85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% alcohol.

Really deep and seductive aromas with richer fruits of plums, blackberries, cedar, pepper, leather and wet stones. Really full-bodied and energetic wine that gives a raw berry feeling that really seduces with red ripe plums, raspberries, wood and charcoal. Refined and delicate. Good acidity and good tannin structure. Long and attractive finish. A wonderful wine from Pomerol that has great potential in the future. 97 points. For now. (97-99p)

2010 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco Nebbiolo
Piedmont -- Aldo Conterno Winery Visit: 6 wks on the skins, 32 month in wood (?). An amazing wine. Spicy, rich nose of sap, roses, meat. Long, with a gorgeous balance between mineral wild berry juice, ripe fruit, and integrated though present tannins. Complex nose, soil close to Cicala in composition, rich in blue magnesium. Conterno did produce Gran Bussia in ’10; yet Romirasco is GS, for all practical purposes. Tasting ’10 Romirasco next to ’06 Gran Bussia (70% Romirasco, 15% each of Colonello and Cicala) shows just what a tremendous value Romirasco is. This wine should be and will be selling for the price of GS – grab it while you can. The best ’10 Barolo I’ve tasted. Described Aldo Conterno Baroli in the past as Burgundian in style, but this is different. The heft, viscosity is more reminiscent of a Guigal single vineyard Cote Rotie. Galloni is simply off the mark with this gem.

This is extraordinary. The wine is so silky, it is effortless to taste and drink. The fruits paint your palate. But the wine is light on its feet. Sensuous, sexy and racy, the fruit offers a melange of red and black cherries, plums. In the finish you find a griotte sensation that sticks with you for close to 60 seconds. This perfect mix of elegance and purity should age effortlessly for decades.

91 poeng.

Skogsbær, lett solbær, lakris, lær, tung skogbunn, herlige urter og mørk brent kaffe. Kanskje vel herbal for noen.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is everything and nothing, with a few outliers. On the traditional side, Le Vieux Donjon maintains consistency of style, quality, and pleasure, even in off vintages. For ultra-modern hedonistic experiences, one need look no further than Clos Saint Jean's various offerings. Domaine du Pégaü wines fall somewhere between these two styles.

Then, there is Château de Beaucastel, and this vintage in particular. Vintage consistency with Beaucastel lies in its cleanness and its comparatively high Mourvèdre component. Otherwise, the last several vintages have presented marked variations in their youths. In recent (wine) memory, this vintage is most similar in bouquet and profile to the 2008, albeit prettier, fuller, and with more power. By comparison, the 2010 was dark and brooding, the 2011, 2012, and 2013 were taut, and showed a few angularities of youth. This vintage features a strikingly forward and inviting style.

Tasted over three days. Pulled the corked, inhaled the perfume, poured a half ounce, tasted it, decided that it did not need decanting, and left the bottle to breathe for a few hours. Bouquet of pure red sexy!!! All flavors and essences raspberry (fresh, dried, liqueurs, tea leaf, potpourri), strawberry, rhubarb, pomegranate, prickly pear, assorted red plums, and rooibos. The tartness of sweetened cranberry, lingonberry, and acerola backed all of this tangy red substance, along with green peppercorns, white pepper, and herbs. The wine also shows light, yet distinct, savory, sanguine, and mineral veins, (probably imparted by the combination of Mourvèdre and Cinsault). The wine tasted exactly as it smelled, with all elements coming forward in seductive layers. Mourvèdre-imparted gritty tannins offered a powerful expression of structure, in complete harmony with Grenache-imparted powdery tannins. Tang, with hints of sweetened tartness, showed prominently at the back and lingered through a long powdery finish. Fresh, vivacious, lifted, its open knit style entirely charming.

More of the same on the second day, the wine held its form. Perhaps surprisingly so, it had added nothing new. The third day revealed a slightly 'sweeter' wine, namely less tartness and more purple berry notes, blackberry in particular. It had also added a touch more weight, with the mineral veins more noticeable.

The one word I would us to describe this wine is: RIPE! In this way, it reminded me of the same vintage Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett. (Ultra pretty, but leaving questions of real substance, and thus, long-term aging potential.) Indeed, this three day experience left me with a few questions. Will this vintage enter the customary dumb phase? Who knows? Maybe, is my best guess. Will it add depth and interest with age? Probably, at least to a limited extent. (If it goes beyond that, hold-the-friggin'-phone!!!...as it will be amazing!) Would I bet on it achieving this level? No.

The experience also left me with a few thoughts. The wine imparts no sense of extraction, almost as if it was crafted from free run juice. Given its clean and open style, this fruit forward wine is almost fruity enough to make a blind taster wonder if it is a New World, Châteauneuf-du-Pape tribute. Several elements pull to the Old World though: overall balance, underlying savoriness, sublime minerality, and the absence of obtrusive alcohol. The most rustic element to this wine is the Mourvèdre's firmness and grip. Overall, almost impossible to not like, as it is just that pretty. This noted, the wine sort of left me hanging in that it lacked real interest factors, no hooks, if you will. 94-95.

