Muted and confused. Less than a week after being shipped to me, it is possibly still in bottle shock. Fortunately, I have 10 more. Not planning to touch them for awhile. Hopefully they will come out of their shell!

Unusual blend between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Chardonnay is grown in sandy soils and is tart and austere; to balance, the sauvignon blanc is allowed to ripen. No malo, but 25% new oak.

The wine combines citrus and melon in a very unfamiliar way. I didn't buy any, but now that I'm looking back on it, I wish I did pick up some -- I'm kind of jonesing for it.

3/19/19, 9:56 AM - Agreed! I thought the whole lineup was delicious, particularly Origin.

Ridiculous texture and harmony. Expands through significant length.

Not good at all
  • alpha_ori commented:

4/10/18, 7:45 PM - Surely 88 is a better rating than a wine that is "not good at all" deserves? (I agree with your assessment, btw.)

2010 Coturri Winery Carignane Testa Vineyards Sonoma County
Always a toss up what's gonna show up in the glass with Coturri, but the 2010 Carignane delivered! Deep savory aromas of umami, olive tapenade, blackberry fruit if any. A touch of VA, but nothing too troubling. Vibrant acidity knits together the entire palate with tapenade, blackberries, plums and wet earth mingling beautifully. Fantastic wine of interest.

3/24/18, 6:40 PM - Your review very much sums up how I feel about this wine and Coturri in general.

Nose is tart berries, fennel fronds, and barnyard.

Palate is soft and almost silky up front, then consolidating into astringent red fruit, a touch of liqueur, licorice, tea, and tannin fine enough to be pleasant. Very balanced. Delicious.

In a great place; I can’t imagine it improving, but I haven’t had a lot of older Pegaus — maybe it will mutate into something else that is also great?

I am reading the other tasting notes with some fascination. I bought a case of this wine 3 years ago and so far have had 7 of them. Things that other people have reported that I have not experienced: pruniness, stewiness, flacidity, brettiness, jamminess, disjointedness. Enough people are reporting these things that I am sure they are not flights of fancy. But these reports are definitely in the minority, and they don't reflect my experience. For me, this wine is focused, nuanced, balanced, and delicious. Would definitely buy again.

12/12/17, 4:42 PM - Thanks for your input, walkerjfw, and for reminding me about the commonly-reported closed phase in many CdPs. I'm mulling over buying another case of this or something similar, and I should probably restrict my search to wines around this age.

Likely corked

4/12/17, 6:50 PM - Sounds like it. Perhaps use the "corked" rating instead of a numerical one? That way it doesn't get rolled up into the aggregate.

Rich fruit, soy sauce, a bit of acid on the finish...definitely one of my favorite CdP houses. I prefer the strong mineral presence in the '07 vintage, but this is still quite delicious. As it opens up, the savory notes become more prominent and the acids less so; I'm hard pressed to say which profile I like more. This is one of those wines that, when I drink it, I think: I must go here, to this part of the world, and see what it is really like.

Comes on soft and lush, with a bit of delicious juice and tarragon and but as it swirls around the mid-palate, it somehow draws together into a nice snap of acid and concentration just before smoothing out into a nice drawn out finish.

It's almost like watching a movie in which a glass of wine spills and breaks, but in reverse -- the drops gathering together into rivulets, shards leaping back together and fusing, and right at the end, the whole glass leaps up back to the table and some six-year-old with a toy rifle runs offscreen backwards.
  • alpha_ori commented:

1/15/15, 10:09 AM - Maybe it was just the effect of the previously consumed bottle of wine!

  • alpha_ori commented:

I usually only buy the Seavey Cab but I thought I would give the Carvina a try. I had this at the winery last year and it was okay and I thought why not so in this years shipment I ordered a few. It is a mid weight decent cab. Nothing to write home about and does not compare to the vin 29 cru which is around the same price point. A touch of fruit and decanting didn't really help much. Tannins were definitely present but I do love black lush fruit and this didn't deliver. Too rounded and soft for me.

These Bedrock Heritage wines are such beautiful conundrums. Right now, this one is just sheets of fruit, each layer different than the last. It's 5 different Zinfandels in one. I cant imagine what it will be like as it ages, but it's quite fascinating now.

Nose is intensely floral and perfumed. (From Viognier, I assume.) It smells like a wine that I would not like, as I do not like a lot of florality in my wines. And the first half second of the palate I'm unsure about, too, frankly. Then it makes this sharp right turn into OMG. Soft, but slightly viscous, but smooth, but just a little spicy, no single element of this wine overwhelms. This is not normally what I want in a Syrah, but I'm into it. This is my first Reynvaan, and I have to say, I'm intrigued.

Very dark red, almost black. I was tempted to liken this to the color of a saturated Syrah but the '08 Campofiorin Oro from Masi doesn't have that purple hue, more like the darkest beet you've ever seen. Great nose here of complex spices and a whisper of tar. The grapes were dried on mats before being crushed to allow some of the water to evaporate from each grape, thus intensifying the flavor of the wine. A method known as passito. I've been to Masi and seen this. It's not done in the sun as I imagined but indoors with fans spinning away and every window open to allow the moisture to escape. I think I remember they even had hatches on the roof that open. When I worked for Fedex I delivered to a company in Davenport that produced concrete, north of Santa Cruz, called RMC Lonestar and that's the pneumonic I use to help me remember the three grapes that go into a lot of the wines in Veneto; Rondinella, Molinara, and Corvina. The palate is dense with a fantastic balance of fruit, acid, and a touch of leather. The Masi doesn't come across as heavy despite the density and alcohol (14%) and I think we have the high acidity to thank for that, and Masi talent as well. I have no idea how this will age but my best guess is two things will happen. The fruit will turn pruney and remain in the wine or will just fade just as a Bordeaux ages leaving us with something akin to an old leather belt. Either way I suggest drinking this by 2023.

How this got 95 pts from WS is beyond me. It's decent and very juicy but just lacking in complexity. It's just okay.
  • alpha_ori commented:

2/19/14, 7:41 PM - Taste it over 2 days -- I think what you taste will change several times. This wine is soooo not ready to drink yet, and it's definitely complex. Whether or not it will all knit together is another matter, of course, but we won't know for quite awhile.

This is not the type of wine that I normally drink, but I'll say this -- this wine is incredibly complex. Each sip has a different profile, different flavors. Quite the experience.

This is a fascinating wine. Dusky earth on the nose. Smooth texture, but not soft -- good acid, even at this age. Italianate in this way. Good minerality. Difficult to pin down the fruit in this -- that's one of the things that makes this wine so intriguing. Some dried cranberry, some sour cherry...can't put my finger on it. I really like this, though. I have two more bottles. I wish I had 8.
  • alpha_ori commented:

4/28/13, 7:55 AM - I popped and poured. I'll try a decant next time -- I think the nose might have settled a bit if I had.
