Deep dark ruby color turning violet at the rim with a reflective edge. The nose gives off powerful whiffs of blue and black fruits with toasty notes of candied licorice and dried herbs. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied with gripping, fleshy tannins, and enough acidity that leads to a powerful structure that should dictate a later drinking window. Flavors of blueberry and blackberry fruit dominate the primary flavors, but there are hints of ripe raspberry as well. Secondary flavors of tobacco, pencil shavings, dark chocolate complete the core. I would say this isn’t as enjoyable to drink now as it is more of an intellectual exercise. It’s too young and needs time to fully integrate and put on weight. Finishes off with gripping tannins that lend to a long, subtle graphite tail. Drink now with a 2-hr decant or from 2022 to 2037. 93-95

Deep ruby color turning violet at the rim with a reflective edge. The legs indicate medium alcohol, and verified by the label at 13.5%, which is consistent with the vintage. Aromas of red berries, cola, dried herbs, vanilla, and smoke. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied with a fleshy texture and savory acidity that balances the ripe flavors of dark cherry and raspberry. Secondary flavors of seared meat, vanilla bean, dark chocolate and toffee round up this delightful, easy-to-drink Super Tuscan. Finishes long and with dusty tannins and hints of pencil shavings. Drink now until 2034.

Deep ruby color turning crimson orange rust at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose gives off smoky, ripe red and dark fruits with some vanilla on toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied with a fleshy texture with flavors of dark cherry, raspberry compote, seared meat and paine grille. There’s enough acidity to balance the ripeness of the fruit, which makes this very attractive and savory. Finishes long with hints of smoky vanilla. Yummy! Drink now until 2030.

Opaque ruby color turning violet at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose gives off red and dark berries with toasted oak, vanilla and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, with heightened acidity that carries the ripe, raspberry, dark cherry, cola, and spice flavors through the long, mineral-filled finish. This is super modern for a Rioja, but is characteristic of the vintage. Superb, powerful, but fun. Drink now with a 30-minute decant or in 2021 to 2040.

Opaque ruby purple color turning violet at the rim with a transparent edge. The legs indicate high viscosity and confirmed by the label at 14.9%. The nose is very ripe and on high octane with notes of blueberry, vanilla, and blue flowers. The palate is full-bodied, creamy with a velvety texture. There’s medium minus acidity that isn’t able to carry the ripeness of the fruits through. Flavors of dark cherry, blueberry compote, dark chocolate form the core. Finishes long and smooth. Light garnet turning tawny orange rust at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose gives off high-pitched smoky red berries, and new leather. Very light-bodied and silky in texture with flavors of medium-ripe strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry. The medium plus acidity could trick you into thinking it’s from the New World, but the ripeness prevails and is reflective of the vintage. Finishes long and smoky with hints of dried herbs. Drink now until 2030.

The palate is full-bodied, unmistakably new world, with a velvety texture on high octane. Ripe blueberry, dark cherry, dark chocolate, rose petals, and espresso form the core. Deep garnet color turning tawny brown at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose gives off old leather, dried herbs, cola, and toasted oak on dark berries. The palate is old, matured, and has reached its peak, but will hold for at least five more years. Flavors of ripe blackberry, blueberry, raspberry compote are still very evident. However, the medium level acidity may not be able to keep it going as long as I’ve hoped. Secondary flavors of dark chocolate, coffee and cowhide. Finishes with hints of dried oregano, smoke, and dusty tannins. Drink now, but decant for sediments, until 2031.

Deep garnet color turning amber crimson at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose is really perfumed with smoky orange peel and wet carton highlights on black fruits. The palate is full-bodied, ripe, but vibrant in acidity that is able to balance the elevated alcohol levels. Flavors of blueberry, blackberry, plum, dark chocolate, scorched meat and saddle leather. This is perhaps the best I’ve tasted from this producer. It’s modern in style, but the earth and acidity keep it in check. Finishes long on hints of dried herbs and white pepper. Drink now until 2040.

Medium garnet hues turning orange rust at the rim with a reflective edge. The legs indicate medium alcohol levels in the style of the producer. The nose has plenty of oak, which for some is a turn off, but is redeemed by perfumed aromas of cola, roses, old leather and black currants. The palate is medium-bodied, silky in texture, and fresh in acidity which carries the blackberry, seared meat, tobacco and sage flavors all throughout the mentholated finish. Overall, this is still a classic. If you prefer a fresher style with less oak, try the Gran Reserva 904. Drink now until 2036 (Revised from 2026).

Dark garnet color turning orange rust at the rim with a transparent edge. Legs indicate viscosity that’s apt for the vintage. High octane notes of black fruits, cola and smoke. The palate is ultra ripe with a velvety texture, but enough acidity to carry the blueberry, plum, kirsch, flavors with a bit of underbrush and lavender tones. The alcohol is a bit overwhelming which coats the palate all throughout, but aides in the otherwise medium finish with hints of herbs de Provence. Drink now until 2032.

I discovered this chateau rather late (around 2018) in my search for the top chateaux in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. I’m very glad that our tour guide introduced us to one of the oldest establishments in the appellation. Ordinarily, they’d make their wine quite traditional in the old school manner. But this rendition is remarkably different. Dark garnet hues turning brilliant ruby violet at the rim with a transparent edge. The legs show an unusually high viscosity, and confirmed by the label which indicates 15% of alcohol. The nose gives off ripe blackberry, candied raspberry and smoked baking spices. The palate is plush, seamlessly integrated with just enough acidity to carry the ripe fruit notes all the way to the long, dusty finish with hints of toasted oak vanilla. This is a delight. Very elegant and a crowd pleaser. Drink now until 2030.

The palate is very fresh , sumptuous, and lively - quite food friendly with citrus flavors and very little oak if any. At higher temperatures , theres a bit of pineapple and vanilla. At lower temperatures, it’s quite hard to tell if this is even from the New World so drinkers actually have that flexibility by adjusting the temperature. Pale yellow gold color with a reflective edge. The nose gives off young pineapple, peach and apricots with a hint of citrus. The palate is medium-to-full bodied for a Chardonnay that should give it away to have come from the New World. However, the crisp acidity with green stemmed notes associated with cooler climates puts you off in a clever way. Flavors of green apples, pears, form the luscious core, capped by salty minerals on the long finish puts this wine on a more interesting level than most. Dark purple color turning violet at the rim with a reflective edge. The legs indicate a high level of alcohol for Rioja standards. The nose is quite dense, ripe and on high octane showing aromas of black fruits, cola, black tea, and smoke. On the palate, it’s full-bodied with a velvety texture. Acidity is medium, and the presence of oak helps balance the juicy ripe fruit flavors. The mid palate has a solid core that gives off blueberry jam, meat, vanilla, and cedar notes. The finish is long and heightened that reaches the back of the throat. What a treat from Bodegas Roda! It’s a modern take on Rioja but has enough structure to age in the long term.
