Classic Leflaive aromas of gunflint, matchstick. Very smooth, rich and buttery, a little too fat for my taste, but some minerals and density. Finish somewhat lacking.

Deep rusty red. The nose was initially a little barnyardy but this quickly blew off. I got old leather, wild strawberries, and a strong gamey profile. Perfect balance of spicy red fruit and acid, it had an exotic wild game note that I loved. The finish was long and pure. This has a lot of life left in it, which surprised me, and tasted younger than the '90 and '89 I've had lately. Really impressive. This went the best with my lamb shank of all the reds.

Dark ruby color. Classic Pauillac nose of lead pencil, leather, tar. Very elegant with sweet resolving tannins, none of the astringency I have found in a lot of 88s. Beautiful blackberry, plum, and grilled steak flavors with a long vibrant finish. I was very pleasantly surprised by how this performed. I'll be looking for this at future auctions.

This was popped and poured; in retrospect I think it needed a couple of hours in the decanter. Bright rub red. Nose of asian spices, rhubarb, strawberry. Very acidic on the entry, but with a light feathery texture that made me think red burgundy. Vigorous finish, with a strong sense of rhubarb pie. There was not the level of complexity that I love about Chave, but it was a great wine nonetheless with a good future. I think it may have suffered by being surrounded by so many other powerful reds we consumed, along with not enough breathing time.

Light gold color. Not a whole lot on the nose, a faint sense of honey, sea salt and maybe a little matchstick. Very light and elegant, not your typical chablis flavors, with very little acidity to balance. Blind I would have guessed white bordeaux. The honey note carried through on the finish. I liked this a lot initially until we popped the Coche and then it was no contest! I went back to it later and the finish was short, with little remaining fruit. Drink em if you got em.

This was from a 375ml and popped and poured. Dark copper color. Intense nose of apricot and marzipan, really expanded as it warmed up. Very thick and unctuous with strong honeyed and caramel notes and powerful botrytis flavors. There was a strong whiplash of acid that balanced the sweetness and this paired beautifully with a variety of blue cheeses and a divine chocolate pudding cake. This has light years ahead of it.

I knew from the second I opened this it was going to be special. I poured a small glass before leaving for the restaurant and it smelled divine! Light gold color. Intense nose of hazelnut, vanilla, lemon wafer and a toasty oak note. Full bodied, with waves of crunchy yellow fruits, oodles of intensity and a breathtaking finish. This opened up considerably over the course of 3 hours and after a night of debaucherous consumption this stood out as the winner for me. I can't believe this is a village wine. Many, many years ahead of it. I would take this over many grand crus any day of the week. Wow!

This was double decanted an hour before bringing to the restaurant. There was considerable sediment, of course, and a beautiful pale light ruby color. Wonderful nose of rose petals, cherry pie, and earth. There was this great inner core of sweet fruit in the mid-palate that surprised me, with sour cherry, leather and a distinct earthiness on the finish. This changed a lot over the course of 3 hours, seemingly shutting down and then opening up again. After 3 hours it was still going strong, but the finish fell off. Lovely!

Medium gold color, fine bubbles. A little tight at first, with a whiff of baking biscuit. Very rich and thick, with bright citrus fruit, and a long finish. I went back to this later when it was at room temp and it really popped at that point. I loved it!

Dark yellow color with fine bead. My first concern with this wine was the nose, which had a slight sherry aroma and smelled a little like ripe pineapple. Very thick viscous bubbly, quite full bodied, lacking in freshness and somewhat ponderous flavors of caramel, baked apple, and dark honey. This was much more advanced than the last bottle of this I had last year when it was spectacular. Definitely oxidizing and on the downslope, unless this was a bad bottle. Oh well.

Decanted for 2 hours before going back in the bottle. The smell wafted across the kitchen, yum! Very dark blue-black with no lightening at the rim. Intoxicating nose of graphite, lead pencil, cedar, fragrant perfume of pure cassis. Also, I got a distinct olive tapenade note with swirling. Medium bodied, with firm sweet tannins and a blast of juicy black fruits. Earth, tobacco, everything you would think of a classic Pauillac at its apogee. There was also a slight green note with olive hints, especially on the finish. A great showing for this wine and reinforces my love for great vintages of LB. Went great with the veal chop.

