Mellow. Subtle. Brilliant. A nose of sweet honey, with a touch of leather. Fresh and lively. A fabulous wine. Drinking beautifully now.

The 2017’s: We have been through 6 bottles of Gloria; 6 of 12 bottles of Saint Pierre; and now our first bottle of Leoville Barton.

2017 may be very approachable in it’s youth in Saint Julien, but it is not a troubled vintage at all. Enjoy!

At 31 years of age this is drinking beautifully. Seamless, succulent, wonderful. The whole gang just loved it.

Over two nights. Cherry on the nose; blackberry in the mouth. A lovely wine drinking well now. We had this wine and the 2009 Leoville Barton in successive weeks, and this was the superior wine at this time.

My last bottle alas. Absolutely incredible. With BBQ Flank Steak; hot, fresh bread; green salad. A noble wine to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary. Very, very special and at its peak. 🍷

Opened and let sit for 4 hours. With ravioli - not much experience with this region, but we did enjoy this. The basic Sottimano offering. Pleasant.

I’m no Barolo aficionado, but I bought some 2011 and 2013 Scavino’s at the insistence of a wine agent friend. Different than the Bordeaux, North and South Rhone, Burgundy, Beaujolais and Spanish that we usually drink, but delicious. Elegant. Leather and cherries in a delightful package. Yum! Ready to drink to our taste.

I bought 1 bottle each of the three La Las and this is the first one consumed. With BBQ Rib Eye steak. The wine and the steak were a perfect match. Deep, dark colour; attractive nose; wonderful long finish. Drinking well, but no doubt this has at least another 5-10 years of drinking pleasure ahead.

Had on successive nights with the 2000 Ducru Beaucaillou - Leoville Barton first night with BBQ Beef Tenderloin; Ducru on night 2 with BBQ hamburgers. Both awesome - with a slight preference for the Leoville. Drink or hold.

Gotta agree with Chopper - this was nasty. Opened my first bottle of 4 and it smelled and tasted terrible - not corked, but very woody and pruney. So pulled a second bottle - fresher but still lingering prune. Expected way better from Jadot. No.

Tried the second bottle on Day 2 - no better. Still have 2 bottles left and will wait a couple of years….but….

Have not tried yet, but Livingstone-Learmonth calls 2016 along with 2010, the vintages of the century (so far) in the Southern Rhone. I won’t be touching this until at least 2026. 🍷

Alas, all good things come to an end. My last bottle of 24 purchased long ago. As is tradition I had it with my brother in law with BBQ steak (and we also had the 2009 to compare). Brilliant, complex wine.

The bouquet filled the room on pouring; delicious, with a wonderfully long finish. Classic Bordeaux from a supposedly weak vintage.

Looking at our last tasting note and this wine is even better. A really very, very good Gigondas which carries it's 14.5% ABV with grace. We will be back in Provence in May 2022 and look forward to a visit.

The last time we saw a Mayacamas Chardonnay grape was in 2005 when we visited the winery and Bob Travers was crushing chardonnay grapes that day. Such a gentleman!

This IMHO was slightly over oaked and not as fresh as the glass or steel tank Chablis we have been drinking of late. I bought the Mayacamas Chardonnay 2017 / 2018 / 2019 for purely sentimental reasons.

Such is the way of wine!

Well....the last time I saw Mayacamas chardonnay grapes was when we visited the winery and Bob Travers was on the crush pad crushing chardonnay grapes (2005)...what a gentleman. This version of Mayacamas was IMHO over oaked and not as fresh as it should have been. But then we've been drinking mostly steel or glass tank Chablis which have a purity of fruit without much oak intervention. Too each his own. I've bought the 2017 / 2018 / 2019 Mayacamas Chardonnay for purely sentimental reason due to our contact with Bob Travers in the past. Totally irrational but such is the way of wine.

Alas...our last bottle. This was the epitome of a fine California Cabernet. Made in the old school way; understated, but built to age gracefully. This punched way above its weight - outstanding.
