Last tasted over 15 years ago and consistently wonderful while aging, this was in surprisingly wonderful shape. Strong red-fruit notes, tannin growing over time, and a mature-but-not-old feel: a lovely mix of its early tannic features and its later "fruit bomb" elements. Amazingly, this was still drinkable on the second night (a rare occurrence for me).

Over 25 years ago I purchased a complete flight of 1977 ports, which have been buried in the back of my cellar since then. I finally began my tasting with this bottle, because its cork was in the worst shape - wax cap broken and cork completely saturated. Much to my pleasure and surprise, this bottle was wonderful - accurately described by Electric Palate (9/2021 review) except more full-bodied than I normally expect from a port of this age. It is certainly ready for drinking, but I would be in no hurry to drink these if you still have them.

Delicious young wine, without the complexity that would earn a higher score. I suspect this needs a few more years. Paired nicely with cheese souffle.

An imperfect experience. Cork was in good shape and decanted for 45 minutes - mature bordeaux style nose without complexity - paired nicely with braised short ribs, but over the course of a 90-minute tasting never really settled into the wine I was expecting. Still quite enjoyable but a harsh end-note betrayed most of the tasting.

Rather a difficult bottle to rate, since it was constantly evolving during the 2 hours meal - may possibly have bad a cork problem since cork was unusually saturated. The bottle was decanted at the start of the meal - only a small amount of sediment (it has been stored upright for the prior week). Nose never fully developed for me. First taste was unpleasantly acidic, but after 45 minutes it began to evolve through a series of stages with varying degrees of dark red/black fruit and warm-but-fully-resolved tannins, finally declining to another unappealing state. Too strong for my fish course but nicely balanced for my lamb course.

Decanted for an hour prior to enjoying with my Thanksgiving dinner (conventional turkey and sides). Medium bodies with wonderful red fruit, moderate-but-clearly-defined acidity and confidently-persuasive tannins - definitely more powerful than many other pinots, but wonderfully seamless and tasty. Likely deserves a higher rating, but I was already under the influence of two previous wines and am choosing to be conservative. With proper decanting it is a gorgeous wine to drink now - likely already at its plateau - but there is no rush. Great for read meats and game, but likely too strong for poultry

Having finished my 1985 Veuve, I was looking forward to my first taste of this 1996 Grande Dame. It has, like its brethren, aged into a champagne with a beautiful Sherry-like character - more restrained than the 1985 vintage at this age, which makes it easier to pair with food (still worked nicely for caviar but was too sweet to pair properly with scallop ceviche). It would have been a perfect wine for cheese! A delicious wine that is currently in-between its early phase and its later-more-decadent phase (for which it should last another 10+ years). I would not hesitate to let sit for another 2-3 years if you like the sherry-like phase, but otherwise drink up fast.

Definitely showing its age with soapy notes and dark amber color (hence the low rating) - but still a striking sweet swine with piercing citrus (apricot?) tones - a desert wine that continues to hold its own against almost any dessert pairing.

I was concerned from other posts whether this was getting old- but it tasted quite fresh with medium-light body, red fruit and nice acid - only the tiniest edge of iodine in the aftertaste suggesting its age. Very nice pairing with a spicy lamb tagine.

Matches other reviews In appearance - unctuous maple syrup appearance. Strong raisin/quince front with citric-peel background. I see all of the points raised by other reviews but strikes me as “trying-too-hard” without proper balance.

Enjoyable mature bordeaux with red fruit forward taste and nice tannin structure when swirled in mouth. Would have given higher Marks but somewhat uni-dimensional for a mature bordeaux. Paired very nicely with venison.

With great reluctance I opened my last bottle of this wonderful wine tonight. Soft-sweet sherry notes with a citric (mandarin?) undertone. Absolutely delicious, but hard to pair. We drank with caviar and crab raviolis but it is so succulent that a cheese course might have been a better match. Probably should rate higher but I will be conservative - jealous of anyone who still has more in their cellar.

Showing its age with a hint of soap in back end and loss of fruit or n the front end, but still possesses enough sweetness to stand up to a desert offset by a beautiful citric sharpness

Mouthful of red fruits with firm tannins - enjoyable (yum) but lacking complexity. Turns harsh after 75 minutes in glass so nearing end of life

By accident did not have the chance to taste this until 2 hours after the pour but still had very good fruit, light tannins and good mouthfeel. Presented as still youthful, possibly rating higher next time.