This was brought for me to try. Inky dark purple. Sweet dark chocolate on the nose. With swirling, a faint note of coconut and charred oak. Big, thick plush mouthfeel, with dark black fruits, chocolate, earth and a good dose of minerality. This was quite fresh and although stacked with concentrated ripe fruit, was balanced with formidable tannins and acid. Oak was well integrated. Nice smooth lingering finish. I don't drink many Cali cabs anymore but I really enjoyed this.

I always have the fear of premox in the back of my mind with this producer, but nothing to worry about with this bottle. Light yellow color with initially reticent nose. As it warmed up I got citrus fruits, vanilla, an interesting nutty aroma, especially hazelnut. There was a razor sharp acidity in the midpalate that I loved, along with crunchy yellow fruit, lime, and a lot of minerality. Definitely grand cru stuff, with a long oily, lip-smacking finish. I went back to this at the end of the night and it had grown in intensity, really great bottle. This is drinking great right now, which surprised me a little bit considering it's only age 8 for a corton charlie. I wonder about the long term future.

This was decanted for 1 hour. Initially very prominent nose of bing cherry and spices, earthy with some forest floor. The palate was soft, bright red fruits, resolved tannins but still a nice acidic bite. The finish was a little short and as the night went on this faded quickly. I probably should have just popped and poured this one. Drink now.

This was decanted and immediately consumed. Dark purple color with great nose of smokey meats, black cherries, very floral and open right from the get go. Very powerful tannins, meaty, peppery, and chock full of dark black fruit. Long powerful finish. This opened and improved greatly as the night wore on, went beautifully withe the lamb shank. This has a long life ahead and I will not touch my remaining bottles for a few years.

Dark ruby red color. Great aromas of sweet cherry tart, earth, spices. Sweet cheery pie, strawberry and red licorice on the palate. There was a lot of sappy extract and a good dose of snappy acids balancing out the fruit. Long tasty finish of rhubarb pie. Not much oak evident here, which has been a common criticism of Groffier. In a good place right now but plenty of life ahead. Me likey!

This was served to me blind from a half bottle. Deep dark purple. Fascinating nose of maple syrup, spice cake, crushed blackberries. Very thick and full bodied, with obvious alcohol throughout, but balanced and concentrated with beautiful plum and chocolate covered cherry flavors. I could tell this was not a vintage port, and guessed some sort of late harvest Aussie shiraz. It was obviously new world but an excellent example of an aged Zin. This was their first vintage of this wine.

Deep red color. Fantastic nose of dark red berries, menthol, cassis, lead pencil. Wave after wave of pure blackcurrant, spices, minerals, red licorice and sweet tannins. Very brisk acids gave a brightness to the midpalate, but very well balanced. Then a super long lip smacking finish. Really in a good place right now. Still a lot of life left but if you have a few pop one now. Excellent with the grilled veal chop.

Light green-gold color. Awesome nose of sea spray, lemons, green apple. Beautifully balanced at such a young age, with bright acids complementing the white fruits, minerals galore and a long pure, lip smacking finish. Classic Chablis with a very long life ahead. What I really loved about this wine was that it didn't knock you over the head with huge flavors, it was just so cool, smooth and went with the raw shellfish beautifully. I would not open one for a couple more years.

Light bronze color with fine bead. Not very expressive nose of baking bread and yellow fruits. There was a hollowness in the midpalate that was disappointing. A very heavy, ponderous style lacking in freshness. I went back to this at the end of the night and it actually brightened up considerably with a little more bite. Not enough acidity to satisfy my palate, though. Drink up.

Gigantic behemoth of a wine. Very dark purple with nose of licorice, asphalt, black cherries and alcohol. Huge, concentrated on the palate with oodles of thick black fruits intermingled with minerals and earth. Somewhat alcoholic finish marrs the wine but this is an infant monster with 20 years ahead. DO NOT TOUCH.

My last bottle. Surprisingly dark with no bricking. Soaring nose of lead pencil, black cherry, earth, old leather couch, smelled like a cedar closet. I loved the nose! Great penetrating flavors of pure cassis, minerals muscular tannins, and a long tasty finish. Blind I would have guessed much younger. My last bottle of this 3 years ago was much more advanced and I wasn't expecting much. Just a lovely example of a masculine claret with some age on it. Well stored bottles have many years of life left. Went great with prime dry aged filets.

