Drink really nice right now. Fruit forward, soft & velvety tannins. Wish I had more than one bottle left.

A nice wine from a fine vintage. A little over the top on the fruit, but good complexity. Perhaps a bit chunky & awkward in style, but has the life left in it for things to settle down in 3 to 5 years. Hold.

Cherry fruit bomb. Nothing subdued about this juice.

As soon as the cork was pulled, a huge waft of Cabernet fruit hit my nose. Brick red color, showing this grape juice’s age. Big nose filled with Cabernet, black cherries, and a hint of cocoa. The fruit continues forward on the attack, with the cocoa becoming more pronounced during the evolution. Velvety tannins, well integrated, coat the mouth. An extended finish, during which the subtleties of the fruit emerge. Probably close to its peak, but should drink nicely for another 3 to 5 years.

Pale straw color. Pineapple and tropical fruit on the nose. Pineapple and citrus flavors, with a hint of green apple. Just a slight hint of burnt oak, not at all overdone. Luscious mouthfeel, nuanced acidity, and a lingering finish.

Some seepage evident when I cut the capsule, but the cork came out intact. Purple, not deep, but not pale, color. Nose filled with dark cherry and black plum. Fruit bursts forward on the attack, with the stone fruit carrying through, accompanied by an explosion of perfectly ripe blackberries. The tannins take a moment to kick in, but when they do they are firm and structured. Fruit fades through the lingering finish, but the velvety mouthfeel remains persistent. Probably a bit past its peak, but drinking nicely. Don’t bother holding on to this much longer

Cork came out perfectly intact, showing no seepage whatsoever. Red/brick red color, showing some signs of age around the edges. A good bit of oak, backed by saddle leather and a hint of Cabernet fruit, on the nose. Very firm tannins on the attack, with earth, Rutherford dust, leather, and bitter chocolate flavors evolving through the finish. Not much fruit left here, but perhaps it will open up with a few hours in the decanter. Likely on its last legs, so drink up.

Deep, dark, dense, purple color, showing ever so slight a hint of age around the edges. Big nose, bursting with Cabernet fruit. Restrained on the attack, but then explodes with dark stone fruit, blackberries, and a hint of blueberry through the evolution. Firm, but not biting, tannins, are well integrated and give a strong backbone. Long, lingering finish. Not at its peak yet, but getting there.

2001 Château d'Armailhac Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)

Brick red in color, showing some age. Classic Pauillac nose, though rather subdued. Very soft on the attack, with barely noticeable tannins. Some fruit, perhaps plum and cherry, tris to come through, but never fully evolves. Not much going on with the finish, as the essence of the wine exits rapidly.

Brick red color, showing very little age around the edges. Not a big nose, but what is there is classic Cabernet fruit. Smooth and supple on the attack, quite dry, with firm velvety tannins embracing the tongue. Classic Cabernet fruit persists through to the lingering finish, but the wine doesn’t really evolve much. Certainly not dead, yet, but on the downside of its life. Quite nice still, but not the same showing as in the past.

Decanted for two hours. Deep brick-red color. Big Cabernet fruit on the nose, with oak and black stone fruit wafting through. Fairly smooth on the attack, no doubt from the decanting, with somewhat awkward tannins enveloping the mouth. Black cherry & black plum are the predominate flavors, with hints of saddle leather and bittersweet chocolate. While this wine seems to want to evolve in the mouth, the finish is short lived. Another disappointing effort from a consistently disappointing producer.

Pale straw color, with good clarity. Tropical fruit dominates the nose, with strong notes of pineapple and moderate oak. Crisp acidity quickly developes in the mouth, with the pineapple, backed by the oak, being the predominate flavors evolving. Long and lingering finish. NOt a terrible effort by the winery, but at the same time, not their best.

Deep purple/brick red color. Nose of leather, coffee, and caramel. Big fruit on the attack, with lots of black plums, cherries, and blackberries coming through, with dark chocolate rounding out the edges. The tannins have nicely integrated, providing a velvety mouthfeel. A long, lingering finish, that just keeps going. Drinking exceptionally well for a 21 year old cab, lending further evidence that 1997 was a truly great year for California cabs. Could easily last another five years, but when it’s drinking this great right now, I see little reason to wait. Will certainly go well with tonight’s ribeye.

Brick-red color, definitely starting to show some age around the edges. Nose of earth and ripe plums. Soft on the attack, with soft & velvety tannins embracing the sides of the tongue. Leather, coffee, and bittersweet chocolate are the dominate tastes, with hints of plum sneaking through a long and evolving finish. This is a classic Mondavi cab. Drink up.

This took a couple of hours to open up. Color, not particularly deep, is tending towards brick red and showing some age along the edges. Nose of earth & leather, with a hint of tobacco. The tannin that remains is soft and gives a velvety mouthfeel. The the fruit that remains is black plum and cherry, with dominant flavors being cocoa, coffee, and earth. A rather disappointing effort from a producer that generally provides outstanding results. No point in holding onto this any longer.

Deep purple color, not showing the slightest signs of age around the edges yet. Big nose of ripe plums and cherries. Fruit explodes in the mouth, primarily cherries and plums, but some strawberries and blackberries sneaking in around the backside. Tannins are starting to mellow out, though still provide a firm backbone. Velvety mouthfeel on the lingering finish. Drinking fabulously right now, but still has another 5 to 10 years ahead of it.

I’m always cautious when pulling a cork on an older bottle such as this, but to my surprise it was in near-perfect condition, showing very little signs of seepage. The color is deep & dark brick red, showing some age around the edges. There is a pronounce oakiness in the nose, with hints of anise and tobacco. The tannins are remarkably firm, yet there is a great velvety quality in the mouthfeel. Cocoa and coffee, cradled in ripe black plum & black cherries, evolve through a long and luxurious finish. Drinking really nicely right now, with another three to five years of good life left before the decline sets in. One of Mondavi’s finest cabs!

Drinking quite nicely right now. A good deal of blackberries, black cherries, rounded out by a nice helping of dark chocolate. Firm, though far from overbearing, tannins evolve through the finish. Has at least five more years of life.

For the price, this is hard to beat. Drinking very nicely now, with well integrated, velvety tannins. However, the fruit is starting to wane a bit and anyvremainkng bottles should be drunk up in the next six months.
