This is about as close to perfection as it gets. I've been lucky enough to have this wine three times and glad I still have one more in the cellar. This has the symmetry and harmony of the 1989 Haut Brion, but the punch you in the face nose of the 1990 vintage that I could smell all night long. For my palate, the '90 vintage in the left bank is better than '82 and '89. This '90 HB is rockin'!

Bien que déjà goûté il y a quelques années à 2 reprises,, cette bouteille m’a cette fois mis une grosse claque : nez évolué de chardonnay, sur le beurre frais, les fruits jaunes, un petit côté Chablisien iodé…
Sa couleur dorée, mais encore bien brillante, laisse supposer une belle acidité : et c’est le cas, avec une tension hors-pair, ciselée, pointue, qui réveille les papilles. Après la rondeur du millésime, la mineralité prends le dessus, c’est superbe.
Grand vin, Grand Bourgogne blanc qui pourrait côtoyer des grands crus de la côte de Beaune sans aucun complexe!

Ouvert et dégusté après 45 min, robe grenat moyen avec un disque plus aqueux.
Le nez est encore un peu réticent mais offre de jolies effluves de pétales de rose, d'épices douces, de fer et de griottes.
La bouche est vigoureuse mais harmonieuse, le vin est moyennement riche, plutôt subtil avec un agréable petit goût végétal, les tanins sont fondus et la finale est longue.
Elle s'est même allongée durant les 2 heures de consommation, ce qui me fait penser que le vin est au début de son plateau de maturité.
J'ai bien aimé ce vin traditionnel.

In my experience, Vega Sicilia takes some years to settle in. (I had an 03 a few years ago that probably needs about 7-10 years...) The wine drinks forever, the oldest vintage I have had is the 58 and it was going strong. I share this as the 94 seems to be at the front end of its drinking window. A great showing on this evening, should go for decades from here. Worth opening one now. The decant is a must at this point!

medium aged red color, bricked rim, spicy aged cassis nose, bell pepper notes, on the palate an aged savory cherry fruit, a bit dry on the finish, this is my first encounter with the 1985 Latour and while I know it does not enjoy the reputation of Margaux or Mouton- I think this particular bottle was mildly compromised (perhaps light heat damage many years ago), I say this because of the advanced age of the fruit relative to expectations and the slight cracking on the finish, over time it opened and improved nicely proving even this needs several hours in decanter, in the end a lovely and understated Latour- like the 1989- that I would like to revisit again in the hopes there are better bottles out there.

Une bouteille différente de celle bue il y a 6 mois...
Ouverte 1 heure avant dégustation.
Robe prune, grenat. Le nez est moins expressif ce soir, cassis, graphite, très primaire encore. La bouche offre davantage d'éclat, complexité et finesse sont présentes, les tanins sont bien intégrés et la finale est de belle longueur.
Très beau vin vin qui devrait encore s'épanouir durant ces 8-12 prochaines années.

Classic left bank flavours at its peak. Silky texture, good balance. Joyful to drink. Medium+ length. Potential for at least another decade. 91-92

Passé en carafe par notre hôte durant 45 minutes, il a été servi juste après la Gravette 2014...intéressant.
Encore 20 minutes dans le verre et il s’est révélé de manière fantastique.
Arômes de cassis et de violette au nez puis une précision impressionnante en bouche, complexe et raffiné. Superbe longueur.
Devrait encore prendre de l’ampleur sur les 5 prochaines années.

From a perfect bottle coming from bonded storage. Having been disappointed 2 times in a row with corked bottles this all time favourite of mine was very good this time but unfortunately not able to reach the stratospheric heights I have seen it hit. Consumed after a DRC Richebourg 1999 and paired with cheeses it had a wonderful mature Bordeaux nose that showed slightly more barnyard than I personally have a preference for. Then again coming off the nose of the Richebourg was a tough act to follow. The plate showed a tad more tannic than other bottles I have had and it felt that possibly the fruit was not quite as sweet here with more cedar and leather and possibly the bottle would have benefited from some additional time in decanter to "relax". There was however no denying of this wines quality and it was enjoyed and consumed rather quickly around the table.

Clear, deep ruby color. Clean, medium intense, youthful and deep nose with lots of oak, caramel and some animal notes.
Dry, medium+ acidity, high, not yet well integrated tannin. Some cherries, other berries, lots of oak, animal notes, a bit rustic. Way too young. Compared to the other Burgundies I had this night, I can’t understand the high ratings. And even in comparison with the Donatsch and Huber we had, this wine lost. Certainly, a good Pinot, but IMHO heavily overpriced. Will it improve? Certainly, but I doubt it will be great. 89-90+

Ja, es ist kein Pappenstiel den man für diesen Wein auf den Tisch legen muss aber eine ist klar: der Wein ist fantastisch! In seiner Ausgewogenheit, geradezu jugendlicher Frische und geschmacklichen Subtilität einfach brilliant. Kraftvoll ohne Dick zu sein, trotz seiner Zartheit eine wunderolle Intensität und obschon der 28 Jahre, die er auf dem Buckel hat, Frucht wie aus einem Paradiesgarten, obwohl sie sich nicht in der Vordergrund spielt. Ah the magical perfumed nose of Musigny... but hold on, isn't this a Chateauneuf du Pape?! And so goes yet another enigmatic, somewhat contradictory encounter with Rayas, which has folks (including myself) coughing up alarming amounts of cash for just a few gulps of an obscure wine from a small corner estate in the southern Rhone that reportedly leaves its cellars in appalling conditions. (Having tried to replicate this with my home study, I can confirm that mess does not necessarily produce genius, so the Reynaud family secret may lie elsewhere.) Moving past the nose into the palate, the dark clouds of Grenache start to appear on the otherwise bright pink strawberry horizon. After two hours in decanter, these clouds turn into a veritable black storm of juicy, savory berry, mint and overripe pineapple flavors. At this point, any illusion that we are still lying in some flower meadow outside Chambolle is swiftly dispelled by the sweet and somewhat fiery 14% alcohol. If this note is incoherent and unintelligible, said alcohol bears full responsibility.

I will refrain from rating it and describing the wine as I don’t believe an hour’s decant is enough. I think this wine needs at least a couple of hours in the decanter to properly aerate and show off its capabilities and will do that for my next bottles.

Not sure this bottle was correct, but drunk alongside the 19909 (which also wasn't a good bottle) it re-enforced my 1989 preference. There is much more structure and freshness in the 1989 and for my palate it is improving every year whilst the 1990 has plateaued... albeit at a very high level!

Fit for a wine loving Groundhog: Bordeaux back to 1970, by way of a 1982 trio (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): The second of three 1982s in this most amazing flight, and we were very lucky to have such a great bottle! Possibly "better" than Leoville Poyferre in terms of superior concentration and more youthful tannin. Here the "Poor Man's Mouton" is turned on its head and one could say that Mouton is the "Rich Man's Lynch Bages". The aromas are sheer perfume, all in focus, crisp and fresh, with a youthful palate that puts some more recent vintages that are on faster aging tracks to shame. Bravo!
