Purple in color. 14.6% ABV. Sublime nose of black and blue fruits, coffee and flowers. Full bodied with perfect acidity. Plush and well balanced. Packed with layer upon layer of mouth coating dark fruits. Blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and iron on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Surprisingly approachable now but this has the stuffing to cellar well for another decade. $55 at the winery and retail.

Crimson in color. 14.8% ABV. The nose on this wine seemingly explodes from the glass. Scents of red and black fruits, baking spices and white pepper. Medium body with exquisite acidity. Silky, smooth and well balanced. Black cherry, raspberry liqueur, cloves and pepper on the palate. The finish is very long and supple. Charming Zinfandel that drinks well now but has the structure to age well. Best over the next 3-5 years. $55 at the winery and retail.

This comes up short for me. Dark and extracted and a bit overripe, and a tad sweet. Flat mid palate. On the nose quite nice, but not necessarily on the palate. Disappointing.

100% Sangiovese, 13.5% ABV. Cherry and red fruits, licorice, cedarwood, some earthiness, sweat spicy sequentially. Soft tannin already and balance of acidity and sweetness is awesome. Juicy and delicious, so I cannot stop drinking the bottle.

Disappointed that Colene Clemens released 2020s. They say no smoke taint? Yeah, right. The nose, palate and finish were obviously smoky—SO different from all previous vintages of Dopp Creek that I've enjoyed (2015-2019). And shame on Wine Anthology (NJ) for sending me 2020s when I specifically ordered 2019s (and I have their invoice/receipt as proof).

10/7/22, 12:24 PM - In my somewhat limited experience with Platt fruit (mostly through Flanagan Platt), i have found it definitely needs a few years of cellar time before popping. I bought three of these and plan to let them sit for a few more years. The notes like your on CT seem to confirm that approach..

Thanks for the write-up found it very helpful. Perhaps we will see the swan emerge from its ugly duckling stage in a couple of years and have a couple of better notes on this one

But by the same token - i checked CT before i bought, did not see any note of taint, and as a consumer would have liked to have known. I do not know if my bottle was a one off, or any details other than my one experience.

2017 Petra Zingari Toscana IGT Red Blend
This blend of equal parts merlot, sangiovese, syrah, and petite verdot somehow manages to effectively suppress the varietal characteristics that define each of its components. The result is a perfectly innocuous red wine with no character at all.

My wife put it best: she declared that if this were the $12 "house red" at a restaurant she would not complain, because honestly, what's to complain about?

This wine is very inoffensive, but sadly, that's the best thing I can say about it.

Decanted for about 15 minutes and drank over next 30 minutes or so with grilled NY Strip. This wine is in a great place right now. To be honest, we have not been drinking much Cabernet Sauvignon lately, and this wine really had me questioning why. Plus body, bur remarkably balanced, dark fruit and cassis, very well balanced all parts in harmony right now. Sweet tannins on finish.

Superb effort, went great with the steak

This was really good - very typical PN.. nice forest, barnyard aromas, not crazy stinky. Light in color & body, it was ideal as a starter alone. A bit fresh and juicy/mouth watering. It was crystal clear, ruby red in color, nice medium- long finish. Very good and very happy with this wine.
At $10 it was a steal. If I had only known when I purchased the initial case, I would have bought more!

Medium-light ruby-garnet. PnP – a very delicate and captivating nose – raspberry, light cherries, a bit of blueberry, spices, a hint of watermelon, and a bit of a root beer/sassafras aroma. At around 45 minutes of decanting – the nose is popping with fruits, flowers, and a hint of pine. Light bodied, bright acidity, and the palate matches the nose. Fruity and dry. Well integrated velvety tannins. Medium-long tart cherry finish with gentle oak flavors including black pepper, vanilla, and cedar with a bit of sassafras that pulls it all together. Finish fades to a granite minerality that holds on.

This is a great wine for sipping since there seems to be a constant evolution for the first few hours in the glass and decanter. At the $20 a bottle it’s an absolute steal. I am curious how this wine will evolve, assuming we can keep our hands off them. I regret not buying at least another six-pack of this now.

I really enjoyed this wine, although I hated opening it so young. It has those thick fruit tannins you expect from California Syrah, but this wine also has a funky, earthy mid-palate that reminds me of an Hermitage or Cornas. It's robust, rich, but not particularly aggressive. It's good on its own or with food. It's a baby now - buy several and enjoy them over the years, it should have a fun evolution.
  • Coupe 60 commented:

  • Coupe 60 commented:

5/29/21, 8:08 AM - First off, thank you for your thoughts on this, it is really appreciated.

I had indeed expected the Petrol, and that does not bother me. I think what caught me by surprise was that I thought the wine was almost syrupy. I will certainly decant if i purchase again. As for sweetness, I probably should have done a bit more research, but to borrow a scale from Riesling, I was expecting something on the order of maybe a Spatlese (maybe close to a Kabinett side of the scale), and instead got something that reminded me more of an an Auslese.

