Licorice and cough syrup on the nose. Some red berries, spice, and black pepper. Bitter tartness and some tobacco on the finish. This wine wasn't really for me.

Drank the 1998 first. This is the 1998's little brother (see those notes). Way less nose and about 1/3'd the flavor intensity of the '98. Still really good, though!

Super dark in color. Black liquorish on the nose. Pretty fruit forward, a lot of cab inkiness, and juicy tannins. Super drinkable!

I kind of think that I learned a lot from this wine. I tried to open it up and decant it for awhile. When I finally decided to try it, it had a earthy-barnyard and raw meat smell with some pomegranate/ strawberry twizzler on the nose. When I tasted it, there were some raw mushrooms, black pepper, and it was a little bit stemy. I kind of enjoyed the tannins, but they seemed to over power everything else that was going on. I then gave up on the wine, put it back into the bottle, and suctioned the air out. Last night, I attempted the wine again. The raw meat on the nose became more like bacon and the rest of the smell become muted.....not much there at all. When I drank the wine, it was totally different. It had a silky mouth feel, the tannins were well integrated, and the the wine tasted like roasted red berries (like they were stuffed in a baked turkey) with no sweetness. It then finished with sour cherry like favors. It's was really good.

Wow. Really good wine. Dark brick red in color. Kind of murky and not clear. Smells awesome! First thing I thought was that this wine smelled like port. Raisin and a current/blackberry reduction syrup on the nose. So much so, I thought this wine would be a sweet fruit bomb. Tasting the wine, I found that this was a very well balanced and a very well structured wine. Dark berries up front that gave way to one of the best finishes I have ever experienced. The dark berries transitioned to perfect juicy tannins and then to a tart raspberry jam to tobacco. This wine was light to medium bodied and didn't have a "creamy" mouth feel. After 2 hours of decanting, the wine seemed to lose its strength and became super mellow.

Super dark ruby in color. Wet stone, chocolate, and cherry syrup were what I got on the nose. When tasting, the first thing I noticed was that this wine is not the big fruit forward wine that I was expecting. Solid mouth coating tannins here with wet stone, green veggies, and tart berries on the finish. Seems to me like this wine has good structure but a little out of balance on the tart tannins for my tastes.

Well structured. The wine had common Syrah "spiciness," but spiciness was well mellow and integrated with some solid tannins.

Flowery and berries. Great mouth feel and the tannins were well rounded and not over powering. It's been awhile since I had this wine, but what I remember most was how well structured it seemed. By the time I went back to the winery to buy more, it was all sold out.
