cork slightly depressed but in good condition overall. not sure if this cork depression had any impact on the wine but i didnt find this wine impressive. way over its prime IMO. still some juice and tannin left but not integrated well. should have drank it 3-5 years ago.

Let's be honest here, there is no way you would ever pick this wine out as a Pinot Noir in a blind tasting, even when young, so we were not sure where it would be as it aged; but it is a tasty non-descript red at this age.
  • owr commented:

3/29/20, 7:50 AM - KillerJones - yes it did have the lux cap - looks good but this wine also has Zin and Syrah in it, not just Pinot Noir.

Deep maroon with lots of big body like other 2010's but I found the level of oak to be off putting. I practically felt I was chewing oak chips. Smoothish finish but again the oak was overpowering. I have 2 others so will wait and see what a bit of age does to it. Not to my taste.

Looks like cherry pop.

Tastes remarkably good for the price
  • owr commented:

12/30/16, 3:45 AM - JMCMCHI - you wrote that it was good for the price and then gave the wine an 83 - to me that's a really bad score. Care to elaborate?

8/9/16, 2:04 PM - H20 You missed a beauty bottle by not ageing it a bit - I aged it too long but I think the sweet spot for this bottle was somewhere between when you opened it and when I did.

Currants and pepper on the nose. Typical aussie green on the palate with a medium finish. Nothing Spectacular.
  • owr commented:

8/9/16, 1:35 PM - Lesterkwong, with all due respect, there is nothing "green" about Aussie wines - over ripe, over extracted, over oaked, maybe but not green - "green" means under-ripe and the Aussies have no problem getting fruit ripe.

Sort of losing it now, but you can still find what we're talking about: nice stuffing and great French-your-mouth-feel at first -- sweet sediments w/ that stained and blue flavor. Totally nice ideas from a few years earlier. Then, nothing to offer secondarily and didn't finish the taste.
  • owr commented:

3/22/16, 10:16 AM - Did you notice the closure - plastic or natural cork?

On a scale of 50-100 with 75-79 being average, there is no way this wine could be considered anything but below average. It is reductive, monolithic, jammy, over extracted, and completely lacking in acid balance. This is cheesecake. This is Pamela Anderson, and a flabby version at that. I suppose I don't drink enough California wine but this seems to me to be just plain 'no good'. This resembles a northern Rhone Syrah the way a Prius resembles a Lamborghini.

This is a special bottling of Thalassitis with higher levels of sulfites being added than on the normal label.
I like it even more than last time a couple of years ago.
Intense mineral, petrol and nutty notes with floral honey notes along with citrus fruit. Very deep and intense flavor, full body and long finish. This is how I expect a moderately aged Santorini to be..
  • owr commented:

8/3/15, 2:55 PM - Stefano's ... Did you notice if the wine had plastic cork or not?

  • owr commented:

8/12/15, 8:03 AM - If it is at your fingertips ... or can be found out easily - that would be great. Mine has a plastic top and I did not have the experience you did with the wine (not even close) and I suspect it is the "cork" oxidized the wine. I am also a year later opening mine then yours.

  • owr commented:

8/21/15, 3:35 AM - Stefanos ... I am a wine writer by trade - I know the difference between oxidized and quirky funk due to age. Thanks for looking into this - I still have one bottle left so I will re-evaluate it. Cheers

Really pretty awful. I took three sips and poured the rest out.

Side note: There is a flavor that most Chilean cabs share; I'm not sure what it is. Maybe tobacco, tar, or barnyard... In moderation, I really think it's a nice flavor and can add some complexity. It was a huge presence in this bottle.
  • owr commented:

6/16/15, 7:05 PM - I would say you got a corked bottle ...the one I had today (June 16, 2015) was a great older vintage Cab Sauv.

Nose of cherry and dark fruits. Well balanced with a nice warm and long finish. Pallets cherry, darks fruits and a small amount a strawberry. Nice and earthy.

McManis Family Vineyards - compared to Shiraz of same price
This is designed to be a fresh, fruity, easy drinking wine, crystal clear in color and very clean. The flavors are very fresh and fruity on the nose – black currant, black fruit, blue fruit and some vanilla. On the palate, clear, bright, fresh fruity black berries and a medium long finish with very fresh pronounced fruit. A New World wine, affordable and of good quality.
  • owr commented:

3/27/15, 10:54 AM - Please explain how a red wine can be "crystal clear"?

This might be one of the worst wines I've had in a very long time. Sour & generally nasty. Did not appear corked (synthetic cork) so not sure what the issue was.
  • owr commented:

7/15/14, 11:54 AM - Problem is always synthetic cork ... it's so hit and miss but with more miss than hit, especially when it comes to an aged bottle. Worse closure even invented.

This was interesting in that I can't seem to describe what I am smelling and tasting. I am definitely picking up some hints of strawberries. Much sweeter than I expected. It is so complex, I want to score it higher, but there is just something missing.

Nice. Crisp, some vanilla and citrus. Good on its own and had with vodka pasta. Deserving of its recent competition award.
  • owr commented:

If ever a wine was perfect for a meal this was the wine and steak and potatoes was the meal ... Seems like a simple meal to pair, but the wine found a harmony with what was on the plate. The nose was leathery, spicy with cassis and blackberry notes ... the palate overwhelmed at first but then toned itself back (within 15 minutes) and began offering up exactly what was needed. Started with a big spice and hits of pepper but then turned into a lovely smooth wine that brought out the dark fruit and cocoa all lined with just the right amount of spice ... this was a very enjoyable wine with great flavours. Through all the bad publicity he gets Michel Rolland seems to know what he is doing. I also see I have a bottle of the 2003 vintage of this wine, I'll have to try it in the next few weeks to see if it too has got the stuffing or if it's falling apart. For now, this 2006 is the bomb - a great wine that has hit it's stride for a big meaty meal.
  • owr commented:

1/19/13, 4:08 AM - I have to admit I did not ... I was going to open a 2004 Masi Campofiorin tonight but now that I read that note it might be interesting to pull out the Siete 2003 ... ask me again in a week - otherwise a note should appear shortly.

Disappointing. I have enjoyed this wine in the past, but this bottle lacked appeal. It was just tannins and a bit of acid, no berries or anything else I enjoy.
  • owr commented:

9/14/12, 4:51 PM - Sounds like you had a faulty bottle ... i just had a bottle and it was delicious. Though it is sealed with a plastic cork, so i see bottles with lots of variation, unfortunately.
