Darn good for the money. Loads of dark fruit, char and earth without the cheap taste normally associated with this price point. A moderate comlexity, full body and loq acidity made this a great week night bottle. 89-90

Tons of potential, so rating on that, not enjoyment today. Nice dark fruit, but just a wall of strong tannins at this stage. Had the acidity to age, so should be a good one in 5 years. Wish I had another bottle.

Medium+ ruby color with a garnet hue showing the slightest signs of age. Black cherry and raspberry are prominent on the nose with just a hint of cola saying “hi I am a California Pinot.” 5-Spice, dried tobacco and smoky notes (think campfire) round out the profile. Medium+ finish make for a quite agreeable wine. I was surprised at how well this wine has integrated as I have had other Kosta Browne wines with 6+ years that felt a little flabby with age.

PnP and sipped without food after tennis. Far and away this was a creamy butterball of a wine. It is a a full bodied wine with some stone fruit, but the butter taste came through in waves and was far and away the most dominant trait.

PnP and sipped a bit chilled by my firepit with Mrs Coupe. Both of us absolutely loved this.Rich , pure tropical fruit, stonefruit flavor, but thing that really stood out was silky creamy mouthfeel. Felt lush and delicious. Easy wine to drink, in no time we were battling for the last pour.

Great effort will seek out more and/or the 16s which are due out soon.

This showed extremely well yesterday with a bit of a chill on it in the backyard. Tropical fruits, a bit of pineapple and some citrus notes. Similar flavors on the palate with a bit of crushed rock. PnP, with St. Louis ribs at Pairings restaurant in Cranford. I loved this wine years ago, and was worried about how it would age. Fortunately, my worries were unfounded. Still a big hedonistic lush dark fruit wine. If anything the fruit has receded a little bit and there is more balance to it than the last bottle i had 3 years ago. Has a great mouthfeel with a hint of dark spice, and the fruit comes at you in waves.

Mrs. Coupe also thought an absolute home run winner. This was so good that I was reminded to go out and get some more of even the newer vintages.

Pop and aerated with Vinturi. Clean cork. Dark purplish garnet but not really thick. Nose of sweetish milk, oak, dark fruits, spices like anise, a very slight hint of fragrant cooked oyster or wet laver. Palate is very similar. Full minus body. Very young wine but already very smooth. Substantial tannins but not astringent. Rich, full, balanced, smooth from start to finish. Medium plus length finish. No need to decant. Surprisingly good wine for the price, $21. At first 92/100.

Soon the lactic, oaky nose and palate become less obvious and the Chilean Carmenere-like character comes through. This 2-year-old wine shows considerable agedness in an hour, interesting.

Decanted.
Ripe, plush and opulent. Sexy notes of fig paste, rich mocha, vanilla, pipe tobacco, baking spice, anise and dark berry compote with hints of dill and coconut, and thats on the nose alone. Palate shows velvety smooth and satiny texture with flavors confirming the nose, fig paste, plum sauce, dark berry compote, clove, nutmeg and toasted star anise with vanilla, mocha, dill and coconut. Showing good structure for a "bad" vintage.

Overall drink now, this wine is delicious now and most likely will not progress past this point.

Composite cork, fairly light ruby color with a slight hint of tawny. For sale pricing, hard to complain. But even after a few hours decant, the wine only seemed to open up to a fairly simple and straightforward red fruit profile, very easy drinking, and seems like a "drink now." Will be curious on my other 2 bottles after a little bit of time in the cellar. Good news is this was a hit at a family dinner due to the approachability.

This one took a little more air to come around, as it was pretty woody at first. Mellowed with air though to aromas of cedar, cinnamon, cherry, orange peel, and licorice. Medium body and acid, med(+) finish, and flavors of cherry, orange, a leathery/earthy component, and licorice. Good stuff.

Earlier than I'd typically open a Barbaresco, but I wanted to check it out while the sale price of $18 was available. Wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but it generally wasn't much, and I would say it did exceed that. A big positive for me is that it did bring nebbiolo character, and I value that much more than "a pretty good red wine" w/ "Barbaresco" or "Barolo" on the label.

Garnet coloring with brickish edges and a clear meniscus. Aromas of cherry cough drop, iodine, and earth, and there's some underlying floral that wants to come out but stays pretty quiet. Medium body and finish, with medium+ acid that kind of teases out the impression of the finish a bit. Flavors of cherry, earth, and iron. Tannins are lightly grippy but not foreboding. My feeling is that this may see improvement in a few years, but not necessarily built for the long run. Overall, I've had Langhe nebbiolo that is better (and worse), but that's not meant as a knock, and I do think it's priced appropriately. Will I buy more? Not sure; perhaps a bottle or two to see how it develops, but I will not be going deep.

