps the unusually high alcohol rate of 15.7 - unusually high 35 years ago - has helped the wine hold up. We also had an 81 Cakebread Zin which is gone and a 94 Cakebread which was fine, but not in the 76's league. Among the other Zins we drank that finished behind the 76 Cakebread were 06 Rosenblum Rockpile Road, 07 Ridge Lytton Springs, 07 and 09 Bella Lily Hill, 98 Gary Farrell Maple Vineyard, and an 05 Turley.

11 people tasted the 1969 along with six other BV Private Reserves - 1978, 1985, 1994, 1996, 2000, and 2007. Eight had the 69 as their top wine. Still has a pleasing/big taste and is reasonably full-bodied. Fruit still evident in bouquet and taste unlike lots of older wines. We did not decant this wine, but let it breathe in the bottle for slightly less than 30 min. Clearly this wine will not get any better and should be drunk now.
