2019 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Mosel Saar Ruwer

Shockingly explosive on the palate, this has Spätlese intensity, even if contained in a Kabinett frame. The bones of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr are apparent in the wine, supplemented with a fresh, zesty top note of a juicy clementine orange. The intensity of flavor reverberates through the mid-palate and finish, making it a rave experience in a green Mosel flute. Ian Anderson as Riesling, madly jumping around the stage, eyes bulging and flaring, hair flying as he alternates between impossible rhymes and staccato instrumental runs. Skating away on the thin ice of a new daaaaaaayyyy.

Nobody’s going to believe it, but 2008 in Bordeaux was rather good. This wine comes from a small, seven-acre property. This 2008 is structured with a mineral character and chewy tannins. It is well balanced; the blackberry fruit synchronizes well with the dry texture and fresh acidity. Compact, concentrated blackcurrants, smoky with elegance, lift, structure and length. Classy. Age for 4–5 years.

Smoke, apple/pear, herbaceous, box bush, flinty and mineraly notes on the nose. On the palate very concentrated - apple and elderflower, a bit of pith, more smoke. Med + acid, juicy long finish, saline at the end. Unique and rare!

Ripe strawberries and tobacco on a generous nose, after a half-hour decant. A medium weight fruit forward body, the body notable for a strong structure, the tannins carrying through to a long, slightly peppery finish. Enjoyable now, but I wouldn’t rush to finish off this vintage yet.

Cigar box and black cherries on a slightly reserved nose. Silky fruits and tannins in a medium weight body. The really long finish comes out of nowhere, like stealth bomber - minerality and a slightly higher than expected level of alcohol Just carries it on and on...

Not bad. Truly not bad.
  • Zoomin Z commented:

7/6/20, 4:50 PM - But not that good, either. Sort of a thin experience, although true to a Bordeaux terroir...

Impressive bottle, the wine...not so much...

4/24/19, 6:50 PM - Restrained nose of cassis. Medium weight, round and new-world fruity. Tannins completely integrated, disappeared and disappointing, on a lighter finish. A fair amount of simple, alcoholic heat echoes back at you - not adding much to the experience. Lacks typicicity - neither in the Malbec, neither in the terroir. Absolutely no sediment after 8 years - overfined? Definitely not a "find." An OK new-world experience, won't ruin your dinner, but absolutely characterless.

Had to choose among young wines at a fundraiser - was fortunate to enjoy this quite approachable bottle over several leisurely hours. As expected, the tannins were strong but not overpowering on the nose and were balanced well with sweet red (notably strawberry) and black fruits. The body was medium weight, with structured, fine tannins that softened up rather quickly (an hour), and helped along nicely with a steak dinner. The fruits were on the sweeter side, typical for a Neipperg family product; and the finish was pleasant and moderately dry.

This was a deftly made Merlot blend. I'd expect it to start peaking at 6-7 years of age.

Sweet, confected red fruits at first. Soon dominated by cigar box with a hint of vanilla. A medium weight body with good energy. A slightly dry tobacco finish. A good balance of sweet and savory. 14.5% alcohol well hidden - not at all a hot finish. A wine entering its prime.

9/7/17, 5:34 PM - Thanks! I'd like to add that tannins are still lightly present towards the finish, but this is a very food friendly wine and any protein at all would make the tannins disappear quite nicely. As for the 2014 - I confess struggling to keep up with my cellar/purchases - and will only be opening the 2008 full bottles soon...

Fino sherry, sherry cask and orange peel on the nose. A medium weight body that is still quite tart, with a bracing finish that softens as the wine warms up. There are hazelnut notes and a botrytis dryness to the racy, lasting finish, as well. Intellectually interesting to see how this all holds in balance together, and admittedly unique, but not pleasing in a hedonistic sense.

Day 2: (room temperature) warmer and richer today. The nose has lemon and cognac notes, and for the first time, I get chenin blanc notes as well. Still medium bodied, the mouthfeel that I can only descibe as halfway between a sherry and a california chardonnay! Very smooth, still very fresh, and still mildly tart on the finish. More enjoyable but less personality.

So, I would decant 6-12 hours (rather than 2) before serving, or wait another 6-12 years before opening another of this vintage. Best guess - if I had another.

2/3/16, 10:50 AM - Thanks, Stefanos for your comment! Another very interesting biodynamic wine ("sauvage" comes to mind) was Sebastien Riffault's Sancerre "Akmenine" from my July-11-2014 post.

Peach n petrol, more sweet than off dry, some watermelon on the palate, minimal if any acidity, slight carbonation. went well with gingered pork tenderloin. Not a great QPR from not a great vintage in Alsace.
  • Zoomin Z commented:

6/24/15, 9:38 PM - This was a classic mistake in trying to fit the data to match the results - At least one website (eRobertParker) rates the Mosel 2009 vintage as an amazing 95I(Irregular), whereas Alsace was not good at all (79I). I just looked at Alsace...

Or, my mistake in reviewing right after drinking - geographically I really should have known better!