Dark ruby red. A lot of black fruits on the nose with pronounced alcohol, a little black pepper. There was quite a bit of very ripe blackberry, brambleberry, fig, licorice. The finish was a bit hot with mouth coating tannins. I liked this but my taste in CDP runs more to red than black fruit profile and this was a little over the top for me. I would have liked more acid to balance the ripe fruit. Maybe this will calm down in time. I think it showed the vintage character quite well.

When I had this last 4 years ago it was quite shut down with muted flavors and never opened up. Different story this time around! Beautiful shimmering green-gold color. Soaring aromas of gunpowder, flint, lemons, nutmeg. Intense minerals, crunchy fuji apple, lemon-lime. Perfectly integrated acids that framed the fruit and a finish that was lip-smacking and very long. I'm sipping this now and each time it seems to expand more in my mouth and leave me wanting more. The power of a Batard combined with the minerally intensity of a Chevalier. Wow!

Deep dark purple. Immediately on the nose there was overwhelming amounts of wood, this detracted from the aromas of melted licorice and blackberries. Way too much oak, charred oak made this very difficult to drink. There was a blowsiness to the wine, with plenty of rich dark black fruits but this was overtreated with too much oak. Very disappointing. I rarely drink Aussie Shiraz anymore but Run Rig was always one of my favorites.

Pale yellow color with fine bead. very open nose of baking biscuit, lemons, white flowers. Very intriguing palate of crunchy granny smith apple, lemon-lime, white peaches. Light purple color. This was probably not a correct bottle. The nose was subdued with some white pepper and raspberry fruit. In the mouth everything was dialed down several notches. I got some bacon, pepper, and light red fruits but not the exotic spiciness and long finish that I love in La Mouline. It wasn't corked, but perhaps heat damaged? Judgement deferred.

Bright gold color. Intoxicating nose of honeyed apricots, fresh pineapple, caramel. The midpalate on this was incredible. Highly viscous, very complex flavors of honeyed tropical fruits but not sugary at all. A taut acidic spine throughout kept the balance extraordinary. This is still painfully young, and must be a well kept example. Mama mia!

Dark burnt orange color. Immediately open nose of marzipan, apricot, pineapple, honey, and those pears in heavy syrup you get in the can. Huge blast of honeyed fruits, an endless kaleidoscope that I can't put into words. It was rich and sweet but had such great balance because of the massive acids that penetrated deep and the wine seemed almost weightless because of it. A finish that went on endlessly and left you breathlessly staring at the glass. I drank this without any dessert or cheese, who needed it? Holy mackeral! Drink now and for the next 30 years.

I had kind of low expectations for this based on a lot of reviews saying this had peaked and was going downhill. Light golden color with fine bead. A blast of freshly baked bread on the nose with some lemon and clove aromas. No oxidative notes and very little yeastiness. Brisk effervescence and lots of lemony minerals, hazelnut, nutmeg and wonderful balance with powerful acids that carried through on the finish. Lip smacking intensity and lingered for a while on the palate. This greatly exceeded my expectations and tasted quite young to me with a lot of good years of drinking left. Excellent!

Green tinged gold. A nice whiff of clean white fruits on the nose. Tangy, mineral driven on the palate with good acid/fruit balance. This opened up nicely over 2 hours and showed that earthy minerality that I like in Chassagnes. Not overly complex but good drinking right now and I think a few more years of improvement.

Green-gold color. Very reticent nose, with extensive swirling I got some white flowers and some raw oak. Very shut down on the palate. Over 3 hours opened up slightly: there was quite a bit of minerality, wet stones and some granny smith apple fruit but did not expand at the back end. A lot of oak on the finish, the components not meshing very well right now. This was drunk too early but shows a lot of promise.

Very dark purple. Lots of funky aromas on the nose like animal fur, iron, earthiness, and violets. I could also smell the alcohol right away. A lot of rustic tannins on the entry and then huge pepper, garrigue, an odd fig-like note, and dark rasberry fruit. As it warmed up in the glass I detected a pruney, overripe note that detracted. This may have been because it warmed up too much in the decanter. Lots of alcohol on the finish with that roasted note persisting. This showed I think the ripeness of the vintage, although I had not noted this the last several times I had this wine.
