Dusty dark fruit - plums and cherries - earth, chocolate, cloves. A fruit-forward modern style, sweet and pleasing, with chocolate covered cherries and spicy stewed fruit. Not complex but so full-bodied it scores on instant pleasure. A fruitbomb!

Complex nose of cassis, mint, and very tertiary vanillin and licorice. An intense burst of sweet raspberry flavor leads to a mid-palate of lead and leather. The finish is flamboyant oak integrated with subtle baking spice. There's an amazing amount of life left in this wine, probably 10 years at least. A powerhouse!

Light straw yellow. Pungent lemon cake and apricots with notes of gasoline. Starts sweet and unctuous, with ripe yellow waxy fruit, pears and citrus. Silky oak is subtly integrated with the sweetness. A delight that needs to be drunk pretty quickly.

Inky violet red color. Dark chocolate, crème de cassis, and rare earth minerals. Palate of tart blue fruit, black pepper, cloves, and espresso. Gripping tannins on a decent length finish. This wine is surprisingly luxurious and even needs a few years to peak.

Violets, cassis, chocolate, plums, and spice. Tart, ripe red fruit with mocha and crème de cassis. A bucket of merlot that's ready to drink deep, and good value from a great vintage. Wish I had bought more than 2 bottles!

Terracotta red color. Strawberry rhubarb pie, chocolate chai, tertiary vanilla and port. Smooth and sappy red berry fruit that tastes a bit cooked. Medium finish with a dusting of spice. It has just enough classic pinot character to score.

Nose of lime, marmalade, and honey, with floral and pear notes. Rich, sweet fruit, guessing its reisling but no info anywhere. Thinner up front than a Sauternes and not as complex but good for BC and it ages effortlessly.

2004 Château Valandraud St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)

Inky black with a ruby rim. Leafy undergrowth, mushrooms, coffee, sarsaparilla nose. Starts with almost enough dark plum and cherry fruit, mocha, and ripe acidity to balance the gripping tannins. Maybe too much oak for this vintage but definitely a powerhouse.
White - Sparkling

Effervescent crystal yellow. Strong nose of brioche, poached pear, and nutmeg. Powerhouse palate: apple zest, baking yeast, concentrated extraction, decadent wealth. Excellent vintage. I would rather drink one of these than a year of cheap champagne!

Bricking garnet color. Black cherries and forest berries, with cinnamon and licorice. Dense dark fruit, tart lite spice, fine-tuned tannins, but fading life. It scores on powerhouse juice, at this point propped up on planks of oak, but just strong enough to stand the test of 10 years. A delight if not the wine of the night.

Cherry and raspberry scents with a lite dusting of oak. Fruit-forward on the palate too, with tart red and purple fruit and dark roast notes. Dense but not complex, it has sweetness up front and a tart ripe finish, nice pinot nature if not lengthy layers.

Coffee, chocolate, dark fruit. Not a classic fruitbomb - more coffee and spice than sweet fruit, but smooth and concentrated like a fruitbomb should be.

Decent village wine. All elements in balance but nothing particularly shines. Red fruit, dusty oak, vanilla spice.

Intense nose: ink and lead, cassis, cedar, and eucalyptus. Dry, almost bitter, palate, but air improves it vastly. Rich, cooked fruit - blackberries and blueberries, dark chocolate, herbaceous notes. Should last 10 years but drinks well now.

Inky dark ruby red. Dusty nose -- pen ink, cooked dark fruit, secondary licorice and driftwood. After a quick thin start the fruit concentrates mid-palate -- tar, blueberries, black pepper, vanilla. A complex medley of sweet delicious compote with subtle spice and leather notes. A fruitbomb with enough substance to age gracefully and still put out.

Spicy forest fruit on the nose. Tart red fruit on the palate with plenty of smoky cedar, if anything too much. Not too typical or great QPR, but still decent pinot noir.

Fairly complex nose of cassis, wet foliage, cedar, vanilla, and licorice. A bit thin up front but well-structured, with inky dark fruit, elegant sweet spice, and a dusty oak finish. Good QPR if not great wine.

Slightly closed nose of forest foliage and fruit, spicy oak, and licorice root. On the palate it is medium bodied with the pithy oak carrying the fragile fruit. A simple village wine with decent qualities but drink soon.

Funky earthy cassis and violets scents, with tertiary vanilla and truffles. Late in its drinking window but still delicious, this wine improves with air and achieves a nice balance of red fruit, sweet spice, and mellow tannin. It starts with forest fruit and currants and ends with mocha and fine tuned oak. A soft, mature, easy-drinking wine.

Bright leggy ruby red. Raisiny, pruny, cherries and raspberries, tertiary licorice and vanilla. Concentrated ripe red fruit, a bit cooked and medicinal, mid palate garrigue, and a lengthy finish, both sweet and spicy. Its great but typical of CdPs its one dimensional, concentrated soupy fruit but not really complex.

