Fresh, aromatic, complex. Summer fruits with nuts and wax in the background -- but that's just the beginning. If this is so good, how heavenly do Tondonia Reserva and Gran Reserva must be?!

Light lemon colour. Somewhat closed on the nose, but hints of green apple, white peach, lemon, gooseberries, honeysuckle, jasmine and minerals. Taste of green apple, white peach, lemon, gooseberries and minerals. Long and dry finish with hints of white peaches and minerals. A smooth and clean Sancerre that is not very typical for the area. Goes well with fish, salads or shellfish.

1928 Federico Paternina Rioja Gran Reserva Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo
Top shoulder fill showing slight signs of past seepage under the cap, however wine itself showed no advancement from possible oxygen ingress. Fully resolved tannin with aromas of smoked meat, cranberry, and spice. Acidity was pronounced and depth of fruit balanced still at this great age, a crowd pleaser and so easy to drink. Drank much younger in all respects than '42 Tondonia Gran Reserva opened 2 weeks later. Exceptional bottle if you can find it around! Back label indicated this bottle was sourced from an Italian cellar sometime in the last few decades.
  • SoundinBetween commented:

1/28/23, 11:29 AM - That's interesting, thanks! This must have been from one of the first 2 batches, did not have a wax-sealed top, but standard gold foil capsule. What you say makes sense given how relatively young this tasted. Importer back label says Delafino Fine Wines, Portland, OR.

  • SoundinBetween commented:

1/29/23, 11:06 AM - It's not unheard of for small importers to purchase and bring over older wines sourced from European cellars, either from restaurants or private collectors. I can think of one particular NYC retailer who does this frequently using their connections in Piedmont, amongst other examples.

Just superb and changes with every sip. Very much like my prior tasting note. 2011 is clearly not an off vintage for this wine. It's wonderful. Maybe not quite as concentrated as some other vintages but Need to hold the rest as I am sure it will get better and might actually get more body with time. LONG finish. 95+

1978 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Mosel Saar Ruwer
Medium-into-deep gold color, with wet hay, evergreen (pine/fir), and a bit of lime coming immediately upon opening. More interesting aromatically, the palate is a bit weak with acidity lacking however a moderate amount of stone fruit and herbs (taragon and mint) come through as the bottle opens up. More interesting than good, probably as expected given the age and vintage.
  • SoundinBetween commented:

1/23/23, 1:43 PM - A curious find from a proper cellar, as 71's from the same source (Kabinett and Spatlese) have very good color and fills.

By far the best Champagne we had at our trip (including Selosse and Krug 2008). So beautiful fresh, a lot of fine bubbles, a bit roasted waffles, not over roasted nuts, lemon in the foreground. Perfectly balanced. One of the best champagnes I had so far in my life. Drank it at the winery. Thanks Betrand for sharing this unique bottle. Disgorged 93. 99

Testing out a new venue; 10/11/2022-10/12/2022 (Market Brasserie at the O2 Intercontinental): 2.5g dosage according to back label. A bit more funky, a bit of bruised apple, somewhat oxidative. Started off super zingy and exciting, went through a bit of a bla period and then pulled itself back together. A small pour left until the end of the meal was really lovely - I do wonder whether this style of wine would benefit from decanting?

This is so lovely. Wow, just a beautiful wine from PnP and over a couple of hours. I wish I had more discipline to let this unwind for 4+ hours or into another day, but the aromatics alone won't let you put the glass down. It's the nose that pushes this from Excellent to Outstanding for me. The perfume is gorgeous here, cherry, violets, roses, dried herbs and with air it picks up balsamic and mushroom notes. This has sneaky depth. It's so fresh and the color a vibrant, semi-translucent cherry, raspberry color, it has a persistent cool finish. The purity of expression here is notable. Very classy.

Bought at an Enoteca ~6 years ago (pretty sure we tasted there or out to dinner prior to buying), hauling home, and letting slumber. I'm so glad we did.

Medium ruby in the glass, with beautiful cocoa, mint, clove, and menthol/herbal aromas developing over 2 hours open. Gentle mouthfeel with well-balanced acidity, plush but not fat, lean but not overly so, a nice expression of Merlot but not much in the way of Cabernet Franc (20% of blend). The time in barrel for this wine really paid off nicely. Fully mature and would keep here for another few years, very nice at 9 years.

A blend of Viura aka. Macabeo (90%) and Malvasia Riojana aka. Alarije (10%). After the spontaneous fermentation, the wine is aged for 6 years in predominantly old American oak barrels, bottled unfiltered and aged for a further 5-6 years in the bottles before release. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted in Tondonia Blanco 1999-2005 vertical.

