Solid Barolo. Nose wet earth and red florals. Palate full, textured tannins, acidity, wood, fair complexity and depth, slow to evolve during 90 minute dinner.

2017 Odoul Coquard Vosne Romanee. Dark ruby, aromas of damp flowers and herbs, moist earth, cool focused palate with rich bright fruit with a plush soft tannic complex puckering finish that feels too young now and can be aged into something later that will be soft and elegant. First of six bottles.

Opaque ruby, aromas of roses, spices, palate very full with delicious fruit, some sweet chocolate, nice balanced acidity and softened tannins that taper evenly to a broad, across-the-teeth popsicle stick finish. Would rebuy.

Translucent dark ruby, light wood aromas, palate is high bright acidity and drying tannins both, sandwiching lots of sweet ripe fruit, definitely a food wine. Pleasant, on point and generic at the same time.

Shiny deep opaque ruby, nose of leather and spicy wood, palate rich and broad with loads of red fruits and grippy roof of mouth tannins, wood on the exhale, finishing to a dry length. A burly full-bodied Riserva that has absorbed the wood aromatically and balanced with a lot of fruit and skins, this is a cold weather wine good for rich tomato sauce foods.

Meursault Les Vireuils by Isabelle et Philippe Germain: first taste of this maker. Classic Meursault nose of toasted nuts, broad palate of salted butter, lemon seeds, but somewhat lacking in fruit though, like listening to a music system with lots of treble but not enough midrange.

A beautiful showing of deep fruit and minerals, honey, mint. Not a blockbuster and not a Grand Cru performance - but for Chablis, more body and amplitude and maybe less chalk.

Aromas of Chinese five spice and autumn leaves, palate of pomegranates and plums, deep with layers of lively acidity, silky tannins, a multi faceted and balanced interesting wine from a premier cru that can sometimes be bold but boring if opened too young. Really good showing.

Full nose and palate - well within the Chassagne style, between Meursault and Puligny in breadth and precision. Dense packed fruit and some backbone with aromatic length to the finish. Comfort in a glass.

Domaine Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisiere 2015. Bought in Montreal, I’ve never had a bad Faiveley Burgundy. This one is generous nose of iron and strawberries and the palate is both bright and savoury with a velvet tannin that makes you keep pouring glasses.

Amazing nose of ripe fruit and tobacco and palate of dense berry and minerals and acid finishing long and lush. A beautiful Bordeaux Margaux third growth, my favourite, and I remember the times when this was $85 at LCBO a decade ago

Opened at dinner with the GrapeNuts. Cork was broken and crumbling due to amateur server who bent the cork, but I managed to recover it all.

Garnet hue, nose was cool dark fruit and palate was a mix of ripe black fruits and low notes of iron tapering to a length of 10+ seconds. Solid masculine Gevrey style.

Showed really well at dinner with the GrapeNuts. Light gold, nose at first muted sulfur, then toasted nuts, solid on the palate with white stone fruit and yellow tropical fruit, broad oily and generous with a firm acid long finish. Great all the way down the bottle.

First time with this. Opened with muted nose but palate was full of tropical fruit first and supportive acidity second. Then within minutes the nose offered lees and toast and a generous plush long finish.

My first Montrachet. Nose started shy then the citrus peel and white flowers and vanilla and honey, the aromas grew intense over the hour. Palate was so deep and complex with nerve, mineral, subdued fruit making way for a long and layered finish. So full of substance and yet so light it is quite different than Premier Cru Puligny or Chassagne, very impressive but not super showy either. Class and refinement.

24 hours after opening

Deep nose of florals like violets and baking spices, cloves, cinnamon, cassis, cigar box. Palate is dense, lush, abundant dark fruits, solid core of integrated fruit and tannin and earth, peppercorns, tapering to a luxurious velvety thick and balanced twenty second finish.

Opened with the Grape Nuts and was immediately enjoying the bouquet but regretting the monotone palate. Glad half was saved overnight to produce this note!

Opened at Jacob’s & Co. Steakhouse in Toronto for my 50th birthday.

Nose opened quietly but every minute the magnitude grew. Graphite. Cassis. Blueberry. BlackBerry. Clove. Balsamic. Palate presses softly then solidly but no heaviness.
Tannin like finest tea, runs so long like 40 seconds. This is so vibrant so balanced so exciting not tired it’s like Bruce Lee. Bad analogy. It’s SO good that you could impress a newbie and a veteran with Chateau Latour and they would both say WOW. Then when you have the steak the black pepper of the wine comes out. The wine aromas change as you swirl. Next it’s a Barolo! Next it’s a Pomerol! Next it’s that Lafite we had a few months ago! The class is off the charts.I actually opened the same vintage 1999 Ch. Latour almost ten years ago. Then, it was too young. I think I hit the window!!

Cork had some white dust on top. Pulled with some effort with a two-pronged ah-so opener. Dark garnet with some clear edges. First nose revealed Bordeaux nobility right away - dense with slowly unfurling complex closed blue flowers, with time the aromas opened to anise, fine herbs, spices, then with more time the oak discovery was the finest I ever smelled, bringing round all the aromatics of a perfectly balanced wine. First sips the palate had higher volume than the nose, and the flavor transitions from initial attack to mid palate were rich with fascinating contours and elegantly complex flavours of age-appropriate cool dark fruit, supported by depth and structure that grew as the finish lingered for twenty seconds or more. With time the aromatics gained width and the palate was plush and luxurious enjoyment. The balance and movement of flavours and smells were amazing to me - all that I love in Pauillac, in Bordeaux, in wine. Flawless.

Shared at home with friends over roast lamb.

Opened too young, but I wanted to try this out at Charley's steak house in Orlando with their bone-in rib steak. Dark ruby. Aromatically dense with earth and the fruit implied this can be a floral and complex sniff with the right time in cellar and glass. Palate had that sought-after mineral notes and again the fruit suggested a long sleep would reward richly. Saved some the next day out of a paper cup paired with some Chipotle's Mexican grill on the down-low and it was much more open, complex, deep.
