What a pleasant surprise! New world power with an old world restraint. There's some salami, warmth, feeling and aromatics of a wool sweater, it is fruity, rather juicy, forward, but not overdone. Highly recommended!

Disgorged in 2002, from magnum it was very fresh and complex, but I think that it can be kept further for optimal development.

1/6/19, 8:06 AM - Hi, for the newer bottles you should look at the cork, there's a code. Mine was 20C if I rememeber correctly, so you should change the order of the numbers, which turns out to be 02. And ABCD letters are the quarters of the year with A being the first quarter. Hope this helps.

Significant bricking has us all worried, but the wine is fresh, vibrant, muscular, and deep. Old school. Low alcohol at 13% meant we drank the entire bottle without realizing it. Great stuff, and if you've got a well cellared bottled, will provide great drinking pleasure right now.
  • AV2012 commented:

1/16/18, 12:07 AM - It was one of the first modern wines in Rioja. It is interesting how they all become more classic as the time goes by. Lower alcohol also helps. In some 20-30 years they all become classics.

From a magnum it was gorgeous. Intense, pronounced, fresh, but also had this mellowness of a mature champagne.
  • AV2012 commented:

12/20/17, 1:37 AM - I think it will be fine either way, it depends on your preferences - if you like your champagne even more mellow, age it for a couple of years, if you like it fresher, open it sooner. It wasn't going downhill any time soon as far as I could tell.

Base 2009, disg.2014.
At this point one can feel quite a big influence of black grapes. It is more forward than magnum we had alongside. There's rye bread and some raisins, it is distinctly smoky, quite ripe and brooding.
  • AV2012 commented:

    12/18/17, 4:25 AM - Hi, Slimes!
In fact I liked it at all formats and disgorgements as they hold their consistent style throughout them.
From this last tasting, we saw, that the vintage 2008 was a bit fresher due to its naturally high acidity, 2009 was riper and suitable for earlier consumption.
Often a post-disgorgement time plays a more signifficant role than base year or disgorgement date. The longer you cellar them, the more they develop. But they also become more similar if you compare them with their neighbouring base years/disgorgements.

Disgorged January 2015. Decanted as recommended by Florian Lauer. Quite complex, showing a bit of remaining youth and more of maturity as the wine opens up in the big glass. Fine balance of highish acidity and midpalate sweetness. The mousse fades fairly quickly and the finish is somewhat short. Nevertheless very interesting and enjoyable.

Originally "born" in Bodegas Domecq this is an impressive amontillado that arrived to the hands of Osborne after the unfortunate disappearance of Domecq. This VORS has a beautiful dark amber color and reflects both the wonderful expression of a wine born under biological ageing and also the expression of a wine that has experienced a prolonged oxidative ageing. Compared to a younger amontillado it shows more concentration, so we could find some more alcohol, density and tears. Still we find pungent touches, of course, but we also find aromas that remind us used staves and hints of exotic species -including turmeric and even curry-, notes of lacquer, the varnish from old furniture and notes of orange peels. All of these aromas give volume and depth, and characterise the definition of this wine. In the mouth, I should highlight its bitter touches, extremely dry character -it’s sharp like a katana-, its definition, length and depth, and especially its extreme complexity.

Beautiful clear ruby in the bottle, but it didn't survive the journey and subsequent decant — very finely muddy and almost completely opaque. Nose is a bit muddy and diffuse but still gives a good account of what it should have been. The palate however, is a muddy mess. Such a shame as there's clearly a lovely wine underneath the sludge.
  • AV2012 commented:

4/19/16, 1:47 AM - I have also learned the hard way to decant the bottle at home in advance or ship it well beforehand when dealing with older wines. Such a pity has it been to pour a muddy wine which originally had a beatuful clear colour.

My tasting mates placed it in the seventies. Funny.
Nothing will be the same.

  • AV2012 commented:

1/6/16, 4:18 AM - Happy New Year to You too, Harley1199!

From what I remember, the colour of the wine I opened was also rather young (more like from 60s-70s), it had quite a deep crimson-garnet colour with brickish hues, definetely not as brown as, say, Riscal 1938 that I opened alongside. Riscal 1938 seemed 20 y. older than Paternina 1928 on every aspect - colour, nose, palate. Only the short finish might have given me the clue as to the real age of this bottle.

    Cheers!

Domaine de Montille dinner - Confrerie des Chevalier du Tastevin, Singapore (Harbour Grill, Hilton Hotel): Not a bad Chardonnay as Chardonnays go. Not even a bad Burg - but just lacking in Chablis character. Sure, there was a chalky minerality and some stones on the nose, but that was laced through with tons of ripe notes - sweet lemons, honey, honeysuckle, toasty flavours and, with some time in the glass, the slightest hint of premox with dried apricots and peaches showing up. The palate showed the warm wash of alcohol from the attack, along with ripe red apples and some iodine notes. Good acidity for a 2006, but a little disjointed at first, with a some tartness sticking out awkwardly. With time, the wine came into balance, and showed better, with some gunpowder and mineral and bready tones moving into a satisying finish. Lacks interest and typicity though.
  • AV2012 commented:

Still special, but not as sensational as the first bottle I had had. Both disgored Feb, 2014.