Luminous burnished golden color - very similar to the 2000 vintage and more youthful than the darker 1999 and 2002 vintages. The nose feels complex, slightly evolved and quite powerful with somewhat concentrated aromas of slivered almonds, some resinous tones, a little bit of hay, light creamy oak nuances, a sweet evolved hint of wizened peach, a touch of smoke and a toasty whiff of brioche. The wine feels remarkably concentrated, moderately full-bodied and even slightly oily on the palate with intense and remarkably dry, layered flavors of ripe red apple and tart lemony citrus fruits, tangy salinity, some savory wood spice, a little bit of oxidative nutty complexity, light creamy nuances, a sweet hint of dried yellow fruits and a touch of chalky mineral bitterness. Although the wine shows some sense of concentration and weight, the prominent, remarkably high acidity makes the wine feel very balanced and structure-driven. The finish is long, complex and tangy with bright, dry flavors of lemony citrus fruits, sharp saline mineral notes, some crisp Granny Smith apple, a little bit of chalky minerality, light evolved nuances of hay and chopped nuts, a developed hint of creamy oak and a touch of bruised or baked apple.

This has been consistently an outstanding vintage of Tondonia Blanco Reserva, but as I've tasted the wine previously only soon after release, I really haven't been able to glimpse the full potential of the wine. Now, in a vertical tasting, the wine really stood head and shoulders above the surrounding vintages, showing some evolved complexity, yet coming across as remarkably youthful, focused and structure-driven, even for a Tondonia Reserva. I really wish I would've purchased more of this upon release - at 20,95€ this was a screaming bargain. A very singular wine that is offering tons of complexity already now, yet still manages to show some additional potential for future evolution. I'd say this was my WotN in out Tondonia Blanco vertical and probably my favorite vintage of the Heredia Reservas vintages from the past 25 years - it is really difficult to make a white Rioja any better than this.

Wine from Dad's cellar. I think he bought as futures and was one of the first wines he bought. I never tasted this vintage of Beychevelle but figured it was worth trying to take a chance on. Actually popped and decanted into a camping wine goblet using a camping hand filter. Amazingly, no issues with the cork using a cheap corkscrew. The color was a light cherry red. It had a very faint but definite Beychevelle aroma with tobacco, forest floor, mushroom and light dried red fruit. The flavor profile was very similar and while quite light and clearly past prime, this was a wonderful wine to drink at a campsite during a mixed cookout (I know, weird but whatever-we had a long day driving so I took a chance). Possibly I gave it a point or two extra just because I was so surprised it was so good under the circumstances and after reading other notes. And the finish while not super long, was a good 15 seconds so well preserved bottles still are well worth drinking. I enjoyed it immensely and drank the last glass very slowly by the campfire so this wine doesn't die after opening but I would not recommend a long decant, just enough to remove the sediment. Dad has a few more, and I would love to drink one with him soon. Expect bottle variation but this one was a lucky one for sure. 92
  • SoundinBetween commented:

3/28/21, 3:58 PM - A lot of folks downplay just how good Beychevelle can be (in various eras of winemaking); this vintage is so good and I look forward to trying it again before long.

Saje's 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a medium-to-deep garnet wine that is comprised of 80% Grenache and 20% other permitted varietals (including some Grenache Blanc). This particular bottle was Vinturi-decanted and serially tasted over the ensuing three hours. Shortly after decanting, it reveals an impressive bouquet of red bramble fruits, licorice, Asian spices, Provençal herbs and loamy earth. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic, softly oaked, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%) and with light, silky-textured tannins, it stays dense on the mid-palate and finishes medium-to-long. This precocious Châteauneuf, showing beautifully now, will continue to do so over its first decade of life. Drink now-2025.

The grand finale for my 40th birthday celebration (Adam's, Logan Square, Chicago IL): Nose: Well hello there. This nose is immensely deep and layered that wafts out of the glass with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, fresh picked red fruits, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice, herb spices, rose petals, menthol, earth notes, and leather. There is still a very primary sense to the nose, but this was pretty open for business after 3 hours of decanting.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with crisp, high acidity and silky, but youthful, high tannins. The structure is deceptively youthful, but it isn't overpowering. The feel though is like a velvet hammer and deep with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice, herb spices, rose petals, earth notes, and leather.