Www.botti.no

From Coravin at Chateau. Ruby color with some modest bricking. Nose abounds with leather and some light animal/brett/cheese. Palate is red fruit dominant: strawberry and pomegranate, but also some black currant. Medium+ finish and still some discernable grip. Concentrated and slightly tart, but also fully evolved with every aspect in nice harmony. The clear winner of the vertical.

Wow. And I thought its little Brother the 2005 904 that I drank recently was good!
This is a dark red and clearly still youthful. The nose is stunning with dark fruit, earthy damp forest floor, wood, spice and blood. Medium bodied and brimming with to the core with dark berries enveloped in a beautifully integrated frame of soft and sweet tannins. There are complex overtones of frost floor, wood and leather in the mid palate with a long and sweet spice infused finish stained with blood. All this with a splash of fresh acidity to maintain balance. What a beautifully balanced classical Rioja.
Now the big question, would I rather have one bottle of this of two of the 2005 904. I would probably take two of the 904, drink one now and lay the other down for a few years. With another 4 years of bottle age on the 904 there will be little to chose between theses two gems. But if you want an amazing Rioja to drink today, buy this and you will not be disappointed.

Tasted along with the Pichon Baron '10, this was quite a differece style, despite the approx same amount of use of Cab.sauv. This super-tuscan offered a more reserved aromas of red fruit and a lighter purple / red colour. Medium/full-bodied wine, with super-fresh and ripe blackberry and Cherry fruit at the palate. (Pop and pour.) Very dark and spicy nose with overt oak notes on the notes. The palate is slightly sweet with a lot of brown spice and ripe dark fruit (dare I say it, but slightly Dujac-y), but that's where the good things end. The oak is loud and obnoxious, the fruit's too jammy, the finish comes off too hot, and the structure too soft. This is a bottle of wine full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Perhaps this will integrate and improve with time, but I wouldn't put any money on it. (Second day.) The nose has gotten more high-toned, and there's a bit of sickly sweetness to it. Reminds me a bit of diethyl ether. The tannins have picked up a little bit of heft (the (in)famous Klapp/Burton wall?), but that's actually a good thing, since it does provide more of a backbone to the amorphous blob that this was yesterday. The acidity is still lacking and the oak still obnoxious. Here's hoping it's better on day 3. (Third day.) It wasn't.

Domaine Faiveley continues to deliver ...: This is an outstanding Corton, I'm tempted to say better than the excellent 2012 Clos des Cortons I tasted three weeks ago. It is certainly more forward and approachable than the '12. The '11 probably benefited from the 18 hours airtime, and I would seriously decant this wine if tempted to open it young. Bright ruby colour. A lovely Corton nose of spice, warm earth, red plums and red roses, with some chalky and graphite minerals in the background. A lovely Corton nose. On palate, a big wine with real matière, serious dry extract and power, but surprisingly, as of now, open textured. The flavours are spicy red plums, red currants, warm earth, red liquorice and some of that Corton iron and chalk on the long finish. On the back palate, you are reminded of the large scaled (but fine gained) tannins and all of the power held in check. Presumably this wine will shut down and need 20 years cellar time (or you could drink it now!)

Best of the Best Tasting (Binny's Lincoln Park): Unbelievable wine.....easily wine of the night for me and certainly the best wine I have ever tasted to-date. Amazing, very mature/dark profile. Extremely long finish. Needs a decade to integrate. I now know why people spend hundreds of dollars on good Bordeaux!

8/20/14, 2:38 AM - Hi! Have a change to buy a bottle for 200 us dollar. Worth it?

  • Andre Brattland commented:

8/21/14, 12:35 PM - Thank you for the comment. The actually price i can get it for, is $185. I still consider the wine, after Ch Pavie was promoted to A-class the prices rised a lot, so I will not get any 11 or 12 vintage for that price.

Nose features sweet tobacco, washed-rind cheese, herbs and a hint of barnyard. Fresh, sweet dark cherries lead on the palate, making this very approachable and easy to drink, especially when compared to the CHB. Explodes into the mid-palate with tea, herbs, tobacco, mocha and a touch of earth. Little pops of flavor tease the palate on the intensely long finish. I only had a small glass but it evolved nicely over the time I had with it. Hard to fathom paying $700 for a single bottle, but it sure tastes good.

    4/6/14, 1:52 PM - I can get it for $ 275, worth to buy a bottle? I'm in a doubt.

4/24/14, 1:55 PM - Thanks for your comment. I used my money at the 2008 vintage of leoville las cases and 2008 ch.Palmer for total 400 us dollar instead. Hope it will be worth it :-)

Ok wine. Still little bit tannic and uneven. Could develop more. Or not.
  • Andre Brattland commented:

2/16/14, 8:59 AM - Im not sure :-) The wine would for sure develop, but im not sure it would be any better. Nothing really put to together. The Issan '10 was much better then 05' Calon-Segur. Maybe im not the biggest fan of St.Estephe-wines. Had a 87' Calon-Segur, and Didn't like that wine eather.
