Wonderfully refreshing and versatile with a cool 17 years of age. Held up extremely well and just as good on night 3. I love finding these old Elizabeth Spencer’s. The quality is off the charts.

It’s alive x 2!

Drank side by side with the stellar 1999. This was completely different, with fruit in a more primary state and tasting more like 2015 than 2000. Well structured and balanced, but without the tertiary notes in the ‘99. These old Cali zins are just so damn good! Amazing find on WineBid.

It’s alive!

Well that was a pleasant surprise. Purchased on a whim from WineBid and this delivered an abundant package of joy. Balanced mature fruit with just the right bit of tertiary to remind you of the vintage year, but also clearly present fruit and mild tannins. So so so good. I’ve yet to find a high quality aged zin from sonoma or napa that has not been somewhere between very good and spectacular.

Nice but unremarkable given the age. Plenty of structure here and by no means over the hill. Just missing a “wow”.

Nice versatile weeknight food wine. I didn’t pin down the wow that garagiste notes, but this was a terrific and fun QPR wine that is best on night one. By night three, preserved, most of the life was gone.

The last of the vertical and probably the least desirable. This one had some heat but it was well balanced by its maturity and completeness. Always a treat to pop an old ravenswood. They age gracefully and can do so for decades.

The winner of a vertical that included an ‘87 ravens wood pickberry and a 07 ravenswood teldeschi. This was dynamite! Perfectly integrated tannins with a complex depth of flavor and length. No signs of being tired. Just a damn good oldy ready for a few more years yet.

35 years young and still singing. The age was well defined but the color was somehow miraculously light purple — no major bricking or signs of fading. Good depth of flavor, savory and fruity, with a long finish. This bottle lasted for at least two hours, not fading fast like some other older bottles. Superb.

Still a babe in the woods! I’m not following the comments about over the hill. This was young and alive! Ok maybe not young, but definitely alive and full of verve and energy. Soft on night two, with tannins essentially melted into the background. Food versatile and a cool old/young treat.

Deep and savory, beautiful for a night but off the cliff by night two. If you open plan to finish it that night and you’ll be rewarded!

On night one this was delicious but a tad sweet - deep fruit that was still perhaps a bit too fruity even at 6 years. A few nights later everything is in balance and insanely drinkable. A very fun wine.

I had high hopes based on previous bottles but this was so high in acid that it was difficult to enjoy. Perhaps some bottle variation, as I didn’t get the typical Maresh wow here.

Pure joy. So perfectly integrated but retains a ring of complexity, acid, and oak that keeps this interesting even on night 4. An impossibly good value.

Perhaps past its time, but also enjoyable and with good depth. Some savory and saline notes, but somewhat disjointed.

World class rose … fully substantiated.

I’ve had a lot of rose, but nothing comes close to this in its complete mouth feel and experience. I’d say the flavors are typical of high quality Provençal rose, but there was definitely something more here. I believe the term is viscosity — just a complete mouth filling experience that lasted. I understand the rarity and the price point now! A special occasion wine.

One of the most complete and transcendent wines for me yet. A special occasion enhanced by this, absolutely. Dark and savory. Long and complex. Stunning!

Terrific weeknight food friendly Pinot. To my taste this was more Russian River than willamette in style, but also it’s own thing — Tasmanian?

Best Gigondas to date - maybe best southern rhone overall for me. Luscious red recruits with garrique, salinity, and a just a touch of spicy effervescent. Versatile and restrained for 15% abv. In a prime spot now but likely to stay there for a while get.

@aravindasok has this spot on - especially the notes about mint and tarragon. Cool introduction to a new grape (for me).

No rush to drink this. I’m curious what the next few years may do to bottles 2 and 3. Rimmerman suggests a drinking window for another 10 years, and a decant!

High hopes for this after so many years. It as perfectly lovely. Fully integrated tannins and a tangy ripe fruit profile. Not much depth IMO even after a good decant and a 2 hour dinner. Ready to drink but perhaps it needs even more air than I was able to give.

25 years young and still kicking. This tasted more like a 10 year old than a 25 year old. Bright acidity and fruit with some (not a lot) of wood and earth. Very very good and a terrific 4th of July accompaniment!

If “I’d bathe in this” was a rating, this would get it.

What an extraordinary wine!

The cleanest fruit with a slight touch of mineral effervescence. Acid. Juice. Refreshing but also complex. In California this would be double the price!

On a hunt for some more…

This is up there for me (top 5) of roses out there, and I’ve had a fair share …

Flavor is off the charts with some legit viscosity that signals there’s something serious under there.

Still alive and kicking! Although barely - the cork was almost entirely soaked through. Minimal to no oxidation. And even better on night two after preserving in the fridge. Fruit still present. Minimal tannin. Lots of savory and “dirty” flavors. Really good purchase ($20) on a whim to see that it’s still alive enough to enjoy.

All the other TNs capture this well. I added a few points because this is so darn good and in such a good place right now.

Same impression as previous TN. Some snap crackle and a much lighter Syrah rendition than is more common for Sonoma. A weeknight pleasure!

While very good I did not find the garrique or herbal or mint flavors that others mentioned. I could have guessed this to be a French merlot. A first for me in Texas hill country — I’m intrigued enough to seek out other examples as well.

What an enigma! In open this was tight and harsh but over the course of two weeks — really — under a champagne stopper in the fridge this got better and better. I’d start it at an 88 and move it to a 93 over that time. Remarkable!