An unusual Langhe Valley blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo and Cabernet. This bottle contained quite a lot of sediment, so a careful decanting is recommended. Still a youthful-looking, dark, semi-opaque magenta in color, lightening a bit at the edge. Plenty of menthol, earth and a bit of funk on the nose. Full-bodied and very velvety in texture. Initially bone dry, its ripe, delicious, black cherry and raspberry fruit gradually builds on the palate, achieving excellent depth and focus. Finishes very long, with silky tannins and attractive notes of mineral and spice. Rich, yet quite elegant and refined. Absolutely delicious.

Excellent acidity. Best bottle I have had in a while. Iron fist wrapped in a chocolatey velvet glove. Delicious...Mrs. Coupe also thought it great.

Tasted blind with Runquist's 1448, which I heard is 50% the same petite sirah. This is slightly darker and more opaque, has slightly more viscosity or "legs", is slightly more concentrated with a bit more structure and tannin, and slightly longer aftertaste. It would be hard to tell the difference with only one glass of either to taste, but the differences were there side by side, although subtle. However, at $30 for "R" PS and $18 for 1448, there's not that much of a quality difference. "R" petite sirah has become our favorite and most consistent red wine. We'll still buy plenty of it, but we'll also buy plenty of 1448 for weeknight or more casual meals. Both outstanding!

The rich style might not suit everyone, but if you enjoy this type of Chardonnay this is quite good, especially at the bankruptcy bargain (Last Bottle) price of around $12. PnP at Pairings restaurant with a braised Short rib dinner. Wow...there must be some bottle variation with this. Almost an order of magnitude better than the last bottle I had over a year ago. Still on the softer side, but way more expressive, dark red fruit is pure, prominent, and nothing short of delicious. Well integrated and finely balanced, no matter how hard you try you cannot drink this wine slowly. The wine just disappears from the glass. Relatively low acidity, Finish is long with soft tannins.

Mrs. Coupe said it might have been the best wine she ever drank. It was definitely up there for me. Too bad it was my last bottle
  • Coupe 60 commented:

1/30/13, 7:05 AM - Pete, as I looked through the notes on this and confirmed from my own experience, there seems to be a huge amount of bottle variation with this. This bottle was fantastic...my first bottle only ok...but check the notes they seem to be all over the map...

  • Coupe 60 commented:

5/14/13, 1:21 PM - You could be right about it entering a Dumb-phase. But to be honest my bottle variation remark had more to do with the almost random, really high praise notes interspersed with disappointing notes on the bottle. It did not seem like there was a period of really good, a period of shutdown, and then a period where it re-emerged (at least from a timing of posted TN perspective). But rather intermittent praise and disappointment not seemingly related to date. My two bottles alone were consumed only about 14 months apart...

The fact that the wines started appearing on flash sites like Lot18, where I purchased mine also have me thinking there may be some questionable provenance leading to a variance in taste. But again, that is pure speculation not based on anything concrete.

PnP as a second bottle during dinner at Pairings...Mrs. Coupe does not like this wine, and to be honest, for this bottle I agreed with her. By far the worst of the three splits I have opened up, I can only describe the taste of this bottle as paint lacquer...and not in a good way ...Actually undrinkable...Call it a 60-61 whatever it takes

2/23/13, 3:03 PM - I think may have been a bad bottle, but can't put my finger on what was wrong except for it being really bad. Completely different than the other bottles that I have had of this, though they have been just okay for the most part.

Decanted and drank over about 45 minutes with sandwiches... Light in color, with a degree of translucency. What struck me about this wine was the intensity of the flavors right out of the bottle. I got a strong Cherry cola taste with a hint of spice, that was extremely vibrant and delicious. Had some gritty tannins and could actually use a little balance. Huge long finish that went for days.

Finished the bottle the next day, and the rough edges were smoothed out a bit. Rounder, you could still taste the fruit, but in a more restrained and enjoyable manner... I think that in about 3 years, this wine will absolutely be singing...My strongest endorsement is that after tasting ordered some more...

Excellent...highly recommended

4/26/10, 11:15 AM - believe it or not, I had it with a prosciutto and fresh mozz sandwich... Probably not a textbook pairing...but it still went pretty well...