Very peaty scents, with orange peel and wood notes. Similar palate, an underpinning of peat with a spicy oak follow thru. Not as complicated as I'd like but decent for the price and the alcohol is in check at 40%.

Cooked dark fruit scents with spice and driftwood. Better in the mouth: a nice balance of chocolate, raisin, spice, and tobacco flavors with secondary notes of mint, eucalyptus, and vanilla. Seemed closed when we opened it but develops quickly in the glass. Really good QPR and worth stocking up on if you can find it.

Bright dark ruby red. Pen ink, prunes, baked cherries and berries, cloves. Similar palate of inky dark fruit, mocha, and baking spice. Lite tannins and pleasant acidity. A typical Australian fruitbomb and nice example of this lesser varietal. It wears a little thin over the course of a bottle but still is good value.

Inky ruby color. Jammy smelling dark berries, mocha, with secondary licorice. A fruitbomb it is, with blueberries and plums, chocolate covered cherries, and dark roast. Nice balance of acidity and silky oak. I have not had this since the 2003 and it has improved immensely. An ambitious Malbec blend!

Medium bricking garnet. Tight nose of cooked red fruit, tobacco leaf, and tertiary spice and vanilla. A complex, evolved wine with concentration and subtlety. Layers of strawberries, spice, and oak coat the palate, balanced by crisp acidity. Almost great but overall thinness holds it back.

Inky cassis scents, with tobacco leaf and secondary spice and vanilla. Very fruity and acidic, with jammy red berries and ripe cherries. Just a hint of oak lets the fruit sing. I find this a bit sweet but not cloying. A new world, fruitbomb style claret. Good for BC.

Funny nose of chocolaty red fruit followed by a ton of vanillin. A slight bitter aftertaste but generally better on the palate, and air helps balance it out. Sweet red berries, piercing acidity, and really smooth ingrained tannins. Concentrated if not complicated.

Inky dark ruby rimmed color. Complex nose of earthy spice, berry liqueur, coffee and oak, with secondary vanilla and licorice. Not quite as intense palate - dark chocolate and dark roast, baking spice, plums, and fine sweet tannins. Delicious and good value!

Blueberry jam, earth, pencil lead, spice and vanilla. Starts acidic and a tiny bit thin. Dark plums and berries, mocha, and oak. Air brings out more balance but this lacks focus and concentration. Decent dark merlot fruit but not great value.

Dusty nose of wild strawberries, sweet spice, and minerally chalk. Tart red fruit on the palate, with sawdust notes but not propped up on oak - the fruit is the star here. Sour plums with decent lengthy layers of flavor. Unusual pinot but it scores on concentration.

Nice nose of peat, spice, and grain. Mostly peat on the palate, with a surprising amount of sugar too. Not used to sweet scotch but love bourbon so maybe it will grow on me. A nutty confection with potential, but is it too cloying?

Fruit forward on the nose and palate: red berries and cherries with notes of undergrowth. Smooth and seductive if not long and layered. Actually reminds more of a good Beaujolais: juicy and lite, fruity and delicious.

Earth and spice dominate the nose, with pencil lead and lots of oak. The palate is similar -- plums, graphite, sharp spice, grainy wood, dark chocolate with a hint of mint. All the elements are nicely balanced in this wine. Not spectacular but a decent effort from this middling vintage.

Inky ruby color. Faint nose of blue and black berry preserves and pies. Better palate of dark stewed berries and plums that starts with unctuous but subdued flavors, offers soothing tannins mid-palate, and finishes with a burst of sweet acidity. A pretty hard varietal to make great but this is one of the best.

Sour cherries, stewed prunes, some spice and earth, tertiary licorice. On the palate too it's more like a passimento - craisins, cooked plums and cherries, olives, herbs, barnyard. Really acidic upfront but with enough chewiness to linger, it's good if not typical - more Italian than French.

Bright dark violet red. Rustic tart cherry and red berry scents with herbaceous notes. Also rustic, simple but delicious red fruit on the palate, with nice acidity and oak that melts on the tongue it's so fine-grained. A pretty reliable wine over the years.

A mini-vertical: 2006 and 2007. The '06 is a dense violet ruby color with a nose of cassis, menthol, violets, crushed rock, and chocolate. Still needing a bit of time; air helps open it out: dark, earthy red fruit with chewy tannins but medium length. Good but not spectacular - 90 pts. The '07 is more open on the nose and palate, spicier, brambly, and tarry, but not as complex. Dark berries and plums with sweet and black spice. Once again it is medium length and this ones not as tannic - 89 pts. 2 pretty middling vintages, decent but not the greatest QPR.
