2007 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste Nebbiolo

Clear red. Heady aromas with deep black cherry and a whiff of surmaturite and liqueur. Ripe, sappy, round, and powerful. The acidity is sound, and the minerality shows up at the end, along with broad tannins. Not much in the way of complexity at this point. This is freakishly ripe and large scaled for Nebbiolo, and it is clear that these are early days for this wine. Will it ever pare down, lose its baby fat, and gain more structure and finesse? It reminds me of some 2007 southern Rhône reds where I had similar reservations about the balance. More Amarone than Barolo. Quite a mouthful that my dining companions enjoyed more than I did, but maybe I'm being too harsh regarding this hedonistic wine.

11/6/18, 2:08 PM - I know what you mean by 2007 rhone - `I have some Beaucastle CNP and not really enjoying it. You know this is 400 quid a bottle now right? (god knows why..)

Just opened my first bottle (375) ever in any vintage and realized two things: 1. this is a fine wine; 2. this will a fine wine multiplied several times over when given (much) more time. Right now it's meaty and heady(14.5%) and awaits a resolution that time will bring. It's not identifiably Tuscan (75% Sangiovese; 20% Cabernet; 5% Syrah), which is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm happy to own this but will have trouble sharing it down the road since I have it only in half bottles, which I tend to open for myself when there is no one around with whom to share (like now, at a cabin, post-kayaking).

11/29/15, 1:01 PM - Nice story - I have a few 2009s and a case of 2010 in bond. It's a super wine and a crowd pleaser if can bare to share... ;)
I plan to keep the 09s and some of the 10s if I can as I'm sure will develop into something special.

Dazzling. Pure and clean in the glass with minimal sediment. Strawberry, cherry, and a hint of spice. Despite an extraordinary nose it was a tad two dimensional however.

If a date, this was a 25 year old 34-24-34 lovely who spends the evening licking her lips before heading back to your place for some circa 1973 porno pleasure. Cue the slap bass guitar

quality issues with these BPW '07 CDPs continue. is this heat damage? i'd venture that the vintage was just impossibly ripe and the wines have turned into oxidized mess, but that's not evident from the notes of others. this was pretty much undrinkable.

4/19/15, 12:09 PM - I agree, my whole case of the same yard CDR was not great so I got though it as quickly as possible and cooked with some of it too! The 2012 is excellent!

One of my favourites and opened a mag for the long bank holiday weekend. Hopefully will develop over a couple of days as clearly more "pink" than out of bottle and too young from mags. If you have mags keep them - bottles drink at will and can only improve. I'd be happy to buy up as a lifer! Day 2 - what a difference, good lively nose of fruit and a little acetone. Put on weight and we'll rounded v smooth and balanced, some heat on the end. Clean finish, easy to drink and great with lamb moussaka - seems to like the fresh mint!

5/3/14, 12:21 AM - Agreed, was naughty to open a mag but all the bottles in bond storage and currently nothing else in the cellar under $60! I found the 750 and an hour of air works well and easy to drink. Round and full and clearly will improve with age. Lifting a magnum and PNP does not work so as a penance I will buy another case of bargain price mags for the future! Also to note a heavy head in the morning - young 2009 not kind on the head whatever it is! Let's see what it has done overnight with dinner this evening.

Some different wines with friends (Sharon and Sashi's): One of my favorite names for an Italian winery. Sounds like it should be in Iowa. Great wine though still quite young. A bit drunk at the end of the evening was far more complex. Purple in color. This is a Cab/Sangiovese blend. The nose has dark cherries, leather, cassis, cedar and some forest floor. Full bodied. On the palate, great acidity. dark cherries at first with the cassis coming out with air. Complex. Full bodied. Lovely wine that needs time.

2/23/14, 1:53 AM - Thanks, nice review, I've got a few left and will hold for a while longer. Have just sourced some 2010. A fave of ours. I did smile, I thought you wrote that "you" were a bit drunk at the end of the evening bud now realise you mean the "bit that was drunk last". Anyway a nice review, thanks for sharing.

This blew me away but promised more if given some time in the cellar.
Color: Almost black with a touch of blue on the rim. It threw some sediment.
Smell: Cardamom and the honey or caramel you find in some Cali Zinfandels.
Taste: Hits with a massive attack of black fruit in the modern style. The midpalate is a slow crescendo of blackcurrant and raspberry, cherry pie, black pepper-- growing, growing, coating the palate. The tannins are "there" but soft enough to steal one of these from the cellar now. Fairly high amount of oak but this beauty can handle the makeup. Long finish. Seductive, luscious but never "tarty." Only negative thing I can say is the alcoholic heat is a little much at this age.

Tannin, not much fruit, no length, not your average rioja - not even average.... Have one more from the "Buy two" deal at the merchant. Always a reason for offers!!
  • Luckyb commented:

5/6/13, 4:05 AM - Just for clarity and in response to the comment below - I like Rioja very much this just "in my personal opinion" is not an enjoyable / classic Rioja in taste or style. Sorry and not to offend - I didn't like it and score according to my personal taste and opinion.

If you don't, why to buy any? Why even to score it?

Explosive, beautiful, even luxurious nose at first, then tightening up. Give this a good ten years. Really. 93pts, all in potential.