{winery visit} It's a shame there's a score attached to this NV wine (one that changes, continuously, as blends change from year to year, so a static number means absolutely nothing) as it's really very good. A solid marriage between your favorite quaffing red and one of your prized wines you'd put into the very good category. Structured, approachable, juicy, pure, with bright aromas and great sapidity. A really crazy value, buy all you can find. recommended+

I tried to open with regular corkscrew and brittle cork immediately broke apart. Fortunately, was able to salvage it with Ah So opener without losing the cork in the bottle.

There seems to be a bit of controversy with this bottling. I agree it is on the downward slope, but still feel it is enjoyable. For me it was all black tea with a touch, but almost absent fruit and very little tannins. Still, it is smoot and enjoyable if you do not go in with a lot of expectations. You can really taste the age of this 22 year old bottle. Drank over two nights with no real difference so I would not hold bottles much longer.

Stagecoach and Beckstoffer GIII fruit because of course you make rosé from that. You could smell the strawberries from across the room when I popped the cork. Still pretty bracing and probably needs another couple of months to calm down, but this is yet another friggin' success for these guys, who haven't yet met a grape they can't do something intensely interesting with. We had this with roasted Pasturebird chicken and they went together perfectly. Best upon opening and again about two hours later -- in between it seemed to be too acidic for my taste, though girlfriend tells me I'm incorrect. Fantastic. A mix of summa, occidental, and platt fruit from what i was told. red fruits, darker spices, wet rocks, and forest funk. red fruit and rocks on the palate. morey-st.denis meets the russian river. this is a winner. drink now through 2026

Medium+ ruby color with a garnet hue showing the slightest signs of age. Black cherry and raspberry are prominent on the nose with just a hint of cola saying “hi I am a California Pinot.” 5-Spice, dried tobacco and smoky notes (think campfire) round out the profile. Medium+ finish make for a quite agreeable wine. I was surprised at how well this wine has integrated as I have had other Kosta Browne wines with 6+ years that felt a little flabby with age.

PnP and sipped without food after tennis. Far and away this was a creamy butterball of a wine. It is a a full bodied wine with some stone fruit, but the butter taste came through in waves and was far and away the most dominant trait.

I make those comments not to criticize but to describe. It is successful at doing what it sets out to do, but it will not be a wine for everyone.

PnP and sipped a bit chilled by my firepit with Mrs Coupe. Both of us absolutely loved this.Rich , pure tropical fruit, stonefruit flavor, but thing that really stood out was silky creamy mouthfeel. Felt lush and delicious. Easy wine to drink, in no time we were battling for the last pour.

Great effort will seek out more and/or the 16s which are due out soon.

This showed extremely well yesterday with a bit of a chill on it in the backyard. Tropical fruits, a bit of pineapple and some citrus notes. Similar flavors on the palate with a bit of crushed rock. Smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel. Paired great with grilled shrimp skewers with an herb marinade and avocado salsa.

PnP, with St. Louis ribs at Pairings restaurant in Cranford. I loved this wine years ago, and was worried about how it would age. Fortunately, my worries were unfounded. Still a big hedonistic lush dark fruit wine. If anything the fruit has receded a little bit and there is more balance to it than the last bottle i had 3 years ago. Has a great mouthfeel with a hint of dark spice, and the fruit comes at you in waves.

Mrs. Coupe also thought an absolute home run winner. This was so good that I was reminded to go out and get some more of even the newer vintages.

Pop and aerated with Vinturi. Clean cork. Dark purplish garnet but not really thick. Nose of sweetish milk, oak, dark fruits, spices like anise, a very slight hint of fragrant cooked oyster or wet laver. Palate is very similar. Full minus body. Very young wine but already very smooth. Substantial tannins but not astringent. Rich, full, balanced, smooth from start to finish. Medium plus length finish. No need to decant. Surprisingly good wine for the price, $21. At first 92/100.

Soon the lactic, oaky nose and palate become less obvious and the Chilean Carmenere-like character comes through. This 2-year-old wine shows considerable agedness in an hour, interesting.
  • Coupe 60 commented:

9/18/16, 2:12 PM - interesting note on the Carmenere. As I drank it over a couple of hours last night, said same thing to myself. Reminded me a little of Purple Anvel

Drinking well at this point.
Decanted.
Ripe, plush and opulent. Sexy notes of fig paste, rich mocha, vanilla, pipe tobacco, baking spice, anise and dark berry compote with hints of dill and coconut, and thats on the nose alone. Palate shows velvety smooth and satiny texture with flavors confirming the nose, fig paste, plum sauce, dark berry compote, clove, nutmeg and toasted star anise with vanilla, mocha, dill and coconut. Showing good structure for a "bad" vintage.

Overall drink now, this wine is delicious now and most likely will not progress past this point.

Composite cork, fairly light ruby color with a slight hint of tawny. For sale pricing, hard to complain. But even after a few hours decant, the wine only seemed to open up to a fairly simple and straightforward red fruit profile, very easy drinking, and seems like a "drink now." Will be curious on my other 2 bottles after a little bit of time in the cellar. Good news is this was a hit at a family dinner due to the approachability.
