Opaque purple color turning orange violet at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose gives off perfumed, high octane aromas of dark chocolate, cola, and cardamom on dark berries. The palate is full-bodied, intense and persistent. Flavors of iodine, seared meat, blackberries, and espresso form the core. The mid palate is solid, and lends to a full throttle finish with hints of cocoa chips, and ultra refined tannins. Drink now with a 30-minute decant until 2034.

Tasted this blind. It has a perfect medium garnet color tapering evenly and elegantly towards the rim. Notes of smoke, incense, forest floor and dried herbs complement the red fruits that are starting to take a back seat given this age. Finishes long and very elegantly with silky sweet tannins. Overall, the color, aromas, acidity, and texture all hold up in a perfect, delicate balance. Drink now with a 40-minute decant or between 2020 to 2035. 96+

This is the second wine of Château Lascombes, and gratifyingly does not disappoint. Opaque purple color turning ruby at the rim with a transparent edge. Lots of alcohol (14%) providing early-drinking enjoyment, albeit balanced with gripping acidity that makes this drink such a sumptuous delight. The nose gives off highly perfumed notes of mentholated black berries with notes of incense and scorched earth. Flavors of black currants, bitter dark chocolate, espresso, and lead pencil form the core of this elegant, finely-tuned second wine. Finishes on a high note with lively, elegant tannins. This was meant to be drunk young, but will provide continued enjoyment until 2025.

Opaque purple color turning dark ruby at the rim. The whiffs from the glass appear blunt, but slowly evolves to brooding dark fruit, incense, menthol and iodine. The palate reveals a full, dense body loaded with blackberry, creme de cassis, and espresso followed by a texture laden by tannins that have substantially mellowed by its tenth year since harvest. There’s still a bit of tightness that makes it perfectly sumptuous at this stage, then releases a long, silky finish with hints of pencil lead. This by far has been the best I’ve tasted from the Château. Drink now with a 15-minute decant until 2034.

Dark crimson color receiving notable gradients of orange rust toward the rim due to its age. It required at least 30 minutes of decanting for the nose to open up revealing dried herbs, tobacco and forest floor amidst the black fruits. The palate is massive, and intensifies toward the mid palate revealing darkened cherries, raspberry, cranberry and smoked meat. The 15% Cabernet Sauvignon could easily be mistaken for Cabernet Franc due to its fleshy mouthfeel, but definitely noticeable that this is a Tempranillo blend. The tannins elegantly negotiate the long, long dusty finish. First growth indeed. Drink now with a 45-mintute decant until 2030.

Dark purple ruby color turning orange rust at the rim with a reflective edge. Notes of perfumed violets, incense, currants and wet leather on the nose. This full-bodied, silky-textured showing is quite impressive, and one of the best I’ve tasted from this Château. With relatively medium-to-low alcohol levels, it exhibits bright acidity and much vibrancy. Flavors of black olives, fig, dark chocolate, tobacco, espresso and some new oak form the core, and thrusts a long, fleshy, mentholated finish with hints of scorched earth. Drink now with a 30-minute decant until 2035 and watch it evolve!

Medium garnet turning orange rust at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose is very floral and gives off orange peel, zesty fruits and incense. This medium-bodied wine is very, very young - showing tart, unripened cherry, pomegranate, cola, licorice, tobacco, leather, and mineral earthy notes. Finishes long with a eucalyptus minty, herbaceously tart feel that’s brought by its tannic backbone. Evolves in the glass, and quite frankly, undeserving of a final judgment. This longs for veal or grilled steak. Drink now with a 2-hr decant or from 2023 to 2038. 93+

Practically black in color turning violet at the rim with a reflective edge. The legs are very close together showing ripeness and higher alcohol content. The nose gives off powerful whiffs of iodine, ripe black berries, cola, hanged meat and shoe leather. The palate is full-bodied, velvety in texture, and doesn’t give up on its heritage coming from the top of the second growths, albeit this is the second wine. Flavors of dark cherry, blueberry, cassis, black peppercorns, dried parsley, hot river stone, pencil shavings and glowing embers are richly concentrated, well-integrated and elegantly balanced in this delightful package. Finishes long, heightened and mentholated with ultra-refined tannins. Drink now with a 25-minute decant until 2029.

Opaque purple color turning ruby violet at the rim with a reflective edge. The nose is deep, utterly complex and high, but not over the top on octane with notes of black currant compote, and smoke. The palate is powerful, velvety and full of fruit at this time showing figs, plum, blueberry, dark chocolate, and espresso notes. This wine has integrated excellently and seamlessly, and has room to reach perfection - making this a top contender for wine of the vintage in Napa. The Spottswoode signature comes through the long, velvety, mineral-filled, sandalwood finish. Drink in 2025 to 2040. 99+

Dark bright ruby candy color turning transparent at the rim. Effervescent nose with notes of eucalyptus, limestone, and black tea on smoked black fruit. The palate displays quintessential Spottswoode character that made this wine earn the reputation of being the Château Margaux of Napa Valley - the earthiness, bright acidity (that is reminiscent of the 2006) balanced by its fruitiness. Flavors of dark cherry, pomegranate, tobacco, dark chocolate. Finishes long on silky tannins. Par excellence. Drink from 2024 to 2039. 97+

Just tasted a 1996 Château Léoville Poyferré from Saint Julien. At 23 years of age, this has reached its peak, exhibiting a great balance between aged dark fruits with emerging notes of leather, earth, graphite, cola and espresso. So elegant and silky, this wine still shows a perfumed nose accentuated by violets and blueberry incense. Drink now until 2026.

This was stored inside a cabinet for five to six years at an average of 22 degrees Celcius - far from ideal. However, I was pleasantly surprised with its aging and quicker-than-expected maturity. This gives a firm and fruity nose of blueberries, tobacco and espresso notes come off from the swirl, leaving hints of incense and a touch of leather. This wine is powerful, full-bodied, and densely-packed with notes of roasted blackberry, blueberry compote, dark chocolate, mocha. It has a sort of modern touch due to the fruitiness, yet maintains its Old World earthiness and vibrant acidity in check - making this wine very well-balanced and moderately intriguing. Finishes long with hints of charcoal and dusty tannins. This is one of the best I’ve tasted from Potensac - fitting for a great vintage. Drink now with a 30-minute decant or from 2020 to 2030.

The palate is bold and powerful - quite unready at this point despite the experts’ predictions. Flavors of black olives, gun powder, molten tar, black tea and hoisin. This is behaving quite similar to a 2007 Clos des Papes from Cháteaneuf-du-Pape at five years of age. Finishes long and intense with hints of menthol on silky tannins. Drink from 2023 to 2038.

Originating from a single vineyard surrounded by a mountain range that has a small vent from the coastline, this single vineyard production is very peculiar and quite distinct compared to the flagships Evenstad Reserve. Whilst the New World touch is apparent, this aptly balances off with a Burgundian character with saline, spicy, mineral notes. Amazing wine! Drink from 2019 to 2034.
