2/25/19, 12:09 PM - sadly I treated both of bottles as a pop and pour. Could easily benefit from a decant of 1-2 hours, but also felt it was pretty approachable out of the gate. Paired with grilled flank steak on the most recent bottle and worked quite well.

I got these at a special 5 case price of $30 by going in with others. The regular $50 price would be pretty disappointing to me, and the $30 one is fine I guess, but if you were to have me taste this and ask how many I'd take at $30, I'd likely pass. It's a fine enough wine and well made and all that, just not that complex or exciting.

Dense coloring with purplish ruby edges. Aromas of dark fruits, clove, anise, dried spices, and graphite. Medium body and acid, medium (+) finish, and lush and round on the palate, with flavors of dark and dark red fruits, chocolate, and a bit of mineral and spice. Fine with a steak, but a little uninspiring. I used to not be that into Napa cabs, and this is the style that comes to mind as the reason for that.

The claims of secondary fermentation / effervescence are correct. Popped my 1st 2013 last night and had the issue. Flavors seem ok, but the fizz definitely detracts. Saved part of the bottle and will see how it tastes tonight. Disappointing though.

11/28/18, 6:50 AM - Disappointing to hear... at least on the 2nd night the bottle was much better, and still quite youthful - but per your experience sounds like there is varying degrees of this issue. Hopefully more age and a vigorous decant resolve it in the future

My first time with this particular vineyard, and it was an interesting experience. Given my lack of background with the characteristics of the site, I can't speak to any terroir influences, but Jamie's stem inclusion practices were certainly clear. There was a distinct floral note to the wine, as well as a fresh herbal tone supporting the cherry/strawberry fruit. One thing that did concern me was a bit of an acidic tingle (not CO2) on the finish of the wine. I have run into this once before, in Jamie's 2013 Sonoma Coast blend, and it eventually came to dominate the wine. I did not care for that effect at all (and now have half a dozen bottles of a wine I don't want to drink), and I hope it's not going to become a dominant feature of this wine, because I otherwise really like this cuvée.
  • Grape_ape commented:

10/9/18, 6:38 AM - interesting - I have noted the same thing on the 2013 Sonoma Coast... initial bottle that I had early did not have it, but subsequent ones did (can't recall if all did), but it was unmistakable. Only grabbed one of the Signal Ridge, so am going to wait on it a few years.

Popped and poured. Light to medium ruby color, slightly cloudy. Super aromatic on the nose with a mix of tart red fruits, cranberry, cherry, pomegranate and more with a wild cherry, spicy herbal cough drop aroma and maybe a touch of orange peel. This carries through to the palate where it is all spicy and tart red fruit for days. Lots of acidity here and still very primary. Smooth mouthfeel and finish. Really enjoyable with room to grow.

first off - this bottle had the weirdest sediment I have ever seen.. there was particulate matter suspended in the wine that didn't settle to the bottom. Had my other unopened bottle not also had it, I wouldn't have consumed it, it was so off-putting visually. I screened it out, which caught the larger bits, then consumed. Curious if anyone else experienced this.

high toned red fruit, some earth and little tobacco. Somewhat simple, but light, quaffable and very food friendly.

Unfortunately my bottle was flawed. I can enjoy wines with mild brett notes in a rustic style red wine, but it is not something I expect/enjoy in CA pinot noir. In this case, it was a moderate amount of brett which was apparent upon opening the cork. It ruined the good fruit and depth that was underneath and was discarded.
  • Grape_ape commented:

2/14/18, 8:39 PM - just had this tonight, and while it started out a bit bretty with barnyard, it blew off over time. I thought it was really good.

Something is off with my Pian del Ciampolo. Aromas, flavors, and depth are muted. I drank over three nights to see if it would open up and develop a little. No obvious signs of corkage, though strange white pulpy sediment showed up in my last two glasses (like the kind you find in kombucha). Best conclusion I can make is there is some new flaw to me or this wine has seen its best days. I can see how this could have been really good - elegant, light and fruity and more Burgundian than Tuscan. I don't know what to make of the pulp. A rare big miss in the Mad Rose portfolio for me.
  • Grape_ape commented:

12/18/17, 12:40 PM - I had the same experience with the odd floating sediment, and my second bottle that hasn't been opened also has it, very visible... kinda gross looking. also thought it pretty austere and light

I'll be honest, I didn't have particularly high hopes on this one, but it's actually pretty solid for a standalone sipper right now, and I'd say it lives up to its "daily cab" promise. I probably wouldn't have bought this (hadn't so far in spite of seeing it on offer a few times), but I'm not mad at it being included in the first installment of the @garyvee wine club either.