Overall: So, this is kinda good. Like, insanely good. I expected it to be drinking a little bit on the earlier side with the vintage and it is definitely there. It is extremely primary and dark red fruited right now and it can certainly develop a lot more. That said, it is also at a stage where drinking it definitely provides a hell of a lot of joy.

I'm not entirely sure how to evaluate this, and I am sure I'm not the only one. I'm relatively inexperienced with deliberately oxidized white wines. Positives: complex (half a dozen flavor groups: nutty, vanilla, pineapple, citrus, pear, cantaloupe), long long finish, acidity and body are complimentary to the bold flavors. Negatives: easy to catch yourself thinking you're drinking a Napa chard that is 5-10 years too old. I didn't sense this needed more age, but I also really have no clue on how this might develop, nor am I really interested in finding out--I prefer to drink white Burgundy younger in fear of losing it to over-oxidization, for example. Obviously this is not an everyday drinker nor a crowd pleaser and it takes some serious contemplation to appreciate, but when you get it right, it is fascinating.

I wanted to go to 94 but i controlled myself. This wine is destined to be easily a better score in the future. Decanted for 2 hours. Initially the wine was somewhat closed. After 4 hours the smell of black pepper was very prominent. After 2 hours drinking the wine it gained complexity still with notes of clove and bacon. The fruit is still primary with blackberries and prunes. Needs another 5 years

This did not ring my bell, at all.
Nose with mainly sweet, towards over ripe, yellow apples and some tropical fruits and loads of sweet vanilla.
Palate gives the impression of way too much oak being used, with loads of vanilla and a high dosage/over ripeness of fruit, leaving almost a residual sweetness on the finish.
Too sweet for my palate, and not enough acidity, minerals or freshness in the fruit to satisfy me.
Not my cup of Cramant, disappointing.

This bottle seemed old and I guess it was prematurely oxidized. The nose was only somewhat aromatic with lots of honey, tropical fruit, and other oxidized notes. The palate was again oxidized but drinkable and reasonable smooth. Obviously a huge disappointment and nothing like the Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet and Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte I've had before. I debate whether to call this bottle defective, but I think it's important to bring down the scores of wines that have common premox problems.

Nice wines; 7/8/2016-7/9/2016 (Geelong VIC): The only good thing about this wine is a peekaboo from behind a curtain of Brett which gives an indication of what this wine might have been. I think it would have been pretty enjoyable but for the lick of Brett and a seemingly unresolved primary ferment which has left too much sugar on the table. Between cork, premox and Brett issues I'm finding European wine a minefield to navigate. At least this one was inexpensive

Notes of a Novice
8 HOUR TASTE TEST. Corvina and Rondelle - 13.5% alcohol

In this test, wine was poured into 9 wine glasses upon opening. One was tasted right away, all others every hour. The object was to see how aeration works on this particular wine. Personally, I’m having trouble with bitter aftertaste in a lot of red wines that were just opened. Interesting to note that this exercise only used up about ¼ of the bottle. The rest was re-corked and kept on kitchen counter.

Conclusion - took 5 hour for bitterness to diminish significantly (according to my palate). There was a "no bitter aftertaste" at hour 5, but then present at hour 6 and 7. Had some food at hour 5, so that probably skewed the impression. I marked it "neutral" because I could actually drink this wine (if it were not for the bitter aftertaste, I'd like this wine - would be nice for sipping).

• upon opening
• color - purplish ruby, (bright mahogany)
• density - thin, slightly towards medium
• no legs to speak of
• on the nose - first impression was strong vanilla
• closed
• upon swirling a bit, undefined dark fruit (not too ripe, but leaning towards sweet - imperceptible almost)
• in the mouth, slightly acidic, very pleasant - crisp, fresh tasting
• slight bitter aftertaste (I have read that the culprit are the tannins - only quoting).
• upon more sampling, the bitterness is emphasized. To me, unpleasant.
• if it weren’t for the bitterness, I’d like this wine.
• the finish is nice and crisp
• noticeable tannins
• for me, the bitter aftertaste is unpleasant

• after 1 hour

• color - looks similar to earlier
• without disturbing wine, on the nose, the vanilla has mellowed and blended with the still undistinguishable fruit
• upon swirling in glass, vanilla becomes predominant, and fruit emerge
• tart, ripe but not sweet fruit - mainly tree fruit
• in the mouth, nice acid, fresh, crisp
• finish is nice, at least medium tannins
• bitter aftertaste (too bitter for me)
• if it were not bitter, I’d like this wine

