2001 Penfolds Grange South Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah
SobeWFF. My first experience with Grange and it’s definitely a must have if you can afford it. 100% American oak. Grange brings a sweet and racy dark fruits sprinkled with a dusty salinity that is extremely rewarding and refreshing at the same time. This 2001 is aging well with tertiary flavors of dried herbs and smoked meats, and a port-like disposition coming along and a Bourbon-like tinge of sweet must. The palate is fat and I mean it in a good way, chewy fatty tannins that are sweet and a joy to have. This is a generational wine for your grandkids - superb.

SobeWFF. Spends 12 months in large vats. Fruit is sourced from Barossa and McLaren but this year includes Adelaide Hills. 96/7 Shiraz Cab mix. The cooler Adelaide Hills fruit shines through on the bouquet with a floral fresh racy berries. Thick chewy tannins on the palate with hints of espresso and black pepper. Quite similar to Central coast CA Syrah.

Not the opulence and depth one comes to expect from hyped up 100 pt by Parker, however nevertheless it is a muscular wine with lots of fruits, oak, and sweet tannins. It lacks a bit of depth which I suppose can come with age.

Medium nose of earth and crushed fruit, not as effusive as other Howell. Delicious flavors of red berries macerated with dark earth. Sweet tannins and medium to long perfumed finish. Excellent wine although just a notch below outstanding.

100 Point (Parker or other) Wine Dinner Organized by Steve for 6 "Wine Guys" (The Prime Rib, Philadelphia): From 375ml bottle, the cork was wet and slippery coming out and then broke off near the end, so I feared total oxidation before tasting this after decanting at 2pm, then replacing in the bottle and traveling to Philadelphia for dinner. The nose was slightly oxidized but that seemed to blow off in the glass shortly after pouring. The wine was a deep copper/apricot color. The nose and palate seemed to reflect that with Huge grilled apricot flavor, honey and caramelized sugar. This was unctuous in your mouth and yet still showing some brightness of flavor. The finish was extremely long. I have been waiting for probably 30 years to have this wine as it was one of my first purchases of a Beerenauslese from a friend's cellar in the mid-1980's. It was worth the wait. Extraordinary!

Sweet nose showed ripe lemons, red apples and apple rind, along with some toasty spice, a bit of earth and just that touch of umami. There were little scents of herb and pepper floating around on top as well. Palate was crisp, clean and balance, with a nice sense of fruity sweetness and clean, crystallined fruit flavours - green apple shading into pineapple notes. Finish was mid-length, with touches of spice. Nice, almost too "nice", so that it almost lack a sense of personality. Still though, great elegance and very nice balance. Yummy start to the meal.

A stunning wine and proof positive that the "forever-burly" 1986s are really hitting their stride. After an 8-hour Audouze, this was humming. A knockout perfume full of cassis, turned earth, smoke, and leather. An exceptionally balanced-but-richly-fruited palate, with the tannins perfectly integrated. No, this isn't some powerhouse heavyweight, but it is an exceptional middleweight that truly shows the best of what Bordeaux is all about.

Cigar box, jammy black raspberry, mint, ash, tobacco, cedar wood, cloves, cinnamon and wet forest floor notes start the fireworks. On the palate, the rich, sensuous, flamboyant, showy wine is a hedonistic treat for the senses from start to finish. The early harvest took place between September 15 and September 25. Opened at the Anvil Club. Bottle was abandoned in a wine locker by a former member. Very dubious condition, but a light shone nicely clear through the bottle. Cork was mush, and the club didn't have an Ah-so, so we eventually pushed the cork into the bottle and strained through a coffee filter into a decanter. Color was still dark with no bricking. Nose had that oh so faint sweat sock, along with typical Bordeaux profile and some dark fruits. Palate was much better than the nose, and actually improved over the course of an hour or so. Black fruits, leather and tobacco with a decent finish. Provenance was obviously an issue here, but this was a very pleasant surprise. Not as lovely as the pristine bottle that Allred opened for us in 2013, but not too shabby either. Between the staff and a few other members at the bar, the bottle was fully consumed.

