2011 Bernard Magrez Domaine Excelcio Guerrouane Red Rhone Blend
8/18/2017 - dsamuel Likes this wine:
90 points
Medium garnet color. Medium(+) aromas of black cherry and tobacco. Medium palate of black fruit with moderate(+) tannins, fairly well integrated. This is a nice wine, but tannins still dominating in my opinion. Will prob hold another couple yrs before opening again.

2013 Pax Syrah Griffin's Lair Sonoma Coast
9/2/2021 - dsamuel Likes this wine:
93 points
Deep purple color with moderate rim clearing
Medium plus aromas of blueberry and black fruit - cough syrup along with classic smoked meat and purple floral secondaries
Medium plus body with palate of red/ blue fruit and bacon with green notes, presumably stem inclusion
Medium acid and medium plus tannins primarily down the tongue with medium alcohol and really nice length
Dry glass aromas of classic Syrah - blueberry, smoke and meat
Really fine example of New World Syrah which could easily be mistaken for riper vintage Cote Rotie in my opinion - very classy
Drink now or hold another 3-5 yrs

2017 El Enemigo Chardonnay Mendoza

Pale lemon color - clear
Medium plus aromas of apples/ yellow flowers with hint of minerality and moderate new oak aromas/ butter
Medium palate of ripe apples/ butter - quite dull actually
Medium acidity with medium plus alcohol which throws this off balance and medium length
I find this to be a stereotypical New World oaked Chardonnay with not much to offer despite the price - not a fan
Appears soundly made, just definitely not my style

11/27/20, 6:54 PM - It is quite difficult to objectively taste a wine without bias based on method/ wine style - I realize this and continually battle this internally

2010 François Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots Pinot Noir
7/27/2020 - dsamuel Likes this wine:
92 points
Pale ruby color with mild bricking
Medium plus aromas of cranberry/ red cherry and dried strawberry with intoxicating secondary dry herbs/ mushroom/ forest floor and turned earth
Medium palate of ripe cherry with dried herbs and fresh mushroom and black tea
Medium tannins with medium plus acidity and medium finish
Lighter than expected for Pommard but complex and beautiful - actually quite a steal for $30
Would drink now

2012 Joseph Dorbon Arbois Vieilles Vignes "Cuvée des Moyne" Chardonnay Blend, Chardonnay

Dark gold/ amber in color
Medium aromas of fresh red apple/ applesauce
Nice palate of apples with oxidative qualities as expected
Palate rather simple and appears out of synch - medium/ medium plus acidity and medium length which does appear to drop off suddenly
Nicely made typical Jura - I have come to the conclusion again that, although enjoyable, I don't particularly have the attraction for Chardonnay made in this method and IMO the Savignin grape typically shows much more character. I keep buying these nonetheless but I think with rare exception I prefer the Savignin.

9/5/19, 5:42 PM - I do love the Labet Chardonnays in particular which are topped off, which I find some of the best examples of the varietal. Just not too fond of those made in the classic style