• after 2 hours

• color - perhaps a bit more of brownish? (will check after 8 hours against fresh pour from bottle)
• seems to have developed short-lived legs
• without disturbing wine in glass, on the nose, a mellow vanilla, more fruit combo (done without stirring glass
• after swirling, alcohol seems prevalent, followed by vanilla.
• Fruite barely whispering
• in the mouth, nice acid, more pronounced than earlier
• bitter taste still there, however, diminished
• still would not buy this wine for myself

• after 3 hours

• color - wine looks a bit browner - a less bright mahogany
• legs have improved (more, longer, slower)
• without disturbing wine in glass, on the nose - beginning to open up gently
• upon swirling glass, strong alcohol smell (leading), followed by vanilla, followed by very sweet, ripe, sour cherries, mixed with undetectable dark fruit
• slight dark berries, bit of raspberry,
• nice acidity
• bitter upon swallowing, but not as bitter as upon opening
• the finish isn’t as bitter as earlier; bitterness goes away a bit faster than earlier
• as is, I could enjoy this at someone’s house for dinner (not sure I’d buy it for myself)

• after 4 hours

• color - same?
• without disturbing wine in glass, on the nose, lost the strong alcohol and vanilla
• now, mainly tart, ripe fruit, albeit mild
• this wine has not truly opened up yet
• still nice acidity
• hint of bitter, but less than 1 hour ago - to me, the bitterness quite tolerable
• finish is short on this wine

• after 5 hours

• color - same
• without disturbing wine in glass, wine is finally opening up - lovely ripe, but not overly ripe dark fruit
• nice acid
• hint of bitter, very slight, just enough to present
• no bitter in finish
• finish is pleasant, but fairly short
• as of right now, I wouldn’t mind having some of these bottles in my house
• regarding food pairing, I can see this wine being quite versatile - with pasta, potato dumplings, grilled meat, or just sipping. Nice and refreshing (never thought I’d use those words).

• after 6 hours

• on the nose, without disturbing glass, beautiful fruit
• after swirling, even more so. Delightful!
• cherries, sour cherries (ripe, not too sweet) not sure of dark berries
• vanilla has almost disappeared and fruit have taken centerstage
• in the mouth, nice acid, nice fruit, raspberry coming through more
• bit of bitter aftertaste, seems a bit more than an hour ago (had a couple of corn chips before hour 5, wonder if that made a difference)
• do not care for this hint of bitter - does not last long

• after 7 hours

• just like hour 6
• still bitter finish form me.
• hour 5 was probably not tasted well (had some food)

• after 8 hours

• confused! some of the bitterness seems to have gone down
• but - I did swirl the glass a few times during the last hour, while it was waiting to be tested
• will leave bottle uncorked till morning
• again - this is a nice wine. If it were not fo the bitterness described above, I would like this wine.
• to me, great for sipping
• nothing spectacular, a bit above average (remember, novice here)

• day 2 - wine was kept re-corked on kitchen counter

• wine opened up - very pleasant on the nose, lovely ripe fruit, subdued, not fresh
• nice acidity, just enough to make a statement, not overpowering
• the first sip was bitter - not as bitter as upon opening, but still bitter (it’s the kind that keeps becoming stronger on the finish)

Monitored decant for approximately 3 hours when this wine start to bloom.
Dark garnet color with medium to medium-plus staining in the waves of cascading legs.
The nose shows warm scents of gravel, rose petals, dark cherries, cassis, ripe berry and plum playing well with aromas of sweet tobacco, toast, vanilla, new suede, earth, mocha, graphite and Kirschwasser.
Full bodied on the lush palate showing of silky textures, refined, suave tannins and juicy, structured acidity. Flavors of cherry and Kirsch lead, integrated well with gravel, vanilla, crushed rose petals, plum, pomegranate syrup, sweet tobacco, earth, toasted oak with hints of cocoa and balsamic.
Long on the medium-plus grippy finish where this wine shows its youthfulness and pedigree.

Overall this wine has a long way to go. drinking exceptionally now with plenty of air time.

At the Friday tasting group, classified Bordeaux 2004 or older, tasted blind. Up against some terrific wines, including an 86 Gruard Larose, a 97 Ducru-Beaucailou, a 2001 Baron de Pichon Longueville, a 1995 Calon Segur, and an 82 Brainair-Ducru. Our wines held their own, but we're definitely not the stars in this group.

The 03 Haut-Bages Liberal led off. Dark garnet, not a lot of browning, still a baby. Quiet nose. Soft in the mouth, but still showed some tannic backbone. Tasted youthful for a Bordeaux, and very long. Quite pleasant, and seemed like it could improve.