Drank over two days; dark purple in color. Opened mid afternoon, poured off a couple of ounces, lingered over the glass, and let the bottle sit for a few hours. Reticent nose and incredibly tight from the outset, the 2005 Pavie was open by comparison. By late evening, the nose began to reveal bay leaf, savory elements, Mediterranean herbs, Tuscan terroir, and red meats. The palate showed exceptional richness and depth. Loads of fine dusty tannins dance gracefully across the tongue, clamp down at the back, and hold on through a generous finish. The wine was equally tight on the second day, though it showed more sanguinity and put on more weight.

I sampled the 2007 vintage last year, compliments of Bam_Man, and that wine was sleek, elegant, and sexy by comparison. This vintage is built for the long haul; it is massively concentrated and made in weighty, almost muddy style. 12/2/13, 7:44 AM - What worked for me the first time I tried it was a double decant re-cork and in the cellar for 12h. It bring down the tannins a bit and dials up the fruit a notch. In case you need to have it sooner ; )

10h double decant a la Bordelaise. Full body red with minor bricking on the edge. This has a big bold brooding nose that is port-like with raisined raspberries, licorice, notes of truffle, and some heat and mint in the back. Palate is velvety in the entry, lots of loamy earth, good minerality, decent cool blue fruits, wrapped in sweet alcoholic big tannins that retain the flavor in the mouth. This expansive wine finishes medium with sweet tannins and dried tiny fruits. This great terroir shone through the torrid 2003 vintage in supplementing this otherwise port-of-a-wine, with solid complexity and depth. This was a wine to enjoy young. A wine deserving of my 300th TN on cellartracker!

This keeps getting better each time I taste it. Powerful, masculine, concentrated and tannic, this has all the right stuff to age. It's cassis, tobacco, cedar and earthy profile scream Pauillac. Give it a few hours in the decanter, if you can hold off, another 3-5 years will add even more complexity. This sold for close to $25 as a future!

Dumbfounded by Dominus (Kirkland, WA): Pickle-barrel nose. Root beer, brett, spicy, forest floor. Definitely near the end of its life. Austere. Fruit is all dried up. Faint almond notes on the finish. Nose is better than the palate.

Some great wines to help Public Television (WVIZ World Series of Wine Seminar): An RP 100 pointer. I love public TV! Purple in color. Ruby at the rim. This is very tight. Deep, but hard to tell what's going on. Cassis and blueberries and some cigar. A wall of tannins on drinking. Great acidity though. Mouth filing. Lots of fruit, mostly black currants and dark cherries. Slightly warming but not hot. This is so primary. It may be a 100 pointer some day. Today, its work to analyze, but there is so much there here. Hope I am lucky enough to try this again sometime, but at $600, I am not holding my breath.

Utilizing a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot. The wine reached 13.2% alcohol. The wine will be aged in 80% new oak. The assemblage features one of the highest concentrations of Cabernet Sauvignon found in modern times. Ruby in color, smoke, truffle, earth, cassis, vanilla and tobacco scents are found in the perfume. Medium bodied, ripe and soft, there is a fresh, vibrant feeling in the wine, ending with crisp cassis flavors. 92-93 Pts

Tasted at Joseph Phelps dinner. 92+ pts. This came out great. A real napa valley cabernet, packed full of dark fruits, tobacco, rich blueberries, and firm sweet tannins. Elegant and delicious, I really liked this one a lot. Great finish.

This was so fat, lush and sexy. The color was akin to dark, purple and black ink. Filled with gobs of blue and fruit, licorice and cassis. Great plush, opulent mouth feel and finish that keeps on going. This is a stellar expression of Napa Cabernet. While the wine checks in at over 15% alcohol, you'd never know it with it's wealth of ripe fruit

The 2008 Montrose is deeply colored. Oak, black and red fruit made complex by tobacco notes are easy to find on the nose. The wine is concentrated. On the palate, sensations of ripe, dark black fruits fill your mouth. The tannins are polished with good sensations of freshness in the finish. This a refined wine for the vintage. 93-95 Pts

Seattle Tasting Group does Aussie Shiraz (Bellevue, WA): This was my favorite of the 5 year vertical. Soy, ash, some VA and violet. Oh my, this shows AMAZING structure, a bit drying, simply HUGE. What an utterly fantastic palate, loaded with crushed raspberry and licorice. A lot to like here.