Transparent ruby color. Aromas of black and red fruits, earthy funk, graphite, rose, smoke, cola, and tangerine. I like smelling this. Medium body, acid, and finish, with flavors of red currant, black cherry, plum, orange peel, cola, red hot candy, and spice. I'd pair this with BBQ or maybe pork carnitas instead of "slab and a cab," but standalone sipping works too. Drink now.
  • Grape_ape commented:

10/16/17, 8:27 AM - while it's certainly fine and inoffensive, the nose just seemed a bit odd on this, and not very cab like... maybe it is the region, but while I agree it's an ok everyday sipper for grocery store level cabs, I think there are better options at the same or lower price to scratch that itch (eg Louis Martini, Sean Minor, Oberon, Franciscan etc.)

UNP. Cap gave a little pop when unscrewed. Color light straw. c/w the pop this had a hint of spritz that dissipated with decanting. Just enough RS to offset the acid structure which is substantial. Great stuff.

This is high end RRV pinot - I understand that these folks came from the Williams-Selyem crew at one point and was curious to learn if they would go more to cherry cola or strive more for elegance and restraint than what I feel is currently being produced by the mothership on west side road.

Lots of pinosity on the nose (chill the wine! otherwise the seams come undone and the warm fruit takes over...), soft, sweet fruit with a lot of new oak. Very good freshness, but if you think in terms of the two worlds of pinot noir - on the one hand more elegant, pure pinot noir, and on the other hand, the sweet blackberry, cinnamon/vanilla/nutmeg/cola deeply expressive modern/new world pinot - this is unmistakably warm weather Cali pinot.

Now, I have no stylistical loyalties. I learnt to drink pinot noir in the US, and I think there is a place and time for austere Lafarge Volnay and for this type of pinot. The Anthill farm 2012 RRV Tina Marie PN goes down very easily and you can not go wrong with this pleasurable wine.

However, this is far from the stratospheric levels reached by the likes of Littorai, Hirsch, Ceritas these days.

So, on the whole, this being my first Anthill Farm PN, I must say I am slightly dissappointed.

And I wish very much that I had picked - for the last US pinot noir on this trip, and at the same price as the Tina Marie - the Cameron Abbey Ridge 2011 Dundee Hills, OR, PN sitting next to this bottle at Vinyl Wine (on Lex just above 96th street).
  • Grape_ape commented:

8/11/14, 9:05 AM - while I have yet to try a Tina Marie, FWIW, I've always heard that the RRV wines from AHF, and the Tina Marie in particular, are the "biggest" wines AHF produces, and are more atypical of the rest of their line up. While the other bottlings may still not live up you your preferences, this was probably not the one upon which to judge their overall lineup...

Semi-dry white white. Pale to clear hue. Nose is fruity acidic with hints of pineapple laced citrus. No food necessary-- great wine to start any occasion. Slightly fruit forward, honey dew, tart…terrific! Love this wine.

From 75cl screwcap. A bit closed aromatically, but there's no mistaking this as a NZ PN; very sweet, almost sugary in-your-face red fruit entry and a monolithic, squeaky (i.e. not mineral, not layered, not structured, not tannic, not glycerine-like) mid-palate texture. 14,5% alc quite well integrated (glug, glug...); lacks acid balance for my taste. Sweet confectionery-like finish. Perhaps this will improve with 2-3 years in the cellar - if the sweetness recedes and the texture becomes more appealing, this might warrant 87-88P
  • Grape_ape commented:

3/17/14, 7:05 AM - 13.5% alc on my bottle, and also found it much more earthy/mineral driven than fruity, but not lacking in fruit either... tons of acid, lots of grapefruit/citrus character...

  • Grape_ape commented:

3/17/14, 1:44 PM - Hi Honest Bob, no problem. Good discussion. Positive this is a red wine, pinot noir, the Waipara bottling. Maybe just my perception, but I often get that grapefruit note on NZ pinot... but others that were sharing this particular bottle called it out even before me... are you in the US? Curious if this is in a different market? Interesting, was definitely 13.5% for mine...

  • Grape_ape commented:

3/18/14, 6:34 AM - odd indeed... mine wasn't the prima donna, just the basic Waipara... However, I'm wondering if the importer/distributor puts a different back label on for different markets, and the ABV # was different on them... one possible explanation.

A big thick viscous wine. Dark color with a nose of oak, raisins and bramble fruit. The taste was very interesting with big notes of prune juice, raisins, vanilla and big oak! A great cherry mid-palate with an almost savory goat cheese finish. I know that sounds crazy but the cheese aspect was always there. This is a kind of a nerd wine. Excited about it's evolution over the next years.

Decanted for 2 hours
  • Grape_ape commented:

6/15/12, 7:25 AM - interesting... big thick and viscous are not descriptors I would think of for this wine, quite the oppoosite, at least compared to more typical 14.5% and up cali-cabs.... I found this more elegant and feminine relative to many other typical Cali Cabs. Wondering if there is bottle variation, will have to see how my next bottle performs..