The 1995 Giscours had a much more expressive nose, really jumped out at you, tobacco and leather along with the dark red fruit. A bit of lead pencil on the palate, lots of red and dark fruit, long finish. Lots of structure, but a softness that made one guess that we had brought a right bank ringer. Interesting in that in these middle 90 years, Giscours used more Merlot than Cab. This one was 60% Merlot.

Overwhelming impression all through the evening was that the guys from Bordeaux really know how to make wine. None of these seemed anywhere near the end of their development. Wonderful, all in all.

2nd bottle from auction lot. 1st was the worst fill (4cm) and was DOA (oxidized). Slow-O did not help on that one. This bottle (3.5cm), on the other hand, had the magic that I experienced from a bottle from another lot a couple of years ago. Lovely nose of strawberry upon opening so re-corked for later. Re-opened 3 hours later and drank over 6 hours. Started out with the strawberry nose and some rose. Red fruit and earth in the mouth. Soft and short initially, but then the magic begins. Puts on significant length and weight with air. The nose becomes so much more complex with nice spice. Acid emerges to balance the sweet, ripe fruit. Wonderful stuff. I will drink the rest over the next 2-3 years.

This has amazing potential and was very nice this evening, but showed quite primary and a tad disjointed. All the raw materials are there in spades, but was a bit closed despite an aggressive decant for about an hour. Hands off for a long time, but huge potential down the road. Don't open now is my suggestion, if you want to really appreciate the wine.

This was very fruit forward with juicy fruit, a nose of kirsch, some citrus, and finishing with a mouthful of cottony tannins. Almost new world in presentation, but with a hint of provencal spice, very well-balanced and very drinkable (and not very complex). No idea when this was bottled or made, but a code on the label says L.06.13-07.08. No idea whether this means something or not.

10/8/15, 5:31 PM - just bought a bottle of this from Flickinger in Chicago with the same lot # and dates, and what it seems to mean is bottled in June 2013, being a blend of 2007 and 2008 vintages. might be wrong on the 06.13, but that's what it appears to mean.. that would seem to make sense as i know this wine is held for several (5+) years before bottling.

Started with a barnyard funk smell and harsh taste. That blew off after an hour or so, then it was just flat and muted. About an hour later, it crashed and was undrinkable. The rest went down the drain. Possibly a flawed bottle? Will not score it given that possibility.

brilliant nose of strawberry and watermelon; very full bodied and with much greater length than your average provence rose immediately upon opening. after an hour open, became substantially less appealing. where we left it after 3 hours open, this had flattened substantially (while still cold). overall impression, this made me wonder if the wine would come around over the course of drinking the bottle across multiple days.. first bottle of Tempier here though, so..

I feel like Wine Access, normally a reliable source of well-priced wine special deals, took me for a ride on this one. I paid $34 (with case) for this, which sounded from the pro reviews as though it would be a steal for a high-class barbaresco. But though it does have nebbiolo typicity, it does not hold together as a solid wine as a whole. Traditional, but still -- does that mean it has to be tough from entry to finish? Little body, medium to light color, strong new oak, not enough fruit in my opinion to hold out the at least 10 years it will take for the oak/tannin/acid to come into integration. Sorry friends. Didn't enjoy this, and I doubt I will in the future. Anyone want to buy 11 bottles from me?

Retasted 2018. Same rating. 8 years old now. Less unyieldingly tough, yes, but this is not developing into the beauty my nebbiolo-loving friends promised. Still overly dry, now raisiny and even hinting at the dreaded cough-syrup. Still not a fan.

1/26/15, 10:05 AM - I asked because I tried the 2009 vintage, and it wasn't until after it had been open for about 2 days that the tannin finally shred and it opened up and was fantastic. There was no decant there though..

This bottle is in mint condition. You will never be able to imagine what it would smell like. Very fruity, mineral, earth. The wine stood up as the candidate for WOTN, we didn't really count but I think this is the group WOTN, if not it must be a tie to 1975 LMHB. But to me, clearly the LMHB for tonight. Big fully mature wine that can last at least 5 years , I mean at least. 96+

Definitely French, without the over-the-top, in-your-face flavors of a California wine.
I believe that this wine would have benefited from a couple of hours in a decanter as it improved over the time that we drank the bottle.

Well, here we are in 2014, and it is still deelish. Fruit fading a bit, but black cherry, plumb, tobacco, and leather coming through. I still have one of these, and I won't make any dire predictions.
