Now this here is one pretty Pinot! I was almost decked with flowers and "rhubarb" right of the start. Delicate, but giving way to strawberry/cherry and licorice around the mid palate. These flavors dominated for a bit (quite a bit actually), before a return to accents of earth, straw, and "tea". The opener was really the highlight of this wine for me. Great nose. I think I may have finally found what I'm looking for in a Pinot!

...now I am getting red currant jelly - do this with duck!

Appearance: Deep garnet core with quite a bit of fine sediment. Plenty of legs that are fairly dense and slow moving (alcohol is 14%).

Nose: Very intense. Lots of complexity. Strawberry and raspberry swirling with milk chocolate. Ripe brandied or Maraschino cherries. Almond. Fennel/anise, sweet tobacco, and something earthy—forest floor or cedar.

Palate: Medium to full bodied and dry. Complexity remains—flavours vary wildly depending on food pairing (see below). Nicely balanced—medium-high tannins and acid. Bitter dark chocolate. Dark cherry. Finish lingers, especially with the forest/cedar notes.

Food pairing: Needs some time to breathe before consumption—decanting recommended. Pairs nicely with something earthy, rich, and umami—a porcini mushroom bordelaise sauce and pasta would be great. We had it with mushroom risotto. Avoid spicier dishes and opt for creamy sauces over tomato-based sauces. Also pairs nicely with chocolate—milk chocolate brings out pepper notes typical in Syrah as well as cherries.

I look forward to trying this again but today, it’s over the top and unbalanced. Too rich. Not enough acid to balance. Drink ice cold.

Notes of lychee and honey. Very pretty.

3/14/20, 6:57 AM - Thanks. I’ve got 2 more bottles (wine club). My wife makes a vinaigrette based salad with red onions, goats cheese, and peaches that I think would pair.

Medium brown red with pink edges. Intense nose of black plums, black currant, earth, thyme, leather and cedar box. Very alive. Delicious dry earthy black cherry flavours and a long textured grainy finish.

Not the Bordeaux wannabe a lot of vintages of this wine can be.

Strong showing from this wine. Very much alive and thriving at 20years of age. Definitely not what you would call a modern Cali cab, this is made in a very restrained and elegant fashion. Very good. No rush on this.

I'm a big fan of Servin so my expectations were high when I opened this one. To start with I was a little disappointed that Servin has changed to a screw top for this bottling, but not something I'm going to lose sleep over. The wine was fine but came across unbalanced to start. To their credit the wine seemed to find itself as time went on and it was allowed to open up. I grew to enjoy this wine as time went by and it seemed to balance itself out. It is still a very young wine and I popped and poured, so maybe it just needs a little more time at this stage.
  • Plusvini commented:

8/10/18, 7:11 PM - Drinking this and reading your comments. 3 of the last 4 French wines I opened were flawed. So bring on the screw cap! :)

  • Plusvini commented:

8/14/18, 6:32 PM - Well in truth, one of the three (a Bourgogne Blanc) was a menthol note that suggests bacteria. But I’d say we find 1 in 10 bottles are faulty.

  • Plusvini commented:

8/15/18, 4:38 PM - Totally agree. I can often detect the TCA in the wines I judge to be faulty. But for sure sometimes I can’t say for sure it’s TCA. Sometimes, there just no fruit. Call it bottle variation. But what is causing the variation? And I find expensive wines to be more suceptable than the cheap mass produced crap.

Coincidentally... I opened a 2013 Neal Family Cab tonight. Corked. Definitely. And Badly. Luckily I have more bottles. Second bottle is fine.

FWIW, most people don’t “score” a wine if they know it’s faulted. There’s a check box in the notes section for Faulted”.

Hope you get to try it again.

I really wanted to like this more. It's too young and 2 hours decanting was not enough. Beautiful red fruit and spice notes. Long and balanced. But there was an acetone note too that I didn't enjoy. Hopefully more age will integrate these flavours better.

Decanted over 6 hours. Tannins softened noticeably, becoming very fine but still tongue coating. Flavours became more apparent, dried cherry, leather and spice. Excellent.

This particular bottle seemed very closed even after an hour of decanting. It felt a little thinner than previous bottles. The nose wasn't really giving up much, and the oak and alcohol really poked through in an obtrusive way. Im not sure if it is in a sleepy phase cause I tried one last month that was much better. Possibly just an off bottle?
  • Plusvini commented:

Finally its easter holidays for me! This is evolving for every glass taken. From recent experience this needs time to open up completely - but a joy every sip, right from the start. I bought this in Paris 3 years ago for 85 euro - what a bargain! Will certainly gain in the near future! This wine still has a long way to go before reaching maturity, especially the recent disgorgements.

Very deep colour. Ripe, complex fruit and spice on the nose.
The palate was rich and very deep, showing complex dark fruits including blackberry and plums with plenty of spicy complexity. It evolved in the glass showing hints of chocolate and plenty of vanilla complexity. Tannins are already smooth but quietly muscular. Excellent balance and length. This is going to be a fantastic, long-lived RWT and certainly a worthy and more affordable alternative to Grange.
A small sample was retained and tasted next day. The nose was even richer and more forward and the fruit on the palate seemed softer and sweeter but no less rich or complex. Great length. A remarkable wine. 94+

Medium body, bright cherry red color. Elegant fresh red berries, wood and flowers aroma. Dominant cherry, spices and cedar wood palate, medium long finish. Still young and fresh, silky texture, complex and well balanced, lovely acidity, gentle tannins. Food friendly, best match is pasta with white mushrooms sauce. Serve 18º - 22º. Drink now while young and next five years, perhaps more.

Thought I had a good system. Looked at the wine list from the decent Raleigh restaurant on their web site the day before our visit and this wine looked like the best bet for CT ratings and reviews (and price). At the restaurant the wine was lacking in fruit with an astringent middle and finish--drinkable but just barely. Hoped it would improve on day two but was pretty much the same. Maybe poor treatment in shipping across country.

High end yes. Classy execution yes. Delicious definitely. But at 100$ Canadian I find it hard to say it's twice a good as many bottles at half the price. This should sit in your celllar for 5-6 years.
