Fantastic stuff, powerful and extracted style for sure but not overblown or goofy. It's not the most incredibly fragrant Napa Cab I've enjoyed but already very expressive with a boatload of creme de cassis, blackberry compote, caramel, a bit of toast, very light coffee for that touch of bitter contrast, etc all over the rich nose. Palate pretty much exactly the same, lots of purple/black fruit, expensive oak that doesn't overwhelm the other components, lots of fine tannic filigree, and enough acidity for the style (not acid-driven or super precise, but not flabby, jammy, or cloying at all.) Really excellent and fun Napa, more about power than complexity, which is sometimes what I crave.

9/4/23, 3:43 PM - Well, it's a bit better than the 69 points you gave the 2021 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir. Still, it seems clear that you don't know anything about the 100-point rating system. Additionally, the two notes you've provided on the two wines I've seen your reviews on---"okay"---shows you don't know much about tasting notes either. Please stop.

I purchased this vintage not expecting much, it seems that Lewis Cabs have deviated southward from an nicely established course after the 2013 vintage in my opinion. Pop and poured, it started off with an expressive lavender nose and a hint of a vegetal / earthy aroma. On the palate, nice berry flavors black and blueberry, dark currants, and oak, actually better than I expected. The 2017 vintage is showing to be more of a hit and miss, but this wine is good. The extraction is nice, but it's slightly lacking in depth compared to other wines in its class that I have tasted. All said, this was a pretty decent surprise. Could this wine developer further to better level? Probably its a young wine. I have half a bottle remaining and if it merits, I will add to my notes. In conclusion, this bottle was better than expected, perhaps I will buy more. 92+ 93 Points

PnP and followed for a day. Lovely aromas of blue and black berry, cassis, raspberry, smoke, herbs, something that reminds me of sweat, cedar, and earth. Blackberries, tart cherries, plum, red cherries, chocolate, earth, herbs, a little graphite, and some oak on the palate. Nice acidity, chewy tannins, medium-long finish. Tasty. I like how the red fruits weave through the dark notes, giving this wine lift. The tannins and oak need some time to meld, but this is really quite drinkable right now. 91-92

Deep ruby, with purple accents, neon rim.

Nose: Raspberry, cassis, red plum, smoldering incense, sagebrush, light soy sauce, oak paneling.

Mouth: Pure, savory raspberry, cassis, and blueberry skin show for just a moment upfront before immediately yielding to a forward facing spine of acid, which picks up everything, allowing the entire package to surf along on top, picking up notes of sage, anise, potpourri, and cocoa nib on the way. From this, everything sails along endlessly as fine grained tannins check in as the finish recedes at a glacial pace.

Overall: Well defined Napa mountain fruit and stellar palate action make this a winner already, especially with about 2+ hours of air. Drinkable now, but additional meld would be really nice to see on this. The acid could calm down just a but more, and the tannins could melt further into the fruit. If you can wait, start looking at this come 2023 or so. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

94.

4/28/20, 1:15 PM - The Costco where I live does not typically sell wines anywhere close to this caliber. After reading the WS review on this wine, as well as yours (great notes, BTW)—and also taking into account the nice price (well below release price)—I snagged 3 bottles. One is for opening this weekend—with ample decanting, of course—and the other two will be for sometime down the road. Looking forward to this wine! Thank you for your awesome TN’s!

Less than 90 points, really? Getting blue fruits, nice mouth feel, seems like it is quite a step above the other J Lohr, about 93points if not more. Now that I gave it a couple hours, very nice jamminess covers the palate with balance, plenty of fruit. I am quite fond of this wine with steak

Tried two more bottles and definitely am getting bottle variation with more watery and less complex almost like the other 90 point ratings
  • DuckfaninMT commented:

This wine really delivered tonight, perhaps the best showing since its bottling. As has been stated in previous notes, nice deep, dark purple color and extraction, with a deep, dark purple color. Ripe dark fruit composed of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruit. On the palate is a big, full-bodied, fruit forward, yet nicely crafted and not overdone. 94.6 Points and perhaps the best is yet to come.

The nose was dark yet zesty, showing woodland herbs against polished black fruits, dried florals, and sweet spices. On the palate, I found silky textures, offset by cool-toned acidity, as fresh black fruits enveloped the senses, washed clean by another burst of acid and saturating minerality, creating a wonderfully balanced expression. The finish was long, as saturating dark fruits and minerals gave way to sneaky tannins, leaving an impression of youth but also one of pure satisfaction. I love it when the hype is justified.

2015 Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Synthesis Napa Valley
Nose: Bright, sour cherries with some firm, dry oak and slightly dried earth. After some time, vanilla appears on the nose.

Palate: Dark, purple fruit, deep earth, same firm, dry oak and some vanilla as well. There's noticeable amount of heat and oak.

Dark Ruby with some purpling. Dry with medium-minus amounts of chewy tannins. Medium bodied with medium to medium-plus acidity. Good finish of about 10-12 seconds. So maybe the bottle I had before was some bottle variation but it was really bad variation. This is a lot better but can use a lot of decanting or just more bottle age. Still young and harsh but a hefty decant will help the harshness. Enjoyable now minus the heat and some oak though. Give it another at least 5-8 years for some oak to integrate and the heat/harshness to settle a little.

It was MUCH better with the nice char of grilled red meat with grilled onions, cheese and fries. Yes, it was only an “In ‘n Out” cheeseburger and fries, but that ain’t bad and they BOTH improved each other. Yummy!

I’d also raise this to a Very Good QPR. Love it when something like this happens to a wine one has had before!

From Bledsoe Family Winery, Flying B 2016 is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Syrah aged in 64% new French oak for 20 months. At this stage in its development—the nose is heavily laden in primary fruit—juicy blackberries, black currant, and black cherry precede lighter tones of cinnamon, vanilla bean paste, and sweet tobacco. In the mouth, ample black fruit fleshes out the core. Suave tannins and balanced acidity contribute to this wine's overall deliciousness and length. 14.5% ABV | Sample

Pleasantly surprised to find a balanced and well integrated Napa cab at this young age and at this good price point. Rated 92 points by WE. PNP. Dark purple in the glass. Flavor profile included blackberry, plum, cedar, oak, vanilla, mocha and coffee elements. Mouthfeel was thick, bordering on rich and slightly sweet without crossing the line into fruity. Slightly complex, full-bodied appealing with structure supported by dusty tannins. Medium length finish that was smooth and pleasing. While looking for a "current drinker" I found a wine that fills the bill yet has potential for some significant cellar aging. An excellent QPR.

A gorgeous transparent garnet with a slightly milky hue. The unexpected essence of peaches, yes peaches, with apricots and nectarines, are the first surprising notes offered up in this heady elixir. Still in its infancy, with as much underlying funk as the godfather of soul himself and a sweet cherry caramel backbone, it is years away from the spectacular wine it will become. But it will be difficult to resist right now. Opens like a rose with each floral smoky, ethereal mouthful. And the peachy aftertaste lingers for minutes. A wonderful wine.
